Fred was staying in her four roomed home. He was an electrician.⁹ Fred signed up for short service on 10 June 1915 giving his address as 31 Gladstone Road, Scarborough. His age was 27 years 3 month and his occupation an electrician. Fred was five foot ten and half inches tall with a chest measurement of 38 inches. His next of kin was given as his father 10 Regent Road, Starbeck, Harrogate. He had a fresh complexion, grey eyes and brown hair. In the census of 5 April 1891 in No 2 Hedley Hope Terrace, Hedley, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of George Greathead.⁴ In the census of 31 March 1901 in No 10 Wilker Hill, Lanchester, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of George Greathead.² She married Robert Smurthwaite in 1907 in Auckland, Durham, England.⁵ In the census of 2 April 1911 in Gilroy Square, Crook, Durham, England, she was listed as the wife of Robert Smurthwaite.⁶ She died in 1911 in Auckland, Durham, England.⁷

     Ellen Frances Davis was born about 1863 in Boyton, Wiltshire, England.² She was the daughter of William Davis and Annica Elizabeth Bradford.¹ In the census of 5 April 1891 in "Villa Hope", Sunny Side, Weston, Somerset, England, she was listed as the companion of an unknown person when Emily died Ellen married Emily's widower Stephenson.³ She married Stephenson Greatheed, son of Samuel Stephenson Greatheed and Margaret Stephenson, on 11 April 1899 in All Saints, Axbridge, Somerset, England, Ellen was the second daughter of cap David the hon secretary of the Clifton Beagles. She lived at St Patrick's, Southside, Weston super Mare and was attended by three bridesmaids, Miss H David, Miss M Gill and Miss Daltry, the brother of the bridegroom officiated as bestman. The ceremony was performed by Rev E J Morris. An "at home" was held at St Patricks and late in the day the newly wedded couple left for Cornwall for their honeymoon. Ellen had been companion to Stephenson's wife before she died.^4,5 In the census of 31 March 1901 she was listed as the wife of Stephenson Greatheed.⁶ In the census of 2 April 1911 in Wardley, Church Lane, Chislehurst, Kent, England, she was listed as the wife of Stephenson Greatheed.⁷ Ellen's husband Rev Stephenson died 11 September 1913. She received probate in London on 16 October 1913.⁸ She died on 16 November 1939 in 4 Lonsdale Road, Winton, Bournemouth, Dorset, England.^8,9 She was buried in St Nicholas' churchyard, Chislehurst, Kent, England, Ellen was buried with her husband under the same gravestone.¹⁰ The will of Ellen was proved on 18 December 1939 in London to Halsey Jansen a solicitor and Mary Davis a spinster and presumably Ellens sister. Ellens estate was valued as £8838 11s 9d.⁸

     Francis Greathead was born in 1883 in Sancton, Yorkshire, England.^1,2 He was the son of Charles Greathead and Ann Smith. In the census of 5 April 1891 in King Street, Pocklington, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Charles Greathead Francis was a scholar.³ In the census of 31 March 1901 in King Street, Pocklington, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Charles Greathead.⁴ He married Lottie Boyes in 1910 in Pocklington, Yorkshire, England.⁵ Francis was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in Sancton, Brough, Yorkshire, England, Frank was a farmer living with his wife and two servants in their eight roomed home.⁶ His brother John Robert Greathead died on 28 July 1928.^7,8 The Administration of his estate was received by Francis on 8 October 1928. Francis was a farmer.⁸ He died on 12 February 1955 in Chestnut Villa, North Lane, Brough, Yorkshire, England.^9,8 The will of Francis was proved on 13 May 1955 to Lottie his wife in Yorkshire. His effects were valued at £5332 17s 3d.⁸

In the census of 5 April 1891 in King Street, Pocklington, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Charles Greathead Alfred was a scholar.³ In the census of 31 March 1901 in King Street, Pocklington, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Charles Greathead.⁴ In the census of 2 April 1911 in Sancton, Pocklington, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Charles Greathead Alfred was working on the farm.⁵ He died on 15 June 1959 in East Riding General Hospital, Driffield, Yorkshire, England.^6,7 He did not leave a will. Administration papers were issued on 11 September 1959 to Charles James Greathead # 8318 his nephew, a farmer at York. His effects were valued at £827 2s 4d.⁷

     Charles Cartwright Brown was born in 1876 in Bourne, Lincolnshire, England.^2,3 He married Frances Greathead, daughter of Francis Rice Greathead and Sarah Ann Bush, in December 1898 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.^1,4,2 Charles was a soldier in 1901 according to the 1901 census where his wife was described as a soldier's wife. She and their son Charles were staying with her parents in Sheffield.² Charles was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 216 Crookes Moor Road, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, Charles interestingly describes himself as Charles Arthur although I am pretty sure it is the correct man. He describes himself as a horsekeeper to a coal merchant and removal contractor living with his wife and children in their six room home.⁵

     Janet Cairns was born in 1862 in South Shields, Durham, England, It is believed her name was Janet although there is some thought it may have been called Joan during her lifetime. She is registered as Janet for her birth and death in the GRO index.^1,2 She married Joseph Henry Greathead, son of Anthoney Greathead and Margaret Pinkney, in 1895 in St Lawrence, York, Yorkshire, England, Janet was Joseph's first wife. It is believed that they may also have had a son called Ernie but I can find no trace in the GRO records.^3,4,5,6 She died in 1900 in Houghton le Spring, Durham, England.⁷ She was buried in Hillside Cemetery, Houghton le Spring, Durham, England.⁸

     Sarah Agnes Greathead was born on 17 July 1895 in Northallerton, Yorkshire, England.^2,3,4 She was the daughter of Joseph Henry Greathead and Janet Cairns. In the census of 31 March 1901 in 29 Martland St, Houghton le Spring, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of Joseph Henry Greathead.⁵ In the census of 2 April 1911 in Plumtree, Mauby, Thirsk, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as a servant for Jane Dale and her daughter. There were three other servants and a foreman in the nine roomed home. Her duties were described as a farm servant.⁶ She married Frank George L Bullen in 1921 in All Saints, Northallerton, Yorkshire, England.^7,8 Her husband Frank died on 1967 in Rotherham, Yorkshire, England.⁹ She died in 1976 in Rotherham, Yorkshire, England.¹⁰

In the census of 31 March 1901 in 29 Martland St, Houghton le Spring, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of Joseph Henry Greathead.³ In the census of 2 April 1911 in 24 Spring Gardens, Thornton, Bradford, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the niece of Herbert Ward Ann was a spinner.⁴ She died on 26 March 1963 in Leeds Road Hospital, Bradford, Yorkshire, England, her normal address was 14 Green Lane, Thornton, Bradford.^5,6 The will of Ann was proved on 17 July 1963 in Wakefield by Ernest Brook an undertaker.      Elizabeth Barlow was born about 1823 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.^2,3 She married Richard Greathead, son of Robert Greathead and Ann Haslam, on 25 December 1841 in St Mary, Parish Church, Prestwich, Manchester, Lancashire, England, Richard was a widower when he married his second wife Elizabeth. The marriage was performed after banns were read and witnessed by John Hunt who left his mark of X, and James Sheldrick. Both Richard and Elizabeth also left their mark as X and their address as Oldham.
