He got out of his depth and was sinking when his father who was sitting on the bank, jumped immediately to his assistance and was drawing him into shallow water when he unfortunately slipped and lost hold of his son. He saw him rise to the surface once more but could not reach him. The body was picked up almost immediately by some men but life was extinct. An inquest was held and the verdict of accidental drowning was returned - Norwich Mercury.4,5

In the census of 6 June 1841 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland, he was listed as the son of Featherstone Greathead.3 Robert was a steward whose last vessel was Arena. He recalled at the Old Bailey on 22 August 1855 that on Thursday 9 August at about 2:30 in the morning he met a lady called Eliza Brown in the City Road. She asked him for some money for a drink. He told her he was not inclined and wanted to go home. She pressed him suggesting they went to Levy's in the City Road. Apparently they walked together to the top of Paradise Street when Robert felt a twitch in his coat pocket, hearing a snap and found his watch missing. Two men approached saying they would fetch the police. They did not return. Robert under cross examination stated he had been ashore for three months and had been up to the Eagle that night and then to a friend's house where he had drunk only three glasses of wine. He declared he was sober.
Eliza was aged 18 and found guilty of theft. One of the men who said they would call the police was also found guilty of receiving. His name was Edward Taylor aged 19, and this was his second offence. They were confined for nine months for stealing the watch with a value of six shillings.4 Robert set off on the rigging ship Zephyr as a steward on 14 December 1855 into the whaling grounds of the Pacific, returning on 5 August 1859. The Port of Registry was New Bedford.5
