Sydney Charles Bowbrick was born on 26 October 1918 in Shamley Green, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Charles Harry Bowbrick and Alice Rogers. He was baptised on 15 December 1918 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.2 Sydney joined the Territorial Army serving in 1/5th TA Battalion, Queen’s Royal Regiment in April 1939 signing up for four years. About a week before war was declared service reserve personnel and TA were called up and put on active service, war being declared on Sunday 3rd September 1939. He was very unhappy when he was called up as he was just beginning to get experience as an apprentice in carpentry and joinery. He was a month off his 21st birthday and was getting what was considered as good pay, £3 5shillings for a 50 hour week; in those days being paid by the hour meant no work no pay, hence no holidays.3
He married Molly McGain on 23 March 1940 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, after a licence had been issued. The ceremony was witnessed by G H McGain, A Bowbrick and K H M Scott. Sydney was a soldier, his father Charles Henry Bowbrick was a gardener. Molly's father George Henry McGain was a seaman.4,2 Sydney was part of the embarkation to France that left England on 3 April 1940. He saw active service until he was finally demobbed on 18 September 1945.3 His wife Molly died in 1973 in 1 Lords Hill Cottages, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.2,5 He married Margaret E Wooldridge in 1975 in Surrey, England.6 He died on 20 January 2015 in Shamley Green, Surrey, England, at age 96.2 His ashes were buried on 21 July 2015 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, in plot W10a.2
