Joseph Greathead was baptised on 5 June 1825 in St Luke, Stickney, Lincolnshire, England, Joseph's father was a carpenter.1,2 He was the son of William Greathead and Ann Sherriff. He married Mary Ann Dunckley, daughter of Peter Dunckley, on 2 May 1853 in St Martin, Leicester, Leicestershire, England, after a licence had been issued. The ceremony was witnessed by William and Maria King. Maria signed with her mark X. Joseph gave his address as Church Gate and worked as a blacksmith. Mary Ann gave her address as Walcote. Both declared they were of full age.3 His wife Mary died on 6 December 1855 in Lutterworth, Leicestershire, England, There was an inquest held in Red Lion, Walcote on 8 December on Mary's body as she had been found dead in bed about 9 o'clock on the Tuesday morning. The Doctor calle, Dr Bond said he had previously been called out to attend Mary when she had a fit, he had no doubt she had died in a similar one and that it was occassioned by disease of the heart.4,5 He married Mary Ann Mead on 8 September 1873 in St Ebbes, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, after the banns had been read in St Ebbes on 24, 31 August and 7 September. Both Joseph and Mary were widowed and their residence at the time of marriage was 11 Wood Street, St Ebbe, Oxford. Joseph was working as a railway engineer. The ceremony was witnessed by John Garriton and Hannah Penn. Interestingly Mary, although a widow, her father was listed as William Mead.6,7,8

In the census of 30 March 1851 at Vicarage, Church Yard, Holbeach, Lincolnshire, England, she was listed as a servant working for James Morten the Vicar of Walbeach. She was employed as a house servant. This census gives her age as 27.4 She married Johann Hinrick Dohrmann on 13 June 1859 in St Matthew, Essex Road, Islington, London, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by William Curtis and Suan Newcombe. Maria signed with her mark and her age was given as 28. I believe that to be wrong. The register is completed with Johann being written as John Henry the anglicised version of his name, he signs Johann Hinrick. He was a sugar baker living at 9 New Road, St George in the East. Maria was living at 13 Rotherfield Street.5,6 In the census of 7 April 1861 in 9 New Road, St George in the East, London, England, she was listed as the wife of Johann Hinrick Dohrmann.7 I have assumed Maria died before 1866 as her husband remarried.8

He had his wife, sons Joseph and William and daughter in law Amanda living with him.16 Joseph was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 31 March 1901 in Southampton, Ontario, Canada, Joseph and Elizabeth had their grandson John aged 12 staying with them.17 His wife Elizabeth died on 4 August 1905 in Bruce County, Ontario, Canada, aged 76 from Brights disease and cerebral compression.1,18 In the census of 1 June 1911 in Saugeen, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada, he was listed as the father of William Greathead.19 Joseph died on 27 April 1912 in Southampton, Ontario, Canada, aged 85 from senility. It would appear that his son William was the informant.20
