     Ann Orton was born in 1818.1,2 She was the daughter of William Orton and Elizabeth Dodsworth. In the census of 7 June 1841 in Hutton, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the daughter of an unknown person.3 She married John Greathead, son of William Greathead and Jane Cockfield, on 7 February 1842 in SS Peter and Paul, Stainton, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, the ceremony was witnessed by Joseph Stoker and Ann Allan. John was an engine driver.4 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Thickley Place, East Thickley, Auckland, Durham, England, she was listed as the visitor of Thomas Greathead.5,6 Ann died in 1859 in Auckland, Durham, England.7

William Orton1

     William Orton was born about 1778.2 He married Elizabeth Dodsworth on 27 April 1807 in Billingham, Durham, England.3,4 He was a butcher.5 Willliam was convicted at York Castle on 10 March 1821 charged with a forgery, passing an altered bank note. He was found guilty and sentenced to life. He was placed on the prison hulk Bellerophon on 27 May 1821. He was placed on the ship Minerva on 21 July 1821 which set sail for New South Wales arriving on 26 March 1822.2,6 William was indicted for having at Black Creek on 20 April 1845 passed forged orders worth £1 each drawn on John Welsh with the intent of defrauding William Jones. The jury found him guilty, but since he seemed to have had good charector in New South Wales he was given a very light sentence, namely two years imprisonment.7 William died before 1851.3

     Thomas Webb was born about 1831 in Radstock, Somerset, England.1 He was the son of Thomas Webb. He married Mary Ann Greathead, daughter of William Greathead and Margaret Hanley, on 29 November 1852 in Parish Church of Trimdon, Trimdon, Sedgefield, Durham, England, The ceremony was performed after the banns had been read and was witnessed by Walter Beadie and John Allison, both signed with an X. Both Thomas and Mary gave their address as Trimdon Grange.2 Thomas was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1871 in Beer House, Trimdon Colliery, Sedgefield, Durham, England, Thomas was a coal miner living with his wife and children. Two of his sons Richard and John were also miners.3 Thomas was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 3 April 1881 in Haswell, Durham, England, Thomas was a publican employing one servant called Annie Able a girl born in 1864 in Shotton, Durham.4 Thomas died in 1883 in Easington, Durham, England.5

     Bertie Greathead was born on 9 May 1898 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England.3,4,5 He was the son of William Thomas Greathead and Jane Wesson. In the census of 31 March 1901 in 82 Mitchell Street, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England, he was listed as the son of William Thomas Greathead.6,7 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 7 Connaught Street, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England, he was listed as the son of William Thomas Greathead Bertie was at school.8 Bert signed up for short service on 5 June 1916. He gave his address as 167 Alfreston Road, Nottingham. he was 18 years 27 days old. He signed up in the machine gun corps and given the number 185809. His father of the same address was given as his next of kin, Bertie was working as a fitters apprentice.9 On his dispersal certiicate dated 15 September 1919, Bertie was listed as serving with No 1 (Res) Battn MGC. During is service he passed the test as a skilled fitter, inside test centre, Woowich. His religion was listed as on the congregational list. He was appointed Corporal with effect from 23 June 1919 and temporary sergeant with effect from 2 September 1919. He was five foot ten and half inches tall, weighed 178 ibs, light brown hair, fresh complexion, brown eyes and a thirty-six inch chest measurement, with a good physical development. However he is recorded as having poor teeth.9 He married Lucie Button in 1924 in Basford, Nottinghamshire, England.10 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Bertie was listed as living at 1 Claremont Road, Ealing, London, England with his wife Lucie. Bertie was a Jig and tool draughtsman and drawing checker living with his wife Lucie. He was also listed as ARP Warden no 1862 Ealing RD.5 Bertie died on 5 February 1969 in 3 Thornfields Derive, Highcliffe, Christchurch, Dorset, England, aged 70.11,12 Administration papers were issued with a will on 25 April 1969 in Winchester. His effects were valued at £940.12

She married William Louis Greathead, son of Walter Greathead and Mary Ball, in 1929 in Ruiton United Reformed Church, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England.4,5 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Violet was listed as living at 29a Gate Street, Coseley, Staffordshire, England with her husband William. And his wife's sister. William was a master boot and shoe repairer.6 Violet died on 14 February 1958 in Burton Road Hospital, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England, aged 51.7,8,9 Violet did not leave a will. Administration papers were issued on 9 July 1958 to her husband William Louis Greathead in London. He was a boot and shoe repairer. Her usual address was 28 Gate Street, Sedgeley, Staffordshire and her effects were valued at £2422 4s 3d.7

In the census of 3 April 1881 in 17 Pale Street, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England, he was listed as the son of John Cartwright Greathead.6 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 17 Pale Street, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England, he was listed as the son of John Cartwright Greathead.7 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 17 Pale Street, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England, he was listed as the son of John Cartwright Greathead Walter was a bellows maker.8 He married Mary Ball in 1903 in Ruiton United Reformed Church, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England.9,10 He was a bellows maker journeyman on 2 January 1907.
