Edith Florence Greathead née Anderson
Edith Florence Anderson was born on 9 May 1900 in Mile End Old Town Workhouse, Mile End, London, England, Her mother admitted herself into Mile End Old Town workhouse on 9 May 1900 being pregnant and gave birth to a female child (Edith) on that day. She gave her address as 21 Arbour Square. They were both discharged on 25 May 1900.1,2,3 She was the daughter of Daisy Florence Anderson. In the census of 31 March 1901 in 23 Hudson Road, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, England, she was listed as the grandaughter of the widowed Sarah Anderson who was listed as a needlewoman. Her Aunt Violet, a domestic servant was with them. Her mother Daisy was living at 11 Market Place, Kingston.4 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 25 Hudson Road, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, England, she was listed as the grandaughter of Sarah Anderson Sarah was a needlewoman living with her daughter Voilet and grandaughter Edith, just 10 months old.4 Reuben and Edith were two of the "home children" and were sent to Canada by Bernardo Homes. Reuben went on the ship Dominion leaving Liverpool on 24 May 1906. He arrived in Quebec on 3 June 1906. Edith sailed on the Scicilian leaving London on 10 July 1909 arriving in Quebec on 24 July 1909. They met on the same farm and later married.1,5,6,7,8 She married Reuben Francis Greathead, son of Samuel F Greathead and Elizabeth Hyde, on 8 April 1921 in Brant, Ontario, Canada, Interestingly, Reuben stated the incorrect name of his father on his marriage certificate he said George, he also stated he thought his mother was called Julia but did not know her maiden name. I guess leaving England aged six was difficult for him to remember family names. Both George and Julia were names of his siblings. He was described as a labourer and Edith as a maid on their marriage certificate. The methodist ceremony was witnessed by Jane Schofield of 29 Terrace Hill Street, Brantford and Eleanor Smythe of 23 Terrace Hill Street, Brantford.1,9 In the census of 1 June 1921 in 297 Rawdon, Brantford County, Ontario, Canada, she was listed as the wife of Reuben Francis Greathead.10 She was employed at Dr Holbrook Hamilton's, Sanitorium. Edith died on 18 January 1978 in Canada aged 77.1
