The actual date of the accident uncertain but believed to be about one week prior to his death. His grandson Norman Tunley apparently said that William went to the Klondike Gold Rush and returned with about £20,000, some of which he subsequently lost playing cards. The remains of this money enabled his wife Ann to bring up the remaining children after his death. It is also the reason that there was never a deck of playing cards in the Richard/Mabel household.²
