In the census of 2 April 1871 in Brunswick Place, Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, he was listed as the son of James Charles Greathead James was a scholar.6 James attended in April 1878 St Peter's Collegiate School for boys in Wolverhampton, he was 10 years five months old. He previously attended St Marys. The family lived in Elm Street and his father was a brass finisher.7 In the census of 3 April 1881 in 19 Allcock St, Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, he was listed as the son of James Charles Greathead.8 In the census of 5 April 1891 in Princess Alexandra Inn, 27 Kent Street North, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, he was listed as the son of Hannah Sivil.9 He married Leah Gertrude Cantrill on 26 May 1892 in St Martin, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, after the banns had been read. The family lived in Moor their father was a dairyman.4 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 32 Bridge St West, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, he was listed as the grandson of Hannah Greathead.5 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 70 Murdock Road, Handsworth, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England, he was listed as the son of James William Greathead Fred was a book binder.6 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 202 Solihull Road, Smethwick, Worcestershire, England, he was listed as the son of James William Greathead Frederick was a bookbinder working for Hawkins & Sons who were bookbinders in John Bright Street in Birmingham.7 He married Marion Maud Wingate in 1930 in St Marks, St Marks Road, Lyncombe, Bath, Somerset, England.8,9 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Frederick was listed as living at 29 Bishops Way, Andover, Hampshire, England, with his wife Marion. He was baptised on 27 April 1898 in St Matthias, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, his family lived in 40 Bridge Street West and his father was a publican.6 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 32 Bridge St West, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, he was listed as the grandson of Hannah Greathead.7 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 70 Murdock Road, Handsworth, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England, he was listed as the son of James William Greathead Charles was at school.8 Charles signed up for short service on 7 June 1915 giving his address as 10 York Road, Birmingham and his age was 19 years, two months and six days. His occupation was a tool maker. He gave his mother Leah of the same address as his next of kin. Charles was five feet 3 inches tall and had a scar on his nose and left cheek, with a mole on his back. He weighed 114 lbs and had a chest measurment of 34 inches and was of good physical development. He travelled from Southampton to Le Havre on 16 May 1916.9 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 202 Solihull Road, Smethwick, Worcestershire, England, he was listed as the son of James William Greathead Charles was a toolmaker working for Whatson Griffith & Co who were jewllers and toolmakers in Hockley Hill in Birmingham.10 He married Gertrude Bertha Taylor on 11 September 1926 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.11 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Charles was listed as living at 204 Solihull Road, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, with his wife Gertrude. They were next door to his parents who lived at number 202. Charles was a bricklayers labourer.5 Charles died on 28 December 1969 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, aged 71.12,4

Chart 3 - George Greathead
     Anne O'Hagan was born about 1847 in Dunmore, Fermanagh, County Fermanagh, Ireland.1,2 She was the daughter of John O'Hagan and Mary Ann Gallagher.3 John and Mary and their two children Anne and John arrived in Australia in July 1863 on board the ship the Young Australia. They settled in Maryborough in 1865 staying there for 3 years.2 She married George Greathead, son of George Greathead and Ann Stott, on 6 April 1869 in Maryborough Catholic Church, Maryborough, Queensland, Australia, by Father Paul Tissot a Frenchman. The ceremony was witnessed by George Ward and Mary Ann O'Hagan. Mary left her mark.

The family became pioneers of the sugar cane industry in the Woongarra district. George was one of the members of the first Barolin Divisional Board and was their chairman between 1883 - 1885. Through his interest in education he donated the land on which the original Woongarra State School was built.1,4,5,6,7 Her husband George died on 9 September 1887 in Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia, Sadly he commited suicide shooting himself in the banana fields, over worry about the mill he had bought.4,8,9,10 Anne appeared on the 1913 Australian electoral rolls as living with her children Alice, Catherine, John and William. she was a sugar grower. They were living in Barolin Road, Musgrave, Wide Bay, Queensland.11 Anne died on 3 January 1918 in Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia, She died following a fall from her sulky when the horse was spooked and she was thrown from the carriage and directly into a tree. She died some time later from her injuries.4,12,13,10 Anne was buried in Bundaberg Cemetery, Fitzgerald Street, Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia, in a private grave number P89 location C4. She is buried in the same grave as her husband George. The service was taken in a Catholic Church by Father Kelly and the funeral director was J Novakoski. Her address was given as Barolin Road, Bundaberg.14,12

He was baptised on 26 October 1873 in St Paulinus, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, England, he was baptised as Georgius Gulielmus Greathead and his parents were listed as Joannes and Ann Greathead née Smith.4 In the census of 3 April 1881 in Catterick, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Ann Greathead George was a scholar.5 In the census of 5 April 1891 in Carrylborr Farm, Hornby, Northallerton, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as a boarder of John Wilson. George was an agricultural labourer.6 He married Thirza Maria Littley, daughter of Thomas Littley and Sarah Edwards, on 24 December 1900 in St Andrews, Tudhoe Grange, Durham, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Robert Dowson and Mary Bell. George was a chargeman and his father was recorded as William Greathead deceased. I am concerned as I thought it was John. Thirza 's father Thomas Littley was a labourer. Both gave their address as Marmaduke Street. Mary Bell was on 1901 living at 10 Marmadule Street with her widowed father John. Robert Dowson was boarding with Thirza's parents in 1901 at 14 Marmaduke Street.7 George was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in South Terrace, Tudhoe, Durham, England, George was a steel works labourer living with his wife.8 George was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 125 Craddock Street, Spennymoor, Durham, England, George was a coke filler above ground living with his wife and children in their four roomed home.9 He was a worker at Bye Product Coke Ovens on 8 December 1919. George was listed as head of household in the census of 19 June 1921 in 125 Craddock Street, Spennymoor, Durham, England, George was a bye product coke oven labourer working for Bolchow and Vaughan & Co. at Leasingthorne Colliery. He was living with his wife and eight of his children.10 In 1927 when George's son Arthur signed up into the RAF he was described as his next of kin and lived in Stone Cottage, Spennymoor, Durham, England.11 His wife Thirza died on 1936 in Auckland, Durham, England.12 George died in 1951 in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England.13

     Eliza Appleyard was born about 1875 in Kippax, Yorkshire, England.2,3 She was the daughter of Thomas Appleyard.3 She married Harry Greathead, son of Margaret Greathead, on 24 December 1895 in St Mary the Virgin, Hunslet, Leeds, Yorkshire, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Thomas Greathead, his uncle and Mary Ann Nicholson who signed with her mark. Harry was a joiiner and stated his father was John a blacksmith, this was infact his grandfather. Harry and Eliza both gave their address as Sturdy Street.4,5,3,6 In the census of 31 March 1901 she was listed as the wife of Harry Greathead.7 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 28 Darfield Crescent, Leeds, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Harry Greathead.8 Eliza sailed from Liverpool on 10 October 1912 with Louise who was listed as a domestic and little Irene aged 10 months. They sailed to Melbourne Australia aboard SS Belgic. Eliza's husband had gone out early that year in February.9 Her husband Harry died on 22 December 1940 in Undercliffe, New South Wales, Australia, the anniversary of his death appeared in the The Sydney Morning Herald of 22 December 1941.10,11 Eliza died on 13 July 1975 in Canberra, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, Eliza is described as late of Red Hill, A.C.T., formery Earlwood.12 Eliza was buried in Woronora Cemetery, Woronora, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.11

Robert Greathead
     Robert Greathead was born on 26 August 1884 in Byers Green, Auckland, Durham, England.3,2,4 He was the son of John George Greathead and Margaret Anne Moore. In the census of 5 April 1891 in Lodges Terrace, Byers Green, Auckland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of John George Greathead Robert was a scholar.5 In the census of 31 March 1901 in North Street, Byers Green, Auckland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of John George Greathead Robert was an apprentice cabinet maker.6 John, his wife Margaret and their two children Hannah and Robert sailed from Liverpool on 27 July 1904 aboard the ship Republic for Boston, Massachusetts arriving on 5 August 1904. They returned home from New York arriving at Liverpool on 21 December 1905.7,8 He married ... Maine.9 He was found on a passenger list with John George Greathead and Margaret Anne Greathead on 17 June 1906 as arriving in Ellis Island on 17 June 1906 on ship "Baltic". John was aged 66, Margaret aged 60, John aged 26 and Robert age 21 on a passage paid for by themselves. The ship sailed from Liverpool on 23 May 1906. John and his father's occupation was stated as coke burners and Roberts' occupation as a cabinet maker. They lived in Byers Green and were travelling to West Virginia to visit John's brother William Henry Greathead who was declared as their next of kin.

The "Baltic" was built by Harlan & Wolff Limited, Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1904. She was 23,884 gross tons; 726 (bp) feet long; 75 feet wide. Steam quadruple expansion engines, twin screw. Service speed 16 knots. 2,875 passengers (425 first class, 450 second class, 2,000 third class). She was built for White Star and Dominion Lines, in 1904 and named Baltic. Liverpool-New York service. Largest ship afloat, 1904-05. Troopship during World War I. Scrapped in 1933.10,9

He married Sarah Moore in 1909 in Darlington, Durham, England, Robert and Sarah met on a railway station.9,11,12 Robert was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 7 Leymour Street, Bishop Auckland, Durham, England, Robert was described as a joiner cottage department in the colliery living with his wife, thier twin daughters aged 11 months and his step son and step daughter in their five roomed home.13 Robert was listed as head of household in the census of 19 June 1921 in Nags Head House, Rainton Gate, West Rainton, Durham, England, Robert was a joiner and pit tub wheel wedger working for Lambton and Hetton Coal Company in Lambton D Pit but was locked out. He was living with his wife and children and step son Maynard.14 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Robert was listed as living at 5 St Andrews Place, Bradford, Yorkshire, England, with his wife Sarah. And their children Leonard and Ruby. Robert was and cart and wheel wright.15 His wife Sarah died on 1952 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England.16 Robert died in 1961 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England.1,17

In the census of 5 April 1891 in 63 Alfred Street, Westoe, South Shields, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Edward Greathead.4 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 96 Elizabeth Street, South Shields, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Edward Greathead.5 He married Lily Harding, daughter of Frederick J Harding and Annie Ovenden, on 19 August 1903 in St Michael and All Angels, South Westoe, Durham, England, Lily and George's families lived next door to each other in 1901.6,2,7,8 George was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 51 Waynam Street, Sunderland, Durham, England, George was a coal miner living with his family in a two roomed home.9 George was listed as head of household in the census of 19 June 1921 in 7 Rothsay Street, Sunderland, Durham, England, George was a stone work miner at Monkswearmouth Coal Company but was out of work. He was living with his wife and even children.10 George died in 1935 in Thorne, Doncaster, Yorkshire, England.11
