Richard Greathead was born about 1812 in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, England.1 He was the son of Robert Greathead and Ann Haslam.2 He married Sarah Whitworth on 25 December 1836 in Collegiate, Manchester, Lancashire, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Sarah Peatfield (X) and Charles Andrew. Both Sarah and Richard were spinners.2,3,4,5 His wife Sarah died on 1 September 1838 in Trumpet Street, Deansgate, Manchester, Lancashire, England.2,6,7 Richard was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 6 June 1841 in 7 Evans Street, Manchester, Lancashire, England, Richard was a cotton spinner and had his mother and step sisters living with him.8 He married Elizabeth Barlow on 25 December 1841 in St Mary, Prestwich, Manchester, Lancashire, England, Richard was a widower of Oldham when he married his second wife Elizabeth. The marriage was performed after banns were read and witnessed by John Hunt who left his mark of X, and James Sheldrick. Both Richard and Elizabeth also left their mark as X and their address as Oldham. Richad was a spinner and his father Robert Greathead was a weaver No father was listed on the marriage certificate for Elizabeth.9,10,11,12,4,13,14 Richard was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 7 April 1861 in 32 Hibbert Street, Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, England, Richard was a spinner, bit of a mystery as with the many children is listed a Richard aged one month but the only Richard that seems to have been born is #1753 in 1862.15 Richard seems to have had several occupations all probably within the same industry. In 1849 he is described as a piecer, a minder in 1853. By 1855 he is a cotton spinner operative.16,17,18 Richard died on 27 January 1871 in 66 Erskine Street, Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, England.2,19

Charles Greathead was born on 25 June 1856 in Scotton, Richmond, Yorkshire, England, No father was indicated on the birth certificate.2,3 He was the son of Jane Greathead. In the census of 7 April 1861 in Scotton, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the grand son of Edward Greathead He was listed as William although I believe this was Charles.4 In the census of 2 April 1871 in 10 Low Plantation Row, Coxhoe, Durham, England, he was listed as the nephew of Joseph Ridley Charles was a labourer.5 He married Emma Ward, daughter of Thomas Shires Ward and Hannah Normington, on 8 August 1880 in St Mary, Prestwich, Lancashire, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Henry Hancock and Mary Goldthorpe. Emma lived at 8 Egerton Street, Oldham, Lancashire, her father Thomas Ward was an over corker. Charles was living at 24 Ratcliffe Street, in Oldham, he was an iron moulder. He states his father was William Greathead deceased but since there was no fathers name on the birth certificate I think this may be for the benefit of the vicar.6,7,8,9,10,11,12 Charles was listed as the head of the family on the census of 3 April 1881 in 24 Lodge Street, Oldham, Lancashire, England, Charles was an moulder iron.13 It would appear that Charles Schofield was living with Emma and Charles Greathead in 1886.14 Charles was listed as the head of the family on the census of 5 April 1891 in 182 Shaw Road, Oldham, Lancashire, England, Charles was an iron moulder.15 Charles died on 13 September 1908 in County Hospital, Durham, England, aged 52 from pernicious anaemia cardiac syncope.16,14

John Henry Greathead was born in 1867 in Haverdon Hill, Abbington, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England.2,3,4,5 He was the son of Thomas Greathead and Mary Whittaker. In the census of 2 April 1871 in 22 Burnhope, Holmside, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Thomas Greathead John was a scholar.6 In the census of 3 April 1881 in Burnhope, Holmside, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Thomas Greathead John was a coal miner.7 He was a coal carter (horse and wagon) a bookmaker and a deputy (type of foreman) at Streetly Colliery, nr Worksop, seemed a bit versatile. He also applied for a hangmans job.8 John enlisted in Newcastle upon Tyne on 10 December 1885 when he was aged 18 years 11 months old into the Durham Light Infantry. His Number was 2262. He was discharged on 9 December 1897.9 John signed on for short term service on 24 April 1900 into the Royal Reserve Regiment, he had formerly served in the Durham Light Infantry. He was a miner of 34 years. He admitted to serving 7 days imprisonment. He was 5 foot 10 inches tall, weighing in at 152 lbs, had a chest measurement of 35 inches, with fair complexion, brown eyes and brown hair.10 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 5 Burn Place, Willington, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Thomas Greathead John was a coal miner hewer.11 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 5 Burn Place, Willington Court, Willington, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Thomas Greathead John was a bricklayer.12 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 5 Burn Place, Willington, Durham, England, he was listed as the step son of Elizabeth Greathead John was a coal mine hewer working for Miner, Strakers and Love Ltd but was out of work.13 John died in 1929 in Durham, England.14
