She was baptised on 12 May 1897 in Christ Church, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, her father was a Sergeant in the 4th Lancs.5 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 6 Norburn Road, South Manchester, Lancashire, England, she was listed as the daughter of Thomas Paul Greathead.7 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 79 Stanley Grove, Longsight, Manchester, Lancashire, England, she was listed as the daughter of Thomas Paul Greathead she was at school.8 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 79 Stanley Grove, Longsight, Manchester, Lancashire, England, she was listed as the daughter of Thomas Paul Greathead Ethel was a tracer working for Messrs Beyers, Peacock & Co Ltd.9 She married Frederick Hayes in 1927 in Manchester, Lancashire, England, the ceremony either took place in Chorlton on Medlock Register Office or the Registrar attended.10,11 Ethel's father died and she received his Probate in Manchester on 18 January 1928.12 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Ethel was listed as living at 133 Wells Green, Solihull, Warwickshire, England, with her husband Frederick.      William Harold Greathead was born on 26 February 1895 in Portsea, Hampshire, England, William was registered in the Army births for 28th Regiment.1,2 He was the son of Thomas Paul Greathead and Leah Waite. In the census of 31 March 1901 in 6 Norburn Road, South Manchester, Lancashire, England, he was listed as the son of Thomas Paul Greathead.3 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 79 Stanley Grove, Longsight, Manchester, Lancashire, England, he was listed as the son of Thomas Paul Greathead William was an apprentice moulder.4 William signed up as a driver in the regular army Royal Engineers 705123 with a number 885 on 14 March 1911 He gave his next of kin as his mother who lived at 79 Stanley Grove, Longsight in Manchester. His record stated he was 5 foot 4 inches tall with a chest measurement of 32 inches.
When war broke out he was part of the Expeditionary Force that set sail on 17 May 1915 for France. He later served in Egypt, France and Belgium and suffered injury to his left thigh and arm from a high explosive shell on 2 October 1918 spending time in Abbeville hospital in 1919.5 After the war William was awarded 1914-5 Star, British War and Victory medals. These all sadly came up for sale in ebay in April 2023. In the census of 19 June 1921 in 79 Stanley Grove, Longsight, Manchester, Lancashire, England, he was listed as the son of Thomas Paul Greathead William was a steel moulder working for Messrs Beyers, Peacock & Co Ltd but was out of work.6 He married Ethel Latham in 1923 in St Cyprian, Kirkmanshulme, Lancashire, England.7,8 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register William was listed as living at 36 Kirkham Avenue, Manchester, Lancashire, England, with his wife Ethel. With their daughter Joan. William was a brick burner.9 William died in 1956 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.10

     Leah Waite was born in 1865 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.2,3 She was the daughter of Abraham Waite and Eliza Phelps. In the census of 2 April 1871 in The Plump, East Dean, Gloucestershire, England, she was listed as the daughter of Eliza Waite.4 In the census of 3 April 1881 in 7 Grove Villas, Islington, London, England, she was listed as the cousin of William Saxty who was a Police Constable aged 27 from Tiverton, Somerset. He was living with his wife Elizabeth aged 25 from Merthyr, Carmarthean and their children Florence aged 5 from Gloucester and William aged 2 from Westminster.5 Leah was listed on the census of 5 April 1891 in St George in the East Workhouse Infirmary, St George in the East, London, England, as a sick nurse.6 She married Thomas Paul Greathead, son of John Greathead and Elizabeth Seaman, on 11 July 1892 in St Saviour's, Islington, London, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by John Pook and Agnes Seaman. He married Jane Ann Greathead, daughter of Ralph Greathead and Mary Bell, on 27 December 1883 in All Saints, Stranton, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, after a licence was taken. The ceremony was performed by M N Kearney and witnessed by J Gibson and M Bulmer. John was aged 29 bachelor and a mechanic while Jane was aged 26 and a spinster.      Enoch Greathead was born on 26 October 1876 in Dudley, Staffordshire, England.1,2,3,4,5 He was the son of John Cartwright Greathead and Hannah Nicholls. In the census of 3 April 1881 in 17 Pale Street, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England, he was listed as the son of John Cartwright Greathead.6 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 17 Pale Street, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England, he was listed as the son of John Cartwright Greathead Enoch was a telegraph wire finisher.7 He married Lilian Brock in 1901 in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England.8,9,10 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 3 Aynsley Street, Hanley, Staffordshire, England, he was listed as the cousin of James Sheward and living with this family. He was an examiner of telegraph. His brother John also resided with the family.11 Enoch was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 21 Wellesley Street, Shelton, Hanley, Staffordshire, England, Enoch was living with his wife, daughters and sister in law who was a gilder in the pottery. The was also a boarder living in the five roomed home. Enoch worked as a warehouseman in the pottery.12 Enoch was listed as head of household in the census of 19 June 1921 in 16 Garden Street, Stoke upon Trent, Staffordshire, England, Enoch was a foredman at Bullens Ltd and electrical manufaacturers. He was with his wife and daughter. A lady called Mary Annie Shaw aged 79 was in the household and listed as his mother in law.13 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Enoch was listed as living at 16 Gordon Street, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England, with his wife Lilian. With their daughter Gladys and son in law Godfrey. Enoch was an unemployed pottery warehouseman.14 His wife Lilian died on 1954 in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England.15 Enoch died on 26 January 1959 in 19 Balliol Street, Pankhill, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England, aged 82 His usual address was 16 Dominic Street, Hartshill, Stoke on Trent.16,17 The will of Enoch was proved on 10 March 1959 at Chester to Godfrey Charles Bills a plumber and decorator. His effects were valued at £2860 16s 10d.17

In the census of 5 April 1891 in 17 Pale Street, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England, she was listed as the daughter of John Cartwright Greathead.7 Phoebe was at Tudor Primary School infant on 24 June 1895 and was recorded as being there on 4 December 1899 until 15 October 1900. The family lived in 17 Pale Street.5 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 17 Pale Street, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England, she was listed as the daughter of John Cartwright Greathead.8 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 142 Dudley Road, Sedgeley, Dudley, Staffordshire, England, she was listed as the servant to William and Alice Potts with general duties. The family had a seven roomed home.9 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 17 Pale Street, Upper Gornal, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England, she was listed as the daughter of Hannah Greathead Phoebe was a domestic help for Mr Potter in Dudley Road, Sedgeley.10 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Phoebe was listed as living at 29 Deepdale Road, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England, with Benjamin Oakley who was an Insurance Agent.6 Phoebe died on 25 May 1944 in 17 Pale Street, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England, aged 56.11,12,13 Phoebe did not leave a will. Administration papers were issued on 19 July 1944 to her sister Hannah on 19 July 1944 in Llandudno. Both girls were spinsters. Her effects were valued at £544 9s 8d.12

     John Greathead was born on 30 October 1882 in Dudley, Staffordshire, England, The National Register states his year of birth was 1884 which I believe is incorrect.1,3,4,5,6 He was the son of John Cartwright Greathead and Hannah Nicholls. In the census of 5 April 1891 in 17 Pale Street, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England, he was listed as the son of John Cartwright Greathead John was a scholar.7 John attended Tudor Primary School from 20 June 1892 with a good attendance record. His address was Pale Street.5 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 3 Aynsley Street, Hanley, Staffordshire, England, he was listed as the cousin of James Sheward and living with this family. He was an fitter of telegraph. His brother Enoch also resided with the family.8
He married Alice Lucy Hill in 1908 in Wesley Methodist Church, Epworth Street, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England.9,10 John was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 67 Pycrest Street, Shelton, Hanley, Staffordshire, England, John was living with his wife, working as an electrical switch die in telegraph insulation. Alice was a fettler in the pottery factory. The lived in a four roomed home.11 John was listed as in the census of 19 June 1921 in 42 Pyenest Street, Hanley, Staffordshire, England, M1.12 A report was found inn the Reporter of 8 August 1922 saying: Refused Bail for his wife. "You are the most callous man I have ever met," said the Hanley (Eng) magistrate to a man who stubbornly refused for over half an hour to stand bail for his wife. Alice Lucy Greathead had been remanded on a charge of obtaining money "by false pretences when, the husband John Greathead, was called in and asked if he was content to be bound in the sum of £10 as surety for his wife's appearance.
Greathead: It's no use. I am not worth ten shillings!
The Clerk; You prefer her to go to Strangeways Gaol! You are the first man I have come across who refused" to stand by his wife in her time of trouble.
Eventually the .magistrate allowed a conference to take place between the husband and wife in the cells, and on the man's return to court he agreed to stand bail in £10.13 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register John was listed as living at 44 Coronation Avenue, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England, with his wife Alice. John was a porcelain die fixer and Alice was a café waitress.14 John died in 1954 in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England.15
