She gave her address as 298 High Streeet in Cheltenham.10 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Ethel was listed as living at 36 St George's Court, Kensington, London, England.11 Ethel was a passenger in November 1940 on board SS Largos Bay under the Fremantle Quarantine from the United Kingdom, she was visiting Mrs Moulle in Clarence Queens Road in Melbourne.12 Ethel was listed on the electoral rolls at Brackenlea, Coolullah Avenue in Fawker, South Yarra in Victoria in 1943.13 She died on 2 November 1957 in Clinica Robutti, Adelasia, Alassio, Italy, at age 86 her usual address was La Vignetta, Alassio in Italy.6 Her estate was probated on 31 January 1958 in London to James Stephen OBE retired Colonel HM Army and Warren Hanwell MC retired lieutenant colonel HM Army. Her effects were valued at £965 16s 6d. It would appear that Warren was born in 1912 and is not an immediate blood relative of Ethel's husband.6

Joseph Charles Edward Hanwell was born in 1860 in Woolwich, Kent, England.1 He was the son of Joseph Hanwell and Ellen A Tait. He was in the 1861 census in 40 Maze Pond, Southwark, London, England. He was listed as the grandson of Elizabeth Tait a lodging house keeper his mother Ellen Hanwell was also in the household.2 He was listed in the 1871 census in 12 Palace Gardens, Westminster, London, England. He was staying as a visitor with his Uncle Thomas Lucas and his wife and family. Thomas Lucas was Magistrate.3 He was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in Royal Military Academy, Woolwich Arsenal, Woolwich, Kent, England. He was listed among the Gentlemen Cadet Officers.4 He married Ethel Octavia Osborne, daughter of Henry Osborne and Rebecca Scott, on 10 September 1895 in St Stephen, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, after the banns had been read on 4th, 18th and 25th August in St Mary Magdalene in Woolwich and Ethel's church of St Stephen in Cheltenham. The ceremony was witnessed by Richard Rayson Jones, Gerald Lucas Hanwell, Charlotte Osborne and G Henry Osborne. Joseph was a Captain in the Royal Artillary at Woolwich his father also a Joseph Hanwell was a Major General in the Royal Artillary. Ethel's father Henry was a landed proprietor.5,6 Major Jack Hanwell died on 30 October 1900 in Ventersburg, Orange River Colony, South Africa, while serving in the Boer War with the 39th Battery Royal Field Artillery and was mentioned in despatches for conspicuous bravery during the relief of Ladysmith.7,8 His estate was probated on 11 April 1901 in London to his widow Ethel Octavia Hanwell. His effects were valued at £350.7 Jack as he was known to his family is remembered on a plaque in St John the Baptist Church in Wonersh.8

Joseph Hanwell was born on 14 November 1832 in Gibraltar.1,2,3 He was the son of Joseph Hanwell and Juliana S ... He appeared in the 1851 census in Woolwich Arsenal, Woolwich, London, England. He was a gentleman cadet in the cadet barracks on Woolwich Common.4 He married Ellen A Tait. He appeared as a visitor in the 1871 census in 29 Oakley Street, Chelsea, London, England. He was lsted as a Captain in the Royal Artillery visiting Charles and Anne Iles.5 He died on 5 July 1873 in Belleville, Paris, France, at age 40.6

Joseph Osborne Hanwell was born in 1896 in Woolwich, London, England.1 He was the son of Joseph Charles Edward Hanwell and Ethel Octavia Osborne. He was the son of Ethel Octavia Hanwell in the 1901 census in Clodiagh, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.2 Lieutenant Joseph O Hanwell sailed with the Indian Army on board the ship Caledonia bound for Bombay leaving London on 21 November 1914.3 He married Dorothy Osborne Ryrie on 1 November 1928 in St Stephen's Church, South Kensington, London, England, after a licence was issued. The ceremony was witnessed by Ethel O Hanwell, Betty Ryrie and Ian Campbell. Joseph was a Captain stationed at St Margarets, Freshwater on the Isle of Wight. His father also a Joseph was in the Royal Artillery. Dorothy lived at 25b Elvaston Place in SW London. Her father Edwyn Alex Ryrie was a gentleman.4 He and Dorothy Osborne Hanwell were divorced. Sub Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Osborne Hanwell of the SUL Probyns Horse Regiment was awarded the Order of the British Empire for services in Italy on 13 December 1945.5 He married Viola Felicity ... He died on 3 May 1948 in Ngong, Nairobi, Kenya.6 His estate was probated on 17 January 1950 and sealed in London to his widow Viola Felicia Hanwell. His effects were valued at £456 in England.6
