Dick was an agricultual labourer living with his wife and children and his nephew William Hughes aged 28.5 His wife Mary died in 1891 in Hambledon, Surrey, England.6 He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Langhurst, Bramley, Surrey, England. Dick was an agricultural labourer living with his daughters.7 He died in 1891 in Run Common, Wonersh, Surrey, England, he was found on 2 September 1891 in a well of the unoccupied house. A policeman was called and with assistance got the body out and conveyed it to Railway Arms to await an inquest.8,9 He was buried on 5 September 1891 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.10 On 5 September before Mr G F Romieu an inquest was held at the Railway Arms, Run Common on the body of Dick Hughes who was discovered by Harry Hampshire aged 9 and Harry Pullen. They went to the garden to get some apples. When there they lifted the lid of the well and saw a man lying on the surface of the water. PC Tytherleigh removed the very decomposed body. William Foster a labourer living at Run Common said he last saw Dick about six weeks ago in the Railway Arms and he felt 'Poor old Dicky is going wrong'. The inquest recorded a verdict of found drowned. Apparently Dick was in the habit of going to this cottage to have his dinner. His son James Hughes identified the body saying he had last seen his father three months back. I wonder whether maybe he was depressed at having recently lost his wife.11
