The estate was valued at under £600.⁵

     William Truefitt was baptised on 29 December 1833 in Hinderwell, Yorkshire, England.² He was born on 29 December 1833 in Runswick Bay, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, England.^1,3,4 He was the son of William Truefitt and Sarah ...¹ William came from a long seafaring family and at the age of 15 he obeyed the call of the sea, came to Teeside to serve as an apprentice on the sailing collier Harper, owned by Messrs Cochrane and Co. William served on this ship as a cabin boy and rose to Captain.⁴ He married Jane Foster on 16 August 1856 in St Hilda's Church, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, England.^5,4 When in the march of progress Messrs Cochrane and Co went in for steam-driven vessels, they entrusted the charge of the first to Captain Truefitt. It was the Sixty-Six and beginning its career in 1871 was one of the earliest steamers to ply from Middlesborough. For thirty-four years - in fact until his retirement in 1905, at the age of 72 he served as Captain of that vessel. At the time he gave up his seafaring life he was proud to claim a double record. He was the oldest captain on Lloyd's list, and had the longest period of service as master of one ship.

During his 58 years at sea he enjoyed a remarkable freedom from serious mishap, never shipwrecked, never stranded, never a life lost during the almost countless coastwise and Continental trips which he took as Captain, "never," to use his own words, "so much as a cap lost."⁴ William was listed as the head of the family on the census of 3 April 1881 in Kings Road, Ormesby, Yorkshire, England, William was a Master Mariner living with his wife and nine children.⁶ In the census of 31 March 1901 he was listed as a Master Mariner on board SS Sixty Six which was off Gravesend in Kent. His wife and two daughters lived back in Ormesby.⁷ In the census of 2 April 1911 in 9 Woodlands Terrace, Redcar, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the father in law of George Edward Usher William was a retired sea captain.⁸ Captain and Mrs Truefitt celebrated 65 years of marriage. Of their ten children, three sons and four daughters survived to see his celebration. They also had 25 grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.⁴ His wife Jane died on 1922 in Guisborough, Yorkshire, England.⁹ He died in 1926 in Guisborough, Yorkshire, England.¹⁰

     Mary Jane Weatherill was born about 1827 in Staithes, Yorkshire, England.² She married William Truefitt, son of Isaac Truefitt and Ann Craddock, on 12 September 1846 in Whitby, Yorkshire, England.^1,3 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Staithes, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of William Truefitt.⁴ In the census of 2 April 1871 in Castlegate, Scarborough, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of William Truefitt.⁵ In the census of 3 April 1881 in 28 South Cliff Terrace, West Street, Hilderthorpe, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of William Truefitt.⁶

     Catherine Carey was born about 1803.¹ She was the daughter of James Carey and Susanna Turmaine.¹ She married John Seales on 2 October 1832 in St Martin in the Fields, London, England.¹

     John Griffiths married Maria Frances Carey, daughter of James Carey and Susanna Turmaine, They had several children born in different places in Kent but they finally settled on the Isle of Sheppey.¹

     John Seales married Catherine Carey, daughter of James Carey and Susanna Turmaine, on 2 October 1832 in St Martin in the Fields, London, England.¹

     Samuel Seales was the son of John Seales and Catherine Carey.¹ James and his cousin Samuel were baptised together.¹

     Doris Elizabeth Greathead was born on 12 June 1914 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England.^1,2 She was the daughter of John Greathead and Alice Lucy Hill.¹ She married William Ernest Benbow in 1934 in St Mark, Shelton, Staffordshire, England.^3,4 She died in August 1991 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, aged 77.⁵
