Silas Greathead was born on 3 November 1883 in Gornal, Staffordshire, England.1,2,3,4 He was the son of Silas Greathead and Eliza Lane. Silas attended Tudor Primary School from 7 January 1889 leaving on 18 December 1896. His attendance was good. The family lived in Kent Street.4 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 100 Kent Street, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England, he was listed as the son of Silas Greathead and a scholar.5 His father died in 1891 and his mother married William Price on 27 December 1892.6 In the census of 31 March 1901 in Blenheim Barracks, Farnborough, Hampshire, England, he was listed as a Private in the Worcester Regiment. It gives his age as 19 and name as Samuel I can find no birth or any other records for Samuel so did Silas give his real name and/or real his age when he signed up - I wonder? I am pretty sure this is Silas Greathead.7 It would appear that Samuel was convicted of the larceny of three watches and was sent to Clonmel Prison on 21 January 1902 for 10 days. His height was five foot six inches tall, his hair was light brown. He had hazel eyes, a fresh complexion and weighed 151 pounds. He also had two tatoos of his fore arm, this ties in with his later army records. His age was given as 20 and his address as Spills Meadow in Staffordshire.8 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 4b Spills Meadow, Upper Gornal, Dudley, Staffordshire, England, he was listed as the son of William Blackham Price Silas was a bricklayers labourer.9 Silas signed up for three years on 2 September 1914, giving his address as Upper Gornal, Dudley, Staffordshire. He gave his age as 30 years 10 months and his trade as labourer. As Private 156463 with Worcester Regiment he was awarded the 1914-5 star and the British War and Victory medals. In September 1916 he was transferred to the Royal Engineers as a Sapper. Silas was five foot eight inches tall, with a chest measurement of 37 inches, fresh complexion, grey eyes and brown hair. He had tattoos on both fore arms.10 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 4 Spills Meadow, Upper Gornal, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England, he was listed as the son of Eliza Price Silas was a bricklayer labourer working for Brooks & Sons who were builders.11 Silas left Liverpool on 31 October 1929 aboard the steamship Bendigo. He arrived in Sydney on 2 December 1929, and Brisbane on 13 December. He gave his last address as 4b Spills Meadow Upper Gornal, Dudley, Staffordshire. The ships official number was 45603. Captain F N Wyatt was the Master. The P&O Branch Service ship was bound for Australia with 582 passengers on board. It was described as being 9421 square feet and had a registered tonnage of 7889.75. Silas was listed as being 46 years old and a bricklayer. Margaret was on the same ship giving her address as 7 Killermount Street, Glasgow. It is understood they did not know each other before the trip. Margaret was described as having home duties aged 21. They lost touch after they landed and by chance 8 months later, Silas bumped into one of Margaret’s friends and she told him where she was. They met up again and the rest is history.12,13,14,15,16 He married Margaret Hill Bilsland, daughter of Joseph Bilsland and Rosina Smillie, in 1932 in Ryde, New South Wales, Australia.17,18 Silas enlisted on 18 September 1941 into the Australian Army in Paddington, New South Wales giving his wife Margaret as his next of kin. His service number was N280472. He was discharged on 15 April 1943 as a Private from 2 Garrison Battalion.2,19 Silas died on 17 October 1972 in Liverpool, New South Wales, Australia, aged 88 Silas is described as late of Hillview.20,21
