Mark's father was Richard and worked as a tailor. Mark was a baker. Mark was a tanners labourer living with his wife and seven children with two boarders, Ernest Payne and Alfred Burden.5 He witnessed the marriage of Henry Cheal and Annie Eliza Butt on 30 March 1907 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.6 He appeared in the household as a boarder in the 1911 census in 4 Oakwood Terrace, Kingston Road, Leatherhead, Surrey, England. Staying with William and Kate Fisher and working as a gas fitters labourer.7      Mark and Ellen and their son James were listed on the relatives of their deceased son William Frederick Butt as living in 19 Lawnsmead in Wonersh in 21 March 1919.8 He married Alice Rosa Seal on 27 February 1926 in St John the Evangelist, Hildenborough, Kent, England, The wedding was described in The Kent and Sussex Courier as a pretty wedding between Alice Rosa daughter of Joseph Seal of Florence Place, Hildenborough and James Mark son of the late Mark Butt. the bride given away by her father wore a navy bklue gaberdine with a pink silk jumper and hat and carried a bouquet of orchids, cyclamens, carnations, narcissus and violets. She was attended by Mrs D Seal (bride's sister in law), and Miss Lily Boakes (friend of bride) who wore brown costumes and grey hats with button holes of violets. The bride's mother was in a grey costume and brown hat. Mr A G Butt was best man. Following the ceremony there was a reception in the Drill Hall where about 40 guests assembled. The futrue home of the new Mr and Mrs Butt will be at Shipbourne Road in Hildenborough. The newspaper report continued by listing all the many wedding presents the couple received with the names of who gave them.9,8,10 He died on 16 July 1941 in 4 Riding Place, Hildenborough, Kent, England, at age 63.11,8 He was buried on 19 July 1941 in St John the Evangelist, Hildenborough, Kent, England, in plot 244 later joined by his daughter Mary.12

     William Frederick Butt was born in 1890 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of Mark Butt and Ellen Stemp.3 He was baptised on 11 May 1890 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.4 He was the son of Mark Butt and Ellen Butt in the 1891 census in 19 Lawnsmead, Wonersh, Surrey, England.5 He was the son of Mark Butt and Ellen Butt in the 1901 census in 19 Lawnsmead, Wonersh, Surrey, England.6 He married Naomi Faulkner, daughter of Alfred Faulkner and Jane Woods, on 17 February 1911 in Register Office, Guildford, Surrey, England.7,8 He was listed as the brother in law of Harvey Thomas Brown and Florence Jane Butt in the 1911 census in 7 Oakgate Cottages, Eastwood Road, Bramley, Surrey, England. William was a tanner, he appears to have taken on Naomi's son William, this is confirmed when Naomi wrote to the authorities stating he had maintained her son proior to enlisting.9 William enlisted as Trooper 2655 into the 1st Household Battalion in Windsor on 30 November 1915. He was part of the army Reserve. He was 5 feet 9½ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 35 inches. He had a fresh complexion, blue eyes and brown hair and weighed 149 lbs. William was mobilised and posted to France on 15 January 1917.8 He died on 12 October 1917 in Passchendaele, France, during the first battle of Passchendaele.10 The Surrey Advesrtiser of 27 October 1917 reported the death of Trooper W Butt announcing his widow Mrs Butt had received a letter from Trooper Morley of the Household Brigade stating Trooper W Butt had been killed in action. William was a native of Wonersh, and a member of the Wonersh Football Club and had been employed at the Shalford Tanneries since a boy.11 William appeared on in Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.12 William also appears on the plaque in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.12

     Naomi Faulkner was born in 1886 in Shamley Green, Surrey, England.2,3 She was the daughter of Alfred Faulkner and Jane Woods. She was baptised on 7 November 1886 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, the family lived in Stroud Common and her father Alfred was a labourer.4 She was the daughter of Alfred Faulkner in the 1891 census Stroud Common, Shamley Green, Surrey, England Alfred was working as a bricklayers labourer living with his five children. His sister in law Mary Woods a domestic servant was living with them.5 She was the daughter of Alfred Faulkner and Jane Faulkner in the 1901 census in Smithbrook Cottages, Cranleigh, Surrey, England.6 She married William Frederick Butt, son of Mark Butt and Ellen Stemp, on 17 February 1911 in Register Office, Guildford, Surrey, England.1,7 She was listed as the sister in law of Harvey Thomas Brown and Florence Jane Butt in the 1911 census in 7 Oakgate Cottages, Eastwood Road, Bramley, Surrey, England. Hervey was a Joiner living with his wife and daughter in their five roomed home. Living with them is his brother and sister in law William and Naomi Butt and young William T Faulkner age 3.8 Her husband William died on 12 October 1917 in Passchendaele, France.9 Naomi received a war gratuity of £7 17s 2d on 13 February 1918 and a further £3 on 20 November 1919. She was also to receive a war pension of 26s 3d per week.10,7 She married Harry Walter Steward, son of Harry Edward Steward and Fanny Joyce, in 1920 in Hambledon, Surrey, England.11 Naomi received the British War and Victory medals won by William on 21 May 1921 while she was living with her new husband in 21 Lawnsmead in Wonersh.7 She died in 1929 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.12 She was buried on 24 September 1929 in Christ Church, Wonersh, Surrey, England, in plot G15.13

     Harvey Thomas Brown was born on 19 April 1881 in Bramley, Surrey, England.1 He married Florence Jane Butt, daughter of Mark Butt and Ellen Stemp, on 26 December 1903 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. the ceremony was witnessed by Mark Butt and Annie Eliza Butt. Harvey was a carpenter like his father also called Harvey.2,3 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in 7 Oakgate Cottages, Eastwood Road, Bramley, Surrey, England. Hervey was a Joiner living with his wife and daughter in their five roomed home. Living with them is his brother and sister in law William and Naomi Butt and young William T Faulkner age 3.4 His wife Florence died in 1964 in Surrey, England.5 He died in 1973 in Surrey, England.6
