Albert William Greathead was born on 16 March 1926 in Chester le Street, Durham, England, on his medical report to become a merchant seaman he described himself as being born in Fence Houses which is in Houghton-le-Spring.1,2 He was the son of Albert Greathead and Elizabeth Robinson. Albert was described on his Merchant Seaman records as having brown eyes, brown hair, fresh complexion and being five foot ten inches tall. He was a Junior Engineer. In 1946 when having a medical he complained of a skin condition since February 1946, it was deemed as not contagious and he was fit for further sea service.3 He married Ida Lilbourn in 1949 in Sunderland, Durham, England.4 Bill arrived in New Zealand in 1981.5 His wife Ida died on 30 January 2001 in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, aged 74.6,5 Albert died on 1 September 2005 in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, aged 79 The newspaper report of his death read: "Died unexpectedly at his home, Dunedin, New Zealand, on September 1st, 2005, in his 80th year. Now with his "darling" Ida, "together" again at last. Most loved father and father in law of Pam and Gunnar Fernqvist (Switzerland), Judy and Brian Layland (Dunedin), and Graeme and Fiona Greathead (England), loved Grandad of Anita, Sten, and Emily, beloved and very special "Grandy" of William and Tom. A service for Bill was held at the graveside, Post Chalmers Cemetery, Dunedin, New Zealand. Hope & Sons Ltd, FDANZ Griefcare."7 Albert was buried on 12 September 2005 in Dunedin Cemetery, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, His wife had been buried there on 30 January 2001. His last address was 50 Birchfield Avenue, North East Valley, Dunedin.8,9,5 Bill and Ida are buried together with a wonderful stone.10
