About a week before war was declared service reserve personnel and TA were called up and put on active service, war being declared on Sunday 3^rd September 1939. He was very unhappy when he was called up as he was just beginning to get experience as an apprentice in carpentry and joinery. He was a month off his 21^st birthday and was getting what was considered as good pay, £3 5shillings for a 50 hour week; in those days being paid by the hour meant no work no pay, hence no holidays.³ He married Molly McGain on 23 March 1940 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, after a licence had been issued. The ceremony was witnessed by G H McGain, A Bowbrick and K H M Scott. Sydney was a soldier, his father Charles Henry Bowbrick was a gardener.
