William James Greathead
     William James Greathead was born on 5 October 1923 in Paddington, New South Wales, Australia.1,2 He was the son of Robert Barnier Knight Greathead and Ruby Brien.1 William enlisted on 10 December 1941 into the Australian Army in Paddington, New South Wales. His service number was 24204 (NX77911) He faced a Court Martial on 7 September 1944 while in 3rd Australian Water Transport Group (small craft) Royal Australian Engineers, Australian Military Forces. He was discharged on 8 May 1946 as a Private in 13 Australian Small Ships Company. His father Robert was listed as his next of kin. Like so many brave young men of the time he gave a false year of birth in order to enlist early. He claimed to be two years older than he actually was.3 He married Judith Ann Kelly on 18 August 1951 in St Clements, Church of England, Marrickville, New South Wales, Australia.1,4 William died on 20 March 2016 in Australia aged 92 after a few years with emphascema and then a massive stroke. He spent his last couple of years in a nursing home. When family visited him, he was always jovial, accepting his condition, always stated he had had enough and was ready to “go”.1

     Ashbury Charles Greathead was born in 1898 in Drummoyne, New South Wales, Australia.1,2,3,4 He was the son of Robert J Greathead and Ruth Darwin Rowley.1 Ashbury was like his brother William a presser and followed the Church of England religion. He enlisted into 2nd Battalion, 6th Reinforcement, regimental number 2242 Australian unit on 26 May 1915 as Private 2242. He was described a being 18 years 6 months old. He was five feet 5¾ inches. His chest measurement was 32-34 inches. His complexion was described as medium complexion, with grey eyes and black hair. The unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT Karoola on 16 June 1915. He was wounded several times, always returning to his unit who returned to Australia on 22 February 1917. Ashbury was awarded the Star, The British War Medal and the Victory Medal.2,5,6,7 He married Olive Mary Brougham, daughter of William Brougham and Annie ..., in 1920 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.1,2,8 Ashbury and Olive appeared on the Australian electoral rolls for 1930 and 1936 at Louray, Church Street, Hunters Hill, Martin, New South Wales. Ashbury was a tailor and Olive listed as home duties. By 1936 the list stated Louray was 15 Church Street.9 Ashbury died on 20 April 1967 in Yarralla Hospital, Concord, New South Wales, Australia, of war causes.10 Ashbury was buried in Northern Suburbs Memorial Gardens and Crematorium, New South Wales, Australia.11

It happened in Manly, New South Wales. She is reported to have performed this exception feat without being tied in.3 She married Ashbury Charles Greathead, son of Robert J Greathead and Ruth Darwin Rowley, in 1920 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.1,4,5 Ashbury and Olive appeared on the Australian electoral rolls for 1930 and 1936 at Louray, Church Street, Hunters Hill, Martin, New South Wales. Ashbury was a tailor and Olive listed as home duties. By 1936 the list stated Louray was 15 Church Street.6 Her husband Ashbury died on 20 April 1967 in Yarralla Hospital, Concord, New South Wales, Australia, of war causes.7 Olive requested her husband's Gallipoli medallion on 8 July 1968 following her husband's death. She was living at 15 Church Street, Hunters Hill, New South Wales.8 Olive died on 15 June 1973 in St Leonards, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, Olive is described as late of Hunters Hill.9,10 Olive was buried in Northern Suburbs Memorial Gardens and Crematorium, New South Wales, Australia.11

     Albert Cyril Greathead was born on 7 July 1905 in Drummoyne, New South Wales, Australia.2,3,4,5 He was the son of Robert J Greathead and Ruth Darwin Rowley.1 He married Myra M Dyer in 1929 in Drummoyne, New South Wales, Australia.1,6 Albert and Myra appeared in the Australian electoral rolls in 1930 as living in 34 Seville Street, Lane Cove, North Sydney, New South Wales with Alberts parents and sister. Albert was described as a clerk and Myra as having home duties.7 Albert and Myra had moved to 53 Austin Street, Lane Cove, North Sydney, New South Wales by 1936 with Alberts parents and sister.7 Albert enlisted on 4 January 1941 in Sydney giving his wife Myra as his next of kin. He gave his date of birth as 7 July 1912! His Royal Australian Air Force service number was 403240. He was discharged as a leading aircraftman on 23 December 1941. His last posting before discharge was the embarkation depot at Bradfield Park.8,9 Albert was driving a car when he was in a collision with a utility at Northbourne Avenus and Cooyong Street, Braddon on 28 May 1954. Passengers in the utility were treated for minor injuries. Sydney lived in Arden Street, Coogee at the time.10 His wife Myra died on 10 March 1988 in Australia Myra is described as late of Coogee.1,11 Albert died on 23 June 1993 in Coogee, New South Wales, Australia, aged 87 Albert was described as late of Coogee.1,3,12 Albert was buried in Northern Suburbs Memorial Gardens and Crematorium, Coogee, New South Wales, Australia, in South West Terrace Wall 137.12

     Ethel Greathead was born on 28 May 1881 in 33 Radcliffe Street, Oldham, Lancashire, England.1,2,3 She was the daughter of Charles Greathead and Emma Ward.4 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 182 Shaw Road, Oldham, Lancashire, England, she was listed as the daughter of Charles Schofield.5 She married Evan Thomas Roberts, son of Edwin Roberts, on 16 February 1901 in Christ Church, Chadderton, Oldham, Lancashire, England, The ceremony was witnessed by Samuel Taylor and Betsy Taylor. Evan lived at 12 Oak Street and was a turner. Ethel lived at 28 Devon Street.6,2,7,8 In the census of 31 March 1901 she was listed as the wife of Evan Thomas Roberts Ethel was a reeler in the mill.9 I have a wonderful picture of Ethel an her children Charles, Ivy, Walter and baby Hilda.2 Her husband Evan died on 16 February 1951 in Boundary Park Hospital, Oldham, Lancashire, England.10 Ethel died on 1 July 1953 in 25 Studley Street, Oldham, Lancashire, England, aged 72.2,11

     Evan Thomas Roberts was born about 1876 in Holywell, Flintshire, Scotland.1 He was the son of Edwin Roberts.2 He married Ethel Greathead, daughter of Charles Greathead and Emma Ward, on 16 February 1901 in Christ Church, Chadderton, Oldham, Lancashire, England, The ceremony was witnessed by Samuel Taylor and Betsy Taylor. Evan lived at 12 Oak Street and was a turner. Ethel lived at 28 Devon Street.3,4,5,6 Evan was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 at 82 Devon Road, Oldham, Lancashire, England, Evan was an iron turner.7 He was a tool turner.2 Evan died on 16 February 1951 in Boundary Park Hospital, Oldham, Lancashire, England.8
