John Greathead was born in 1721/22 in Halnaby, Croft on Tees, Yorkshire, England.1 He was the son of Thomas Greathead and Mary Frank. He was a civil servant. He married Mary Rainsden, daughter of Henry Rainsden, on 30 May 1744 in Sawyers, Fleet Prison, London, England, by Walter Wyatt. Both John and Mary were from the parish of St Andrews, Holborn. On the supposition that John may have been working in the Salt Duty office or as a secretary to Mark Milbank and the Fleet Prison is just to the East of York Buildings which is where the Headquarters of the Salt Duty was located and Sir Mark Milbank of Halnaby Hall was a Commissioner. Clandestine marriages were common at the time among people who were not resident in a parish or had something to hide. It is believed they had thirteen children but I only know of nine.1,2,3,6,7 John died on 15 December 1802.1 John was buried on 17 December 1802 in St Hilda, South Shields, Durham, England.8
