     Richard Greathead was born about 1812 in Hulme, Lancashire, England.2 He was the son of Robert Greathead and Ann Haslam.1 He married Sarah Whitworth in 1837.1 His wife Sarah died on 1 September 1838 in Trumpet Street, Deansgate, Manchester, Lancashire, England.1,3 Richard was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 7 June 1841 in 7 Evans Street, Manchester, Lancashire, England, Richard was a cotton spinner and had his mother and step sisters living with him.4 He married Elizabeth Barlow on 25 December 1841 in St Mary, Parish Church, Prestwich, Manchester, Lancashire, England, Richard was a widower when he married his second wife Elizabeth. The marriage was performed after banns were read and witnessed by John Hunt who left his mark of X, and James Sheldrick. Both Richard and Elizabeth also left their mark as X and their address as Oldham. No father was listed on the marriage certificate for Elizabeth.5,6 Richard was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 7 April 1861 in 32 Hibbert Street, Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, England, Richard was a spinner, bit of a mystery as with the many children is listed a Richard aged one month but the only Richard that seems to have been born is #1753 in 1862.7 Richard seems to have had several occupations all probably within the same industry. In 1849 he is described as a piecer, a minder in 1853. By 1855 he is a cotton spinner operative.8,9,10 He died on 27 January 1871 in 66 Erskine Street, Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, England.1,11 His death was registered on 1 February 1871 by Elizabeth Bradley his widow, who made a X and gave her address as 32 Hibbert Street, Hulme in the Chorlton Register Office. The cause of his death was Bronchitis for one week.

She gave her husbands previous occupation as a coal miner of Sunnyside, Ludworth in the Saint Oswald Register Office. The cause of his death was Pernicious Anaemia and Cardiac Syncope.9

     Emma Ward was born on 16 May 1860 in Horsedge Fold, Oldham, Lancashire, England.2,3,4 She was the daughter of Thomas Shires Ward and Hannah Normington.2 Her birth was registered at Register Office on 16 June 1860 by Ann Ward who was the occupier of Horsedge Fold, Oldham. Ann signed with an X and declared the fathers occupation as a cotton spinner. Was Ann little Emmas Grandma? or did the registrar mishear the name Ann for Hannah !2

She married Charles Greathead, son of Jane Greathead, on 8 August 1880 in St Mary, The Parish Church, Prestwich, Lancashire, England, Emma lived at 8 Egerton Street, Oldham, Lancashire and Charles was living at 24 Ratcliffe Street, in Oldham, he was an iron moulder. The ceremony was witnessed by Henry Hancock and Mary Goldthorpe.5,6 In the census of 3 April 1881 in 24 Lodge Street, Oldham, Lancashire, England, she was listed as the wife of Charles Greathead.7 Emma informed the authorities of her son Ernest's death.2 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 182 Shaw Road, Oldham, Lancashire, England, she was listed as the wife of Charles Schofield.8 I have been sent a wonderful picture of Ethel and her two sisters Alice and Ada.2 She died on 4 November 1953 in 78 Devon Street, Oldham, Lancashire, England, aged 93.9 Her death was registered on 5 November 1953 by her granddaughter V Coombes # 12233 of 78 Devon Street, Oldham in the Register Office. The cause of her death was Cerebral Thrombosis and Monkebergs Sclorosis.2
