     Stanley Eric Podger was born on 6 December 1918 in Islington, London, England.1 He married Joan Evelyn Greathead on 9 April 1949 in Edmonton, London, England, This was Joan's second marriage.2,3 Stanley died in 1969 in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, England.4

Chart 1 My Direct Family - Edward Greathead
     William Brian Greathead was born on 6 March 1930 in Sunderland, Durham, England.2,3 He was the son of William Greathead and Mary Ellen Goddard. William was educated in the Grammar School. He fell for Latin teacher who was seven years older and frightened her by placing pyrotechnics on her blackboard.1 William rejoined the Army nearly four years after he completed his National Service. On 27 August 1954 he was presented at Eaton Hall Officer Cadet School in Chester an award of merit, being the best cadet passing out and, as senior under officer was in charge of the parade. He had been commissioned in the Royal Army Education Corps with which he had spent his National Service.4 He was Brian became a Brigadeer in army for five years attached to Cavalry, then he worked for M&S for thirty years and was Chairman of North London NHS for thirteen years.1 William's mother died on 25 March 1965 in the Royal Infirmary, Sunderland. William received probate on 4 June 1965 in Durham. He was described as a mechandiser. His father had died a year earlier in 1964.5 He married Agnes Philip Wood Kay in 1966 in Bollington Methodist Church, Wellington Road, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England.6,1,7 Brian said that he disliked the surname of Greathead, he would have prefered to have been called Goodhead. He was in aircorps as a youngster, 6' 2" tall, fast, physical with huge confidence. He regrets not having a brother or sister, loved being a grandfather and wondered why he felt so different (he thought it was because he went to a Grammar School.)1

     Cecil Greathead was born on 29 March 1932 in Auckland, Durham, England.2,3 He was the son of Moses Greathead and Lily Longstaffe. On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Cecil Greathead was listed as living at 10 Chapel Street, Crook and Willington, Durham, England, with his parents.4 He married Marjorie Thirkell in 1957 in Durham, England.5 His wife Marjorie died on before 2017.6 Cecil died on 8 November 2017 in Crook, Durham, England, aged 85.6,7 His body was cremated at 11:00am on 17 November 2017 in Wear Valley Crematorium, Bishop Auckland, Durham, England.6 His estate was probated on 3 January 2018 in Newcastle upon Tyne.8

     Moses Greathead was born on 20 December 1889 in Bishop Auckland, Durham, England, Youngest of three boys, grandfather to Denise Oliver.2,3,1,4,5 He was the son of John Greathead and Sarah Ann W Stonebanks. In the census of 5 April 1891 in 28 Blue Row, Bishop Auckland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of John Greathead Moses was a scholar.6 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 1 Newcombs Yard, Willington, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of John Greathead Moses was a brick yard labourer.7 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 5 Wetherells Yard, Chapel Street, Willington Court, Willington, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of John Greathead Moses was a banksman coal miner.8 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 1 Hunwick Lane, Hunwick, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of John Greathead Moses was a coal mine hewer working for Strakers & Love at Brancepeth Colliery.9 He married Lily Longstaffe in 1923 in Auckland, Durham, England.10 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Moses was listed as living at 10 Chapel Street, Crook and Willington, Durham, England, with his wife Lily.      Rosa Isabel Wright was the daughter of William Wright and Rosa Stratford. She married Frederick Calder Bate, son of John Bate and Jane Osborn.1 Rosa died on 13 October 1897 in Queenstown, Cape Town, South Africa.1

     Frederick Calder Bate was Merchant and banker. He was born on 2 May 1826 in Faversham, Kent, England.2 He was the son of John Bate and Jane Osborn.2 He married Rosa Isabel Wright, daughter of William Wright and Rosa Stratford.1 Frederick Bate and James Greathead were partners in the business Greathead and Bate.1 Frederick died in 1903 in Queenstown, South Africa.2

Dr David John Greathead
     David John Greathead was born on 12 December 1931 in Kensington, London, England.1,2,3,4 He was the son of Harold Merriman Greathead and Kathleen May Collett. He was baptised on 9 February 1932 in St Philip, Kensington, London, England.1,2 David attended St Andrew’s Preparatory School from 1940 to 1945, when after the Second World War he and his mother and sister joined his father, a Chartered Civil Engineer, in England. Arriving in England he sat the entrance examination for Merchant Taylors and it is a tribute to Prep that he passed into the school with ease. At Merchant Taylors’ School, Moor Park, he was a Prefect, held office in the Cadets and Boy Scouts, and was a gold medalist Life Saver. In 1951 David's father retired and he and his wife returned with their daughter Sarah to South Africa. David stayed behind in England to complete his studies at the Royal College of Science, Imperial College, London University following his passion, Entomology. He joined the Desert Locust Survey as a research officer, serving in southern Arabia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia and south into East Africa, and whilst thus engaged was awarded a PhD London.5,6 He married Annette Helen Blankley, daughter of Hugh Arthur Swinbourne Blankley and Marjory Doris McWilliam, on 29 November 1958 in Felpham, Sussex, England.1,2,7 David died on 13 October 2006 aged 74 He was a leading entomologist and a very loving family man. He was told to leave Uganda by Amin in 1972. He was an expert on biological control of insect pests and weeds and ended up as Director of the Commonwealth Institute of Biological Control.8,9,10 There was a private cremation followed by a celebration of his life on 25 October 2006.8 The will of David was proved on 10 January 2007 in Winchester by his son Andrew and son-in-law Peter.9
