Francis Greathead was born in 1765 in South Cowton, Yorkshire, England.1,2,3,5 He was the son of Francis Greathead and Mary Younge. He was baptised on 13 March 1765 in South Cowton, Yorkshire, England.1,3,5,6 He married Eleanor Hall, daughter of Edward Hall, on 30 May 1788 in St Mary, Marylebone Street, Marylebone, London, England, The marriage took place after a licence was issued by the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury on 29 May, both resident in the parish and of twenty one years and upwards. Eleanor was a spinster and Francis a batchelor. The ceremony was witnessed by Mary Hall and Adrian Turner.7,8,4,9,10 Francis became an Assistant Excise Officer with Rotherham 1st District Sheffield on 16 March 1797 on 29 August 1797 he had moved onto Louth 2st District in Lincoln.11 Francis became and Officer and Head of the Board on 31 October 1800.12 Francis was in Sheffield 9th Division and on 31 July 1807 he moved to Barnsley Division.13 On 6 March 1810 Francis became an Examiner in the Room of Bowen on the Head of the Board. On 17 May 1810 Francis officiated in Topsham in Exeter to cover for William Avery who was ill.14 Francis then went on to Officate in Dorking on 18 August 1810 to cover another Supervisor, John Collins who was ill and again moved to Cardiff on 29 December 1810 to Officiate for the ill Supervisor Thomas Fisher.15 Francis became Senior Examiner on 19 February 1811 in East Grinstead in Sussex.16 On 11 March 1814 Francis was moved to Dorking District as a Supervisor.17 Francis Greathead Supervisor of Dorking District Sussex Collection having on 13 April accounted for reweighing 276 Sheep Skins at a Tawer's being the whole of the depending Stock, although in Fact 266 only were produced to and reweighed by him, without acquainting the Board with the Irregularity, as by the Report of John Pratt and Robert Blenkinsop Surveying General Examiners dated is 21st April. Francis was reduced to be Officer and moved to Dudley 5th Division Wolverhampton Collection.18 Francis had been reduced to the Station of a Foot Walk Officer petitioned the Board to request he be restored to his former Station. This was rejected on 14 November 1815.19 Francis Greathead, Expectant on the Country Establlishment, having, whilst officiating in Dudley 6th Ride, Stourbridge Collection, committed many Errors and Irregularities in the Performance of his Business, from his having been imperfectly instructed as by the 7th Round Diary of William Northwood Supervisor, with the Collector's Remarks thereon Ordered that he have leave to be reinstructed. He moved to Shrewsbury as 1st Assistant on 6 July 1819.20 On 6 January 1820 he was moved to Haddon 2nd Ride Northampton Collection, but on 3 February 1820 he is listed as an Assistant awaiting a vacancy having been dropped from Haddon.21,3,22,23 He witnessed the marriage of Mary Ann Greathead and Daniel William Robinson on 21 February 1824 in St Martin, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.3,4,24,25 Francis died in 1836 in Dudley, Staffordshire, England.1,2,3,6 Francis was buried on 3 March 1836 in St Thomas, Dudley, Staffordshire, England.1,3

Francis Greathead was born in 1800 in South Cowton, Yorkshire, England.1,3,4 He was the son of Thomas Greathead and Elizabeth Medcalf. He was baptised on 9 March 1800 in South Cowton, Yorkshire, England.1,2,5 He married Jane Jackson on 19 May 1823 in St John, Stanwick, Yorkshire, England.2,3,5 His wife Jane died on before November 1826 Unsure whether Jane died or not before second marriage of Francis?1 He married Margaret Thompson on 23 November 1826 in Parish of Sockburn, Sockburn, Yorkshire, England, Frank was listed as a widower of South Cowton and Margaret a widow of Sockburn. They married by licence and the ceremony was witnessed by Luke Lingdale, Ann Greathead and John Glenton.1,2,3,5,6 Frank was an agricultural labourer. The family moved around 1831/2 to High Coniscliffe so that Frank could recover from Typhoid Fever which had stricken him for 18 weeks. The change in air seemed to have helped.3,7 Francis had a bad accident around 1837, five of his ribs were broken and it was not expected that he would recover. His son John was sent to work on his Uncle Henry's farm at Atley Hill. He stayed their nine months.8 Francis was listed as the head of the family on the census of 6 June 1841 in Coniscliffe, Durham, England, Francis was an agricultural labourer living with his wife and two sons, Francis and Thomas.9 He was described as a labourer on the marriage certificate of his son George on 23 November 1847.10 Francis was listed as head of household in the census of 30 March 1851 at Coniscliffe, Durham, England, Francis and his son were agricultural labourers.11,12 Francis died on 28 November 1858 in High Coniscliffe, Darlington, Durham, England.2,3,13,5 Francis was buried on 28 November 1858 in St Edwin, Coniscliffe, Durham, England.2

Henry Greathead was born on 20 May 1806 in South Cowton, Yorkshire, England.1,3 He was the son of Thomas Greathead and Elizabeth Medcalf. He was baptised on 26 May 1806 in South Cowton, Yorkshire, England.1,2 He married Margaret I'Anson, daughter of John I'Anson and Mary Robinson, on 31 October 1840 in St Mary, South Cowton, Yorkshire, England, Unsure whether this was Henry's first marriage because his nephew John apparently came to stay with him and his wife about 1837 for nine months. At this point it is wrtten that there was a change in the household. Had maybe Henry's first wife died?1,4,5,6 Henry was listed as the head of the family on the census of 7 June 1841 in Atley Hill, South Cowton, Yorkshire, England, Henry was a farmer living with his wife.7 In the Police Gazette of Wednesday 23 June 1847, it is reported that on 14th instant, about 2 o'clock pm, the dwelling house of Mr Henry Greathead, in the township of South Cowton, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, was broken and entered, and £2 16s 10d, and a small thick plain gold wedding ring, were stolen. It was supposedly taken by two tramps who were seen near the house, sedcriptions of them were given to the police.8 Henry was listed as head of household in the census of 30 March 1851 at Atley Hill, South Cowton, Yorkshire, England, Henry was living with his wife Margaret and farming 8.5 acres.9 Henry was listed as the head of the family on the census of 7 April 1861 in Atley Hill, South Cowton, Yorkshire, England, Henry was a farmer of 104 acres, Henrys nieces Mary and Jane Ann Nelson aged 11 and 7 were staying with them.10 Henry was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1871 in Atley Hill, South Cowton, Yorkshire, England, Henry was a farmer of 108 acres, Henrys niece Margaret Nelson aged 19 was staying with them.11 He was a farmer at Atley Hilll, he became an innkeeper after 1871 in Dalton on Tees following on from his father in law.1,12 His wife Mary died on 16 August 1878 in Mill Hill Farm, Northallerton, Yorkshire, England, Margaret arrived at Mill Hill Farm and retired for the night in her usual state of health at 12:30. One of the servants heard an unusual noise in her bedroom and upon going in found her lying on the floor. She at once informed Mr Walker and a medical man was sent for. He declared her dead. At the inquest the jury decided she had died suddenly from hemiplegin.1,13,14 Henry died on 8 December 1878 in Dalton on Tees, Yorkshire, England, aged 72 His brother in law Christopher I'Anson was the informant of his death.1,15,16 Henry was buried on 12 December 1878 in St Laurence, Hutton Bonville, Yorkshire, England.17

She was baptised on 25 March 1821 in Middleton Tyas, Yorkshire, England.3 She married Henry Greathead, son of Thomas Greathead and Elizabeth Medcalf, on 31 October 1840 in St Mary, South Cowton, Yorkshire, England, Unsure whether this was Henry's first marriage because his nephew John apparently came to stay with him and his wife about 1837 for nine months. At this point it is wrtten that there was a change in the household. Had maybe Henry's first wife died?1,4,5,6 In the census of 7 June 1841 in Atley Hill, South Cowton, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Henry Greathead.7 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Atley Hill, South Cowton, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Henry Greathead.8 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Atley Hill, South Cowton, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Henry Greathead.9 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Atley Hill, South Cowton, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Henry Greathead.10 Mary died on 16 August 1878 in Mill Hill Farm, Northallerton, Yorkshire, England, Margaret arrived at Mill Hill Farm and retired for the night in her usual state of health at 12:30. One of the servants heard an unusual noise in her bedroom and upon going in found her lying on the floor. She at once informed Mr Walker and a medical man was sent for. He declared her dead. At the inquest the jury decided she had died suddenly from hemiplegin.1,11,12 Margaret was buried in St Laurence, Hutton Bonville, Yorkshire, England.13

John I'Anson was born in 1797 in Middleton Tyas, Yorkshire, England, This family may be related to Captain John I'Anson who fought at Bosworth with Henry Tudor and settled in Hauxwell. Elizabeth I'Anson wife of Thornton Steward was 9th generation decendant of Captain John I'Anson. Elizabeth's brother Christopher I'Anson lived in Nappa Mill until he died 1802. John and Elizabeth's only son George Winn Thornton Stewart born 1774 grew up in Nappa Hall.1,2 He married Mary Robinson on 8 March 1817 in Middleton Tyas, Yorkshire, England.3 His wife Mary died on before 1851 in South Cowton, Yorkshire, England.1 John was listed as head of household in the census of 30 March 1851 at Atley Hill, South Cowton, Yorkshire, England, John was a farmer with five acres and an innkeeper.4
