Ann Whitworth was born about 1803 in Rochdale, Lancashire, England.2 She married John Greathead, son of George Greathead and Mary Taylor, on 16 February 1823 in St Chad, Rochdale, Lancashire, England, after the banns had been read, the ceremony was witnessed by Thos. Fletcher and D. Nield. Both Ann and John signed their name with a X. John was a joiner.3,1 Ann, a female of prepossessing appearance, was charged by the police with having stolen a quarter of lamb in May 1841 from the shop of Richard Whittaker, butcher in Rochdale. She was observed to commit the theft, and being persued, she unfortunately plunged into the River Roch near the bridge, to evade apprehension. She was, however, secured, but having informed the authorities that extreme want of food had constrained her to commit the act, her circumstances were thoroughly investigated. It was proved that the distressed Ann had a family of five small children, the father of whom, her husband, was without employment. The police officer who inquired into the case, informed the bench that the house of the starving family was completely destitute of food and clothing, and the only bedding was straw. The magistrates directed application to be made for parochial relief, and as no prosecutor appeared, she was discharged.4 In the census of 6 June 1841 in Toad Lane, Rochdale, Lancashire, England, she was listed as the wife of John Greathead.5 Ann was listed as head of household in the census of 30 March 1851 at 4 Penkler Court, Rochdale, Lancashire, England.6 Her husband John died on 1852 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.7,8 Ann was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 7 April 1861 in 6 Proctors Court, Rochdale, Lancashire, England, Ann stayed in the house.9 She emigrated in April 1865 from Liverpool, Lancashire, England, arriving on 17 April in New York aboard the steamer "Kangaroo". Ann travelled with her children Hannah, Sarah and Margaret.10
