He married Mary Milburn Greathead, daughter of William Greathead and Evelyn Milburn, on 19 January 1952 in Sedgefield Parish Church, Sedgefield, Durham, England, by banns Mary was aged 25 and John a widower aged 47 by W M Dykes.
