She was, however, secured, but having informed the authorities that extreme want of food had constrained her to commit the act, her circumstances were thoroughly investigated. It was proved that the distressed Ann had a family of five small children, the father of whom, her husband, was without employment. The police officer who inquired into the case, informed the bench that the house of the starving family was completely destitute of food and clothing, and the only bedding was straw.
