Edward Greathead was born in 1932 in England.1,2 He was the son of Thomas William Greathead and Olive Eileen Hutchinson.3 Thomas and Olive adopted Edward on 12 October 1949.3,2 He married Sylvia Blair in 1963 in Durham, England.4 His wife Sylvia died on 2014 in Durham, England.5 Edward died on 17 April 2020 in Hospital of North Durham, Durham, England, after managing to fight off the coronavirus for 12 days. His daughter Angela Grundy, 48, who is a service support manager at the hospital, has paid tribute to her dad who she described as her "hero" and a pillar of the community. She said: "He was my hero, he was a massive role model to myself and the whole family. He was just full of life and he was a huge character. "He was a massive family man, he told us every day that he loved us. "He idolised his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was the best role model anybody could wish for." The great-grandfather leaves behind four children; Angela, Kevin, Karen and Stephen, seven grandchildren and special friend Sylvia. Ted lived on the Village of Perkinsville in County Durham for over 40 years and was a much loved member of the community. The University Hospital of North Durham was an acute care hospital which opened in 2001, replacing the older Dryburn Hospital on the same site.6,7 His estate was probated on 13 July 2020 in Cardiff.8

Thomas William Greathead was born on 20 December 1907 in 50 Pine Street, Grange Villa, Chester le Street, Durham, England.3,1 He was the son of George William Greathead and Gertrude Alice Pull. In the census of 2 April 1911 in 94 Queen Street, Grange Villa, Chester le Street, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of George William Greathead.4 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 4 Stoney Lane, Beamish, Urpeth, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of George William Greathead.5 Thomas sailed from London on 6 December 1927 aboard SS Berrima arriving in Freemantle, Australia on 17 January 1928. He was offered a farming scholarship to go to Australia. Soon he realised there was very little money in farming and turned to mining for cold, lead, tin, copper and gold.6,7 Thomas lived in Australia for many years, returning to UK with Olive as his wife. He married Olive Eileen Hutchinson in 1931 in Mount Margaret, Western Australia, Australia, There is some confusion on the year of this marriage, some records state 1931, some 1933 and others 1934.8,9 Thomas appeared on the Australian electoral rolls for Dundas, Kalgoorlie, Western Australian as No 539 a miner living at Smart's boarding house, Norseman.10 Thomas enlisted on 20 December 1940 in Claremont, Western Australia into the Australian Army. His service number was WX8831. He gave his next of kin as his wife Olive. He was discharged on 27 April 1944 as a Private in 2/4 Machine gun battalion.11,12 It is believed that Thomas, Olive and their son Thomas returned to England shortly after he was discharged from the army in 1944. Thomas grew up in a small mining town called Leonora in Western Australia.13 Thomas and Olive adopted Edward on 12 October 1949.13,14 When his son Thomas married in 1952 he was listed as a miner.15 Thomas died on 28 November 1974 in 61 West Street, Grange Villa, Chester le Street, Durham, England, aged 66.1,16,17 Thomas did not leave a will. Administration papers were issued on 19 March 1975 in Newcastle upon Tyne. His effects were valued at £4,050.17

Olive Eileen Hutchinson was born on 16 July 1914 in Australia Olive had a twin sister called Jean.3,2 Thomas lived in Australia for many years, returning to UK with Olive as his wife. Albert Greathead was born on 23 April 1890 in 17 Victoria Street, Shildon, Durham, England.1,2,3,4,5,6,7 He was the son of Thomas Greathead and Elizabeth Wilbert. In the census of 5 April 1891 in 17 Victoria, Shildon, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Thomas Greathead.8 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 3 Hackworth Street, New Shildon, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Thomas Greathead.9 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 20 Polmaise Street, Blaydon-on-Tyne, Gateshead, Durham, England, he was listed as the boarder of Isaac Wilkinson Ellwood Albert was a grocer's assistant working for Isaac.10 Albert's father Thomas died on 30 September 1915. He received probate in Durham on 11 July 1916. He was a grocers assistant.11 Albert signed up on 20 June 1917 for the hostilities into the Navy as an aircraftsman. He was described as a grocer who was five feet seven and a quarter inches tall, his chest measured thirty six and a half inches, his hair was brown, his eyes grey and he had a fresh complexion. His service number was F31121. He left the service on 8 January 1918 having seen service on President II. He gave his sisters Ida as his next of kin. She lived at 3 Hackworth Street, New Shildon.12,13 Albert gave his address on the absent voters list as 3 Hackworth Street in Chester-le-Street Division.14 Elizabeth Greathead died on 28 December 1920. Her sons Albert, a journeyman grocer and Frederick a railway clerk received probate on 2 May 1921.11 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 2 East View, North Broomhill, Northumberland, England, he was listed as a boarder working as a journeyman grocer for Mess Broughs Ltd, Broomhill Branch. He was baording with William and Sarah Wilkinson.15 He married Jane Robertson Mason on 5 September 1926 in North Shields, Durham, England.16,5 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Albert was listed as living at 132 Trevor Terrace, Tynemouth, Durham, England, with his wife Jane. And their two sons.17 Albert died on 11 June 1959 in 132 Trevor Terrace, North Shields, Durham, England, aged 69.1,18,11,5 Albert did not leave a will. Administration papers were issued on 30 June 1959 at Newcastle upon Tyne to Jane Robertson Greathead his wife. His address was known as 132 Trevor Terrace, North Shields. His effects were valued at £1877 14s 6d.11 Albert was buried on 14 July 1959 in Newcastle Crematorium, Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham, England.5

James Henry Coryndon Greathead was born on 17 May 1926 in West Oakwood, Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham, England, his Mother came home from Egypt for the birth and was staying with friends. His birth appeared in the Times newspaper of 21 May 1926.4,1,5,3,6 He was the son of James Henry Greathead and Violet Florence Wren. James, Violet and their five month old son left Liverpool on 29 October 1926 aboard SS Leicestershire bound for Colombo, Sri Lanka, Ceylon. The left the ship at Port Said in Egypt. The Master of the Bibby Line ship was G E English and there were 123 passengers travelling.
James was in the irrigation Department of the Ministry of Public Works Mansura Egypt 2nd engineer in charge on the Aswan Dam. He returned to England to retired. Started modern chicken farm at Northam, Devon, forced out by cheap imports. He was the Secretary of the golf club near Tilford, Surrey. He was the Garrison Engineer during war building camps in SE. He also ran a nursing home in Chalfont St Peter with Molly Mott until her death. James then moved to Rochester had stamp shop and lived in a houseboat on the River Medway.3,7 James and Violet travelled with their son James aboard the ship Malwa they got on in Marseilles and off in Plymouth. They gave their address in UK as Mayfield, Westward Ho, N Devon.8 Jim spent a lot of time during his childhood pottering around garden of very large North Devon house. When he was seven years old he attended Exmore prep school.1,3 James attended Marlborough College from May 1940 until July 1944.9 Jim spent three years in Malta in the forces, he was in the Royal Army Service Corps from 1944-47 reaching the rank of Lieutenant. On 18 October 1948 he was a student and gained a certificate number 25162 taken in a Tiger Moth at the London Aero Club. He was living at 54 High Street, Rochester, Kent at the time. He was an aeronautical engineer at the De Haviland Technical School in Hatfield and was later posted to UAT Paris. Rolls Royce Aero engines at Christchurch 1957 posted to Iceland advising Iceland Air. Then in 1958 to Iran with Iranair, three years later to Turkey with Turkish Airways, finally Heathrow Airport, British Airways. He retired with his wife to Somerset.1,10 Lieutenant J H C Greathead 32 Coy RASC (MT) received a plaque in the motor cycle trial in 1947.11
He married Suzanne Carol Dupmeier on 11 June 1955 in Letchworth, Hertfordshire, England, Sue's uncle and Aunt lived in Letchworth. Met while Jim was working in Paris. Sue was on holiday with friends and had a puncture. Some of Jims friends changed the tyre and invited the girls back to the restaurant to meet all the boys.

Honeymooned in Paris - of course!!2,1,5,3,12 James died on 18 July 2012 in Somerset, England, aged 86 Jim was well known for making underhammer pistols from scratch.13,14,15 The will of James was proved on 15 October 2013 in Bristol.14

Andrew Greathead was born on 16 October 1887 in Ashton Gate, Bristol, Somerset, England.2,3,4,5 He was the son of Samuel F Greathead and Elizabeth Hyde. He was baptised on 11 November 1887 in St Francis, Ashton Gate, Bedminster, Somerset, England.6 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 29 Walton Street, Bristol, Somerset, England, he was listed as the son of Samuel F Greathead.7 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 18 Walter Street, Bristol, Somerset, England, he was listed as the son of Samuel F Greathead Andrew was a printers labourer.8
Andrew moved in his early teens to Penygraig in the Rhondda.3 Before joining the army in 1910 when he was immediately posted to India he spent time in the Welsh coal mines. Andrew was in the Welsh Regiment probably South Wales Borderers- His corrrect Army no was The Forty-First A'Foot.
At the outbeak of WW1 he was in the large contingents of the Indian Army who were transferred to France, landing on the South Coast in the Meditteranean and railed to the Western Front. In 1915, much of his force was withdrawn to fight the Turks in Mesopatania, and at war's end he returned to India where he completed his twelve year's service.
He set up three small shops when he came out of Army, all three were sadly lost during the depressions of late 20's-30's.1,3 In the census of 2 April 1911Andrew Greathead in Main Barracks, Abbassia, Cairo, Egypt, was listed as a lance corporal in 10th Battallion The Welsh Regiment.9 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 28 Thomas Street, Pengraig, Rhondda, Glamorganshire, Wales, he was listed as the brother in law of George Thomas Williams Andrew was an ex soldier.10 He married Ann Thomas in 1923 in Pontypridd, Glamorganshire, Wales.11 Andrew was declared bankrupt in the Pontypridd Court. The Times newspaper of 9 July 1927 gave his address was Penygraig Road, Penygraig, Glamorgan. He was a corn and feed merchant.12 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Andrew was listed as living at 45 Amos Hill, Rhonda, Glamorganshire, Wales, with his wife Ann. Andrew was a baker salesman living with his wife and children.13 Andrew died on 18 March 1964 in Porth Hospital, Pontypridd, Glamorganshire, Wales, aged 76 His usual address was 98 Tylacelyn Road, Penygraig, Rhondda, Glamorgan.14,15 Andrew did not leave a will. Administration papers were issued on 29 May 1964 at Llandaff to his widow Ann. His effects were valued at £1913.15
