The Stockton and Hartlepool Mercury on Wednesday 09 September 1863 reported a fatal omnibus accident: At twenty minutes to eight o'clock on Saturday night last, an old man, named William Greathead, was crossing Stockton High Street, between the town hall and the Shambles, when he was accidently run over by an omnibus belonging to Mr J P Skeene. He was taken up and conveyed to his residence where he had prompt medical attendance, but he had received injuries of such a severe nature, that he died the following day. The deceased was 73 years of age. An inquest was held on the body on Monday evening, at the town hall, before Mr John Settle, the Coroner. From the evidence, it appeared, that there was no blame attributable to the driver of the omnibus. no bones had been broken, but it appeared that the vehicle had passed over the lower part of his body and injured the kidney. The deceased was laid on his face when picked up, after the omnibus had gone over him. The jury returned a verdict of "accidental death". The deceased was by trade a tailor.13,14,15 He was buried on 8 September 1863 in St Thomas, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England.1
