     Jane Dobson was born about 1824 in Scorton, Richmond, Yorkshire, England.1 She was the daughter of Thomas Dobson.3 She married George Greathead, son of Francis Greathead and Jane Jackson, on 23 November 1847 in Darlington, Durham, England.4 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Whickham, Gateshead, Durham, England, she was listed as the wife of George Greathead.5 In the census of 7 April 1861 in East Side, Hope Street, Crook, Durham, England, she was listed as the wife of George Greathead.6 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Kings Arms, Hope Street, Crook, Durham, England, she was listed as the wife of George Greathead.7 In the census of 3 April 1881 in 34 Church Hill, Helmington Row, Auckland, Durham, England, she was listed as the wife of George Greathead.8 Jane died on 19 October 1884 in Auckland, Durham, England.9 Jane was buried in St Thomas, Stanley near Crook, Durham, England, under a headstone with her sons Thomas aged 17, Henry aged 4, Thomas aged 4 and the twins Thomas and Francis who died at birth.10

In the census of 3 April 1881 in 3 Campbell St West, Wolsingham, Weardale, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of George Greathead John was a scholar.3 In the census of 5 April 1891 in No 2 Hedley Hope Terrace, Hedley, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of George Greathead John was a labourer at the coal mine.4 In the census of 31 March 1901 in No 10 Wilker Hill, Lanchester, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of George Greathead John labourer in coal mine.5 He married Ethel Egglestone on 13 October 1906 in Register Office, Chester le Street, Durham, England.6 John was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 40 Pine Street, Grange Villa, Chester le Street, Durham, England, John was a coke drawer living with his family in their two roomed home. In the census of 3 April 1881 in 3 Campbell St West, Wolsingham, Weardale, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of George Greathead.5 In the census of 5 April 1891 in No 2 Hedley Hope Terrace, Hedley, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of George Greathead George was a scholar.6 In the census of 31 March 1901 in New Pavillion Terrace, Lanchester, Durham, England, he was listed as the boarder staying with William Smith and his family. He worked as a coalminers hewer.7 He married Gertrude Alice Pull, daughter of John Thomas Pull and Mary Ann Cory, on 18 April 1903 in St Patricks Parish Church, Winlaton, Gateshead, Durham, England, afer the banns were read. The ceremony was witnessed by Matthew Pull and Miriam Pull. George was a miner aged 25 and Alice aged 23. Both of them gave their address as High Spen.8 George was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 94 Queen Street, Grange Villa, Chester le Street, Durham, England, George was a coke drawer living with his wife and children in their four roomed home. The household also contained Gertrude's brother Ernest and a boarder Joseph Sheardon.9 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register George was listed as living at Chester le Street, Durham, England with his wife Gertrude. In the census of 3 April 1881 in 3 Campbell St West, Wolsingham, Weardale, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of George Greathead.6 Nathan and James were admitted into St James's School, Clayton-le-Moors in January 1887. Their father was listed as George Greathead of 11 St James Street. The record states they were both withdrawn in September 1887.4 In the census of 5 April 1891 in No 2 Hedley Hope Terrace, Hedley, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of George Greathead.7 He married Elizabeth Ann Gleghorn, daughter of William Halliday Gleghorn and Elizabeth Hetherington, in 1901 in Durham, England.8 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 26 Queen Street, Brandon and Byshottles, Durham, England, he was listed as the boarder of William Rowell and family. He was a stone colliery man. His wife was staying with her parents.9 Nathan was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 61B Street, Newtown, Birtley, Durham, England, Nathan was a coal miner hewer living with his wife and children in their three roomed home. Nathan was an omnibus driver.12 His wife Elizabeth died on 1956 in Durham, England.13 Nathan died in 1966 in Durham, England.14 Nathan was buried on 18 January 1966 in Cemetery, Chester le Street, Durham, England, in Plot G448. His wife Elizabeth was buried in the same plot 10 years earlier.15,16

Jane Edith Greathead née Willey
     Jane Edith Willey was born on 27 January 1883 in Weardale, Durham, England, The National Register suggests her year of birth was 1884.2,3,4 She married George Greathead, son of George Greathead and Jane Pickering, in 1906 in Register Office, Hartlepool, Durham, England.5 In the census of 2 April 1911 in North Farm, Danby Wiske, Northallerton, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of George Greathead.6 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Jane was listed as living at The Forge, Bowburn, Durham, England with her husband George. And their son James. George was a Master Blacksmith.7 Jane died on 31 December 1948 in The Forge, Pit Laddie, Cornsay, Bowburn, Durham, England, aged 65.1,8,9 Jane was buried on 3 January 1949 in St Pauls Churchyard, Cassop-cum-Quarrington, Durham, England.10 Jane did not leave a will. Administration papers were issued on 28 January 1949 in Durham to her husband George, a blacksmith. Her effects were valued at £475 15s 10d.9

     Cornelius Southern was born on 3 October 1901 in Leigh, Lancashire, England.2 He married Ethel Greathead, daughter of George Greathead and Jane Edith Willey, in 1926 in Durham, England.3 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Cornelius was listed as living at 74 Saltersgill Avenue, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, England with his wife Ethel. Cornelius was an omnibus and parcel van driver with one other probably their son Gordon.4

George Greathead

Chart 3 - George Greathead
     George Greathead was born in 1846 in Leyburn, Yorkshire, England.1,2 He was the son of George Greathead and Ann Stott. In the census of 30 March 1851 at Melmerby, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of George Greathead.3 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Gammersgill, Carlton Highdale, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the grand son of John Stott.4 He married Anne O'Hagan, daughter of John O'Hagan and Mary Ann Gallagher, on 6 April 1869 in Maryborough Catholic Church, Maryborough, Queensland, Australia, by Father Paul Tissot a Frenchman. The ceremony was witnessed by George Ward and Mary Ann O'Hagan. Mary left her mark.

The family became pioneers of the sugar cane industry in the Woongarra district. George was one of the members of the first Barolin Divisional Board and was their chairman between 1883 - 1885. Through his interest in education he donated the land on which the original Woongarra State School was built.2,5,6,7,8 George died on 9 September 1887 in Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia, Sadly he commited suicide shooting himself in the banana fields, over worry about the mill he had bought.5,9,10 George was buried on 10 September 1887 in Bundaberg Cemetery, Fitzgerald Street, Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia, in a private grave number P89 location C4. His wife was buried in the same grave with him in 1918. The service was held in a Wesleyan Church and the Minister was Rev Pearson. The funeral director was Timothy Buckley. His address was given as Penhillvale.11,12,13

     Hannah Sivil was born about 1842 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.1 She was the daughter of William Atkin Sivil and Ann West.2 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Latimer Street South, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, she was listed as the daughter of an unknown person.3 She married James Charles Greathead, son of George Greathead and Fanny Wilkinson, on 9 November 1862 in St Bartholomew, Edgebaston, Warwickshire, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Thomas Perry and Sarah Lewis. James was a brass founder.4,2,5 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Brunswick Place, Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, she was listed as the wife of James Charles Greathead.6 In the census of 3 April 1881 in 19 Allcock St, Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, she was listed as the wife of James Charles Greathead.7 Hannah's husband died 15 May 1889.
