Chart 1 My Direct Family - Edward Greathead
Jane Cockfield was born about 1791 in Durham, England.2 She married William Greathead, son of Paul Greathead and Ann Whitfield, on 27 April 1812 in St Mary, Staindrop, Teesdale, Durham, England, after the banns had been read in both the church where they married and St Mary Whorlton where William worshipped last read on 19 April. Staindrop is eight miles East from Heighington, four miles north of Whorlton.3,4,5,6,7 Jane was listed as the head of the family on the census of 6 June 1841 in Northside of Bishop Street, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, I suspect Jane was staying with her daughter Ann and her two small children. Ann's daughter Ann died later that year, so maybe she was poorly.8 Jane died in 1842 in Darlington, Durham, England.2,9

By 1913 he was living in Penhillvale, Barolin, Musgarve, Wide Bay, Queensland with his mother. But by 1919 he had turned his hand to farming an was living in Barolin Road, Musgarve, Wide Bay, Queensland. In 1925 he is back teaching at the State School, Habana, Landsborough, Moreton, Queensland.7 Siblings Annie and Robert appeared on the Australian electoral roll as living at Penhillvale, Barolin, Musgrave, Wide Bay, Queensland in 1913. Annie was a listed as a nurse and Robert a teacher.7 Alice, Catherine, John, Robert and William all lived in Barolin Road and appeared in the Australian electoral rolls in 1919. By 1930 Alice and Robert had moved on and Julia, John's wife was living there.7 Robert died on 1 July 1927 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, aged 48.1,2,8 His obituary in the The Brisbane Courier of Saturday 9 July 1927 read: By the passing of Mr. Robert Stott Greathead, the head teacher of the Glen View School, Mooloolah, many persons throughout the State experienced a great shock. Mr. Greathead, who had been ailing for some few weeks before, was a man yet in the prime of life, having reached his 48th year; but his had been a crowded and a useful life, and he leaves a distinct void in the sphere in which he moved. He was a most able, upright, and loyal public servant-a man of high ideals as well as high attainments. A well-furnished mind, a well-balanced poise, an athletic and active body, in him combined to show, a notable example of the old Roman desideratum, " Mens sana in corpore sano"; and all his working life he had served his department and the State of Queensland efficiently and well. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Greathead, pioneers of the Bundaberg district; he commenced his scholastic career at Nambour, and taught afterwards at Landsborough, Beaudesert, Brisbane, Richmond, Fairhill, Yandina, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Longreach, and Mackay; while for some years he was a member of the itinerant staff in the Cloncurry district, Mr, Greathead also took much interest in sports, and years ago he was well known, on the North Coast particularly, as a fine and enthusiastic cricketer a game he always encouraged in his sehools. He had a most attractive disposition, and was exceedingly popular with his pupils; and his genial cultured manner, tall athletic figure, and all-round manly qualities will be greatly missed. At his funeral, which was at Nudgee Cemetery, the chief mourners were Messrs. George Greathead (Nambour), John Greathead and William Greathead (Bundaberg), and the Misses Greathead, Sister Mary Elisabeth, of the Convent of Mercy (Ryde), Sister Anne Greathead, Mrs. G. S. MacDonald, and Mrs. M. Dalton, of Innisfail all relations of deceased. Others at the graveside included Messrs. C. D. Edwards, R. H. Julius, J. D. Quaid, F. Walsh, and Thoa. Collins; while wreaths were sent by the directors of the Moreton Central Sugar Mill, Nambour, "George, Nellie, and Family," "Children of the Glenview School," and Mr. C. D. Edwards.9 He was buried in 1927 in Nudgee Catholic Cemetery, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, in the same grave as his brother William Mark Greathead.2,8,10
