     Fred Greathead was born on 19 March 1888 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England.2,3,4,5,6 He was the son of John Greathead and Ellen Newton. He was baptised on 13 May 1888 in St Barnabas, Heaton, Yorkshire, England, Hetty, Arthur and Fred were all baptised together. Their father was described as a stoker living at Frigingham.7 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 12 Midland Terrace, Heaton, Bradford, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of John Greathead.8 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 3 Regent Grove, Harrogate, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of John Greathead.9 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 10 Brinkburn Road, Scarborough, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as a boarder of Martha Wood a 73 year old widow. Fred was staying in her four roomed home. He was an electrician.10 Fred signed up for short service on 10 June 1915 giving his address as 31 Gladstone Road, Scarborough. His age was 27 years 3 month and his occupation an electrician. Fred was five foot ten and half inches tall with a chest measurement of 38 inches. His next of kin was given as his father 10 Regent Road, Starbeck, Harrogate. He had a fresh complexion, grey eyes and brown hair. Fred served with the Royal Engineers.11,12 He married Florence Mary Nightingale in 1918 in Bedfordshire, England.13 Fred was listed as head of household in the census of 19 June 1921 in 44 Oak Road, Scarborough, Yorkshire, England, Fred was an electrical engineer at 6 Bar Street, Scarborough. He was living with his wife and son.14 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Fred was listed as living at Huntriss Row, Scarborough, Yorkshire, England, with his wife Florence. And their son Eric. Both Fred and his father were electricans and radio engineers.15 Fred owned an electrical shop in Huntress Row in Scarborough, which passed later to his son Eric.16 The will of John was proved by Fred Greathead his son on 3 September 1949.17 Fred died on 21 November 1971 in 13a The Crescent, Scarborough, Yorkshire, England, aged 83.18,17 The will of Fred was proved on 9 March 1972 in Leeds. His effects were valued at £18,577.17

     Mary Ann Stephenson was born about 1821 in Pickering, Yorkshire, England.2,3,4 She married Richard Wallis in 1853 in Pickering, Yorkshire, England.1,5 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Corn Gaw Farm, Upleatham, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Richard Wallis.6 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Corngrave Farm, Upleatham, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Richard Wallis.7 In the census of 3 April 1881 in Corngrave Farm, Upleatham, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Richard Wallis.8 Her husband Richard died on 1881 in Guisborough, Yorkshire, England.9 She married Thomas Greathead, son of Francis Greathead and Margaret Thompson, in 1885 in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England.10 In the census of 5 April 1891 in Bramble Farm, Ormesby, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Thomas Greathead grandaughter and 5 servants also staying. Her husband was buried with her in 1908.15 The will of Mary was proved on 3 December 1904 in York to her husband Thomas a farmer and her brother in law John Hind a commercial clerk. Her effects were valued at £1505.16

     Ellen Frances Davis was born on 12 April 1860 in Boyton, Wiltshire, England.1,2 She was the daughter of William Davis and Annica Elizabeth Bradford.3 In the census of 5 April 1891 in "Villa Hope", Sunny Side, Weston, Somerset, England, she was listed as the companion of an unknown person when Emily died Ellen married Emily's widower Stephenson.4 She married Stephenson Greatheed, son of Samuel Stephenson Greatheed and Margaret Stephenson, on 11 April 1899 in St John, Weston super Mare, Somerset, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by M David and Annie E Davis. Stephenson was a widower and like his father Samuel Stephenson Greatheed was a clerk in holy orders from Chislehurst in Kent. Ellen was from St Patrick's Weston super Mare and her father William Davis was listed as a Gentleman. Ellen was the second daughter of Captain Davis the Hon Secretary of the Clifton Beagles and lived at St Patrick's, Southside, Weston super Mare. She was attended by three bridesmaids, Miss H David, Miss M Gill and Miss Daltry, the brother of the bridegroom officiated as bestman. The ceremony was performed by Rev E J Morris. An "at home" was held at St Patricks, later in the day the newly wedded couple left for Cornwall for their honeymoon. Ellen had been companion to Stephenson's wife before she died.5,6,7 In the census of 31 March 1901 she was listed as the wife of Stephenson Greatheed.8 In the census of 2 April 1911 in Wardley, Church Lane, Chislehurst, Kent, England, she was listed as the wife of Stephenson Greatheed.9 Her husband Stephenson died on 11 September 1913 in Wardley, Church Lane, Chislehurst, Kent, England, aged 73.10,11 Ellen received probate in London on 16 October 1913.11 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Ellen was listed as living at 4 Lonsdale Road, Bournemouth, Dorset, England, who was living by Private Means with Hilda Price her cook and Elizabeth Francis her house Parlour Maid.1 Ellen died on 16 November 1939 in 4 Lonsdale Road, Winton, Bournemouth, Dorset, England, aged 79.11,12 Ellen was buried in St Nicholas' churchyard, Chislehurst, Kent, England, Ellen was buried with her husband under the same gravestone.13 The will of Ellen was proved on 18 December 1939 in London to Halsey Jansen a solicitor and Mary Davis a spinster and presumably Ellens sister. Ellens estate was valued as £8838 11s 9d.11

He was baptised on 25 February 1883 in Sancton, Yorkshire, England, his father was a farmer.2 In the census of 5 April 1891 in King Street, Pocklington, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Charles Greathead Francis was a scholar.3 In the census of 31 March 1901 in King Street, Pocklington, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Charles Greathead.4 He married Lottie Boyes in 1910 in Pocklington, Yorkshire, England.5 Francis was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in Sancton, Brough, Yorkshire, England, Frank was a farmer living with his wife and two servants in their eight roomed home.6 Francis was listed as head of household in the census of 19 June 1921 in Hessleskew, Sancton, Yorkshire, England, Francis was a farmer living with his wife and daughter.7 His brother John died on 28 July 1928.8,9 The Administration of his estate was received by Francis on 8 October 1928. In the census of 5 April 1891 in King Street, Pocklington, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Charles Greathead Alfred was a scholar.4 In the census of 31 March 1901 in King Street, Pocklington, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Charles Greathead.5 In the census of 2 April 1911 in Sancton, Pocklington, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Charles Greathead Alfred was working on the farm.6 In the census of 19 June 1921 in High Street, Sancton, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the brother of John Robert Greathead Alfred was listed as a beast man.7 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Alfred was listed as living at Pocklington, Yorkshire, England, he was a farm labourer.2 Alfred died on 15 June 1959 in East Riding General Hospital, Driffield, Yorkshire, England, aged 73.8,9 Alfred did not leave a will.      Charles Cartwright Brown was born in 1876 in Bourne, Lincolnshire, England.2,3 He married Frances Greathead, daughter of Francis Rice Greathead and Sarah Ann Bush, in December 1898 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.1,4,2 Charles was a soldier in 1901 according to the 1901 census where his wife was described as a soldier's wife. She and their son Charles were staying with her parents in Sheffield.2 Charles was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 216 Crookes Moor Road, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, Charles interestingly describes himself as Charles Arthur although I am pretty sure it is the correct man. He describes himself as a horsekeeper to a coal merchant and removal contractor living with his wife and children in their six room home.5

     Janet Cairns was born in 1862 in South Shields, Durham, England, It is believed her name was Janet although there is some thought it may have been called Joan during her lifetime. She is registered as Janet for her birth and death in the GRO index.1,2 She married Joseph Henry Greathead, son of Anthoney Greathead and Margaret Pinkney, in 1895 in St Lawrence, York, Yorkshire, England, Janet was Joseph's first wife. It is believed that they may also have had a son called Ernie but I can find no trace in the GRO records.3,4,5,6 Janet died in 1900 in Houghton le Spring, Durham, England.7 Janet was buried in Hillside Cemetery, Houghton le Spring, Durham, England.8

The marriage was performed after banns were read and witnessed by John Hunt who left his mark of X, and James Sheldrick. Both Richard and Elizabeth also left their mark as X and their address as Oldham. Richad was a spinner and his father Robert Greathead was a weaver No father was listed on the marriage certificate for Elizabeth.4,5,6,7,8,9,10 In the census of 7 April 1861 in 32 Hibbert Street, Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, England, she was listed as the wife of Richard Greathead.11 Her husband Richard died on 27 January 1871 in 66 Erskine Street, Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, England.3,12 Elizabeth was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1871 at 32 Hibbert Street, Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, England, Elizabeth was a housekeeper.13 In the census of 3 April 1881 in 13 Bk Ormrod Street, Great Bolton, Lancashire, England, she was listed as sister in law of Richard Greathead a widower and an iron turner.
