     Richard Greathead was born on 23 November 1862 in 32 Hibbert Street, Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, England.2,3,4 He was the son of Richard Greathead and Elizabeth Barlow. In the census of 2 April 1871 in 32 Hibbert Street, Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, England, he was listed as the son of Elizabeth Bradley Richard was a scholar.5 He married Mary Rostron on 1 January 1887 in St Peter, Bolton le Moors, Lancashire, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Alfred Rostron and Louisa Barlow. Mary gave her address as 24 Back Fairfield Street and Richard 19 Fairfield Street. His occupation was a spindle and flyer maker.6,7,8,9 Richard was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 5 April 1891 in 9 Howell Croft, Bolton, Lancashire, England, Richard was a pressman, his brother Robert was lodging at no 7 next door with Robert and Margaret Barlow.10 He was Mary gave Richard's occupation as a spindle maker journeyman on the birth certificate of their son Herbert in 1893.11 Richard was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 at 9 Remur Street, Bolton, Lancashire, England, Richard was a presser finisher.12 Her mother Elizabeth died on 25 January 1905.13,14 Richard was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 13 Arthur Street, Bolton, Lancashire, England, Richard was a presser finisher in the iron foundry living with his wife and four children in their five roomed home.15 Richard was listed as head of household in the census of 19 June 1921 in 13 Arthur Street, Bolton, Lancashire, England, Richard was lving with his wife and two daughters. He was a spindle and flyer maker working for William Ryder Ltd in Tolds Road in Bolton.16 His wife Mary died on 1 July 1935 in 13 Arthur Street, Bolton, Lancashire, England.17,18,19 He received the Administration of her estate on 24 July 1935. He was listed as a spindle and fly maker.18 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Richard was listed as living at 13 Arthur Street, Bolton, Lancashire, England, with his two daughters Alice and Emily and a unknown fourth person. Richard was a retired spindle and Fly maker. Alice was a quilt loom weaver.20 Richard died in 1942 in Bolton, Lancashire, England.21,22,23 Richard was buried on 4 December 1942 in Tonge Cemetery, Bolton, Lancashire, England, in plot 3 H4 80 on grant order 1760, the same plot as his wife Mary who was buried seven years earlier. Richard was a spindle and flyer maker and lived in 13 Arthur Street.23

He married Pamela Devonport in 1970 in Durham, England.4 His wife Pamela died on 26 April 2018 in Durham, England, her parents were reported as Elsie and Peter.5,6 Thomas died on 2 July 2022 in Ferryhill, Sedgefield, Durham, England, The newspaper article stated he was dearly beloved husband of the late Pamand dad of John, Peter and Andrew.7 His body was cremated after a funeral service at St Luke's Church in Ferryhill on 25 July 2022 in Durham Crematorium, South Road, Durham, Durham, England.7

     William Greig was born about 1840 in Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham, England.2 He married Hannah Nelson.2 William was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 3 April 1881 in 19 Mary Street, Stranton, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, William was a ships carpenter, while his son William was an apprentice in the same trade, Albert was a plumber and the children John, Arthur, Charles, Jane and Alexander were scholars.3 He was a shipwright as appeared on his daughter Ada's marriage certificate in 1887.4

He married Mary Powel on 8 April 1824 in St Garmons, Llanfechain, Montgomeryshire, Wales, They married after taking out a licence on 8 April 1824 in the Diocese of Saint Asaph.4,5 His wife Mary died on July 1824 a few days after birth of daughter Mary.4 He married Jane Gabriel, daughter of John Gabriel and Jane Humphreys, on 28 August 1828 in Oswestry, Shropshire, England, Jane was William's second wife.6,7,4 William was listed as the head of the family on the census of 6 June 1841 in Llanyblodwel, Shropshire, England, William was an agricultural labourer living with his wife and children.8 John and William shared the remainder of their fathers estate after his funeral expenses and bequests had been paid.4 William was listed as head of household in the census of 30 March 1851 at Llanyblodwel, Shropshire, England, William was a farmer occupying 10 acres.9 William was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 7 April 1861 in Blodwel, Shropshire, England, William was a coal carrier living with his wife and two of his sons, Richard and John.10 William died on 20 February 1865 in Blodwel, Porthywaen, Shropshire, England, William's death was announced with that of his son Elijah's in the same month in the Border Counties Advertiser of 15 March 1865.1,11,3,12,13 William was buried on 27 February 1865 in St Michael the Archangel, Llanyblodwel, Shropshire, England.3,7 Elijah and his father William are buried under the same gravestone.4

     Elizabeth Sarah Greathed was born on 13 September 1908 in St George Hanover Square, London, England.1,2 She was the daughter of Robert Napier Greathed and Alice Maud Greenly. In the census of 2 April 1911 in 24 Burton Court, Chelsea, London, England, she was listed as the daughter of Robert Napier Greathed.3 The passenger list for the ship Galician which sailed on 28 March 1914 from Southampton bound for South Africa shows Robert and his wife, two children, a nurse and butler. Robert is listed as being in the army.4 They returned first class from Cape Town arriving on 18 August 1915 aboard the ship Briton.5 In the census of 19 June 1921 in Golwich Cottage, Puttenham, Godalming, Surrey, England, she was listed as the daughter of Alice Maud Greathed.6 Elizabeth was keenly interested in the Girl Guide movementand was a popular officer, bearing the rank of Lieutenant in the Bourne Company. She also took a great interest in the British Red Cross and was a member of the Surrey, No 56 VAD.7 Elizabeth died on 10 September 1933 in The Birches, Lower Bourne, Farnham, Surrey, England, aged 24 She had not been in good health for some time, her last illness was of short duration.8,7,2 Elizabeth was buried on 14 September 1933 in Titley Parish Church, Titley, Herefordshire, England, The grave had been lined with moss and mounted with choice flowers.7

     Anthony Greathead was born on 22 November 1913 in Houghton le Spring, Durham, England.2,3 He was the son of Joseph Henry Greathead and Ann Carr. In the census of 19 June 1921 in 24 Stamley Street, Houghton le Spring, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Ann Greathead.4 He married Joan Cora Heron in 1938 in Houghton le Spring, Durham, England.5 Anthony was wounded in the Normandy landings at the battle of Caen in 1944 and needed to attend Stoke Manderville Hospital. He had head wounds which left him disabled although he was able to eventually walk with a stick and held down full time employment, until his death.1
Anthony died on 26 November 1969 in 7 Fellside Gardens, Belmont, Durham, England, aged 56.6,7 The will of Anthony was proved on 9 March 1970 in Newcastle upon Tyne. His effects were valued at £4192.7

     Joseph Henry Greathead was born in 1870 in Northallerton, Yorkshire, England.4,2,5,6 He was the son of Anthoney Greathead and Margaret Pinkney. In the census of 2 April 1871 in Romanby, Northallerton, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Anthoney Greathead.7 In the census of 3 April 1881 in Village, Romanby, Northallerton, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Anthoney Greathead Joseph was a scholar.8 In the census of 5 April 1891 in Driffield Terrace, St Mary Bishopshill, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the servant and footman for the Lawson family.9 He married Janet Cairns in 1895 in St Lawrence, York, Yorkshire, England, Janet was Joseph's first wife. It is believed that they may also have had a son called Ernie but I can find no trace in the GRO records.1,10,11,12 His wife Janet died on 1900 in Houghton le Spring, Durham, England.13 Joseph was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 at 29 Martland St, Houghton le Spring, Durham, England, Joseph was a domestic gardener.14 He was was a Coachman for the local Doctor at Houghton le Spring, Co Durham. He married Ann Carr in 1904 in Houghton le Spring, Durham, England, Ann was Joseph's second wife.15 Joseph signed up into the Territorial Force of the Durham Light Infantry in April 1908 in Washington aged 37 years 11 months, he was a gardener for Houghton District Council and gave his address 27 Hopper Street, Houghton.16 Joseph was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in Balmers Buildings, Houghton le Spring, Durham, England, Joseph was living with his wife and children in their three roomed home. He worked as a waker man for the urban district council. Ann's sister Mary was stayng with them. She worked as a domestic general servant.17 He died on 3 October 1916 in 16 Balmer Street, Houghton le Spring, Durham, England, details are on the Houghton le Spring war memorial. Corporal 490, Joseph, sadly succumbed to the flu epidemic. The telegram in his war record states he died from acute lobar pneumonia. A plaque is also in St Michael and All Angels, The Broadway, Houghton le Spring on which includes on panel 2 Joseph's name as Corporal J H Greathead. The plaque honours those that fell in WW1. Seven hunderd pounds was raised and a memorial cenotaph of 18 foot 6 inches was erected in the churchyard. It was unveiled on 7 November 1925 by the Earl of Durham. Joseph appeared as one of the glorious dead.1,18,19,20,21,22 Corporal Joseph Greathead 490, 1st/8th Bn., Durham Light Infantry who died age 46 from pneumonia on Tuesday 3 October 1916 is remembered with honour on the Houghton-Spring war memorial and buried in the cemetery Plot D2426.18,22 Joseph did not leave a will. Administration papers were issued on 19 October 1916 in Durham to his widow Ann Greathead. His effects were valued at £197 19s 0d.20

     Ann Carr was born in 1883 in Hetton, Durham, England.1,2,3 She married Joseph Henry Greathead, son of Anthoney Greathead and Margaret Pinkney, in 1904 in Houghton le Spring, Durham, England, Ann was Joseph's second wife.4 In the census of 2 April 1911 in Balmers Buildings, Houghton le Spring, Durham, England, she was listed as the wife of Joseph Henry Greathead.5 Her husband Joseph died on 3 October 1916 in 16 Balmer Street, Houghton le Spring, Durham, England, details are on the Houghton le Spring war memorial. Corporal 490, Joseph, sadly succumbed to the flu epidemic. The telegram in his war record states he died from acute lobar pneumonia. A plaque is also in St Michael and All Angels, The Broadway, Houghton le Spring on which includes on panel 2 Joseph's name as Corporal J H Greathead. The plaque honours those that fell in WW1. Seven hunderd pounds was raised and a memorial cenotaph of 18 foot 6 inches was erected in the churchyard. It was unveiled on 7 November 1925 by the Earl of Durham. Joseph appeared as one of the glorious dead.1,6,7,8,9,10 She received administration on his effects on 19 October 1916 in Durham.8 From 30 April 1917 Ann was awarded a pension of thirty shillings a week for herself and four children.11 Ann was living in May 1919 at 24 Stanley Street, Houghton le Spring with her four children.11 Ann was listed as head of household in the census of 19 June 1921 in 24 Stamley Street, Houghton le Spring, Durham, England, Ann was living with her four children.12 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Ann was listed as living at 24 Stanley Street, Houghton le Spring, Durham, England.13 Ann died in 1951 in Durham, England.1,14

     Gladys Ruth Vera Newsome was born on 15 May 1919.4 She was the daughter of Thomas Dearnley Newsome. She married Thomas Harold Greathead, son of Alfred Thomas Greathead and Agnes Mabel Scragg, on 20 June 1942 in St Mary the Virgin, Buxton, Derbyshire, England, The ceremony was witnessed by Thos Henry Broadbent Newsome and Marjorie Rita Howard. Thomas lived at 5 Welbeck Avenue.5,6 Her husband Thomas died on December 1984 in Poynton, Cheshire, England, aged 68.7 Gladys died on 26 December 2004 in Hazelmere, Handforth, Cheshire, England, aged 85.8,9,10 Her body was cremated at Macclesfield Crematorium after a funeral service at 11:30 am at St Georges Chyrch, Poynton on 10 January 2005.11

     Arthur Albert Greated was born on 18 November 1902 in Dartford, Kent, England.1 He was the son of Albert French Greated and Isabel Rose Mulcare. He was baptised on 1 February 1903 in Christ Church, Bexley Heath, Kent, England, his father was a Grocer's Assistant.2 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 62 Eglinton Road, Plumstead, Woolwich, London, England, he was listed as the son of Albert French Greated Arthur was at school.3 He married Grace May Sutchall on 11 October 1930 in St Mary the Virgin, Prittlewell, Essex, England, after the banns had been read on 31 August, 7 and 14 September 1930 in Sr Mary the Virgin where they married and St Andrew, Uxbridge where Arthur lived.4,5,6 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Arthur was listed as living at 3 Mead Way, Ashford, Middlesex, England, with his wife Grace. Arthur was a journalist and press photographer.7 Arthur died on 17 January 1964 in Fairwinds, Kingswood Rise, Englefield Green, Surrey, England, aged 61.8,9 Arthur did not leave a will. Administration papers were issued on 8 April 1964 to the Midland Bank Executor and Trustee Company Ltd.9
