Frederick Frank Hayward was born in 1890 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Sidney Hayward and Mercy Rose Porter. He was baptised on 4 March 1890 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.2 He was the son of Sidney Hayward and Mercy Rose Hayward in the 1891 census in 5 Mitchell Cottages, Blackheath, Surrey, England.3 He was the son of Mercy Rose Hayward in the 1901 census in 5 Mitchell Cottages, Blackheath, Surrey, England.4 Frank joined the Army in 1907 at Stoughton Barracks enlisting into the Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment no 9152. He was listed as having a mole and scar on shoulder blade. He was 5 foot 6½ inches tall with a chest measurement of 34 inches. His complexion was freckled, blue eyes and dark brown hair. He was sent with his Battalion for the State visit of the Emperor and Empress of Germany. In 1909 he qualified as an infantryman grade one and in January 1910, sailed on the Braemar Castle for Gibraltar, where on 9 May he was part of the guard of honour, at Government House for King George V. Between 12 and 16 October 1910 he was also part of the guard for the Portugese Royal family. Whilst on Gibraltar on 11 June 1911, Frank's Regiment Trooped the Colour, on the occasion of the Coronation of George V. On 3 January1912, 'The Queens' embarked on the SS Soudan for Bermuda. Whilst there, Frank experienced a spell in hospital, for a not uncommon soldiers complaint, and re-qualified in 1912 as an infantryman second class. He was listed as being sober man, clean, hardworking and reliable. He always did his work well and was trustworthy. Whilst in Bermuda he worked as a groom, as part of the Garrison Fire Brigade, and also worked for transport for nine months. On 21 January 1914 he embarked on the SS Somali for Durban via St Vincent, then onto Cape Town, Pretoria and Roberts Heights. On 27 April he was promoted to Lance Corporal.5 The Regiment were informed that War had been declared on 4 August and they returned to Southampton on 19 September 1914, where they disembarked and marched to Lyndhurst to join the 22nd Brigade (part of 7th Division). On 4 October the Battalion were ordered to march to Southampton where they embarked on SS Turkoman for Zeebrugge. Once there, they were located in Ypres and eventually became entrenched in and around Zonnebeke, where they assisted with improving defense works, in spite of heavy shelling and gunfire. They also sucessfully recaptured the trenches, from the enemy, at Kruiseecke in late October.5 There is some confusion on the fate of Frank. His name appears on Commonwealth Graves as dying on 7 November, although no body was ever found. However in a book belonging to Mrs Cristobel Elias Morgan, the Commanding Officers wife at Stoughton Barracks, she listed all the Queens Royal West Surrey Soldiers that became prisoners of war. Frederick Frank Hayward, Military Number 9152 was one of the names listed. It states he was held in Gottingen in Germany.5 On 7 November 1914 on a misty morning at 6:15am precisely, the battalion charged the German trenches and despite being under heavy machine gun attack, held them until being relieved by the French troops that evening. That day, sixty five men had died, sixty were wounded and nineteen were missing. Frank was reported missing, presumed dead.6,5 He is remembered on panel 11-13 and 14 of½the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres in Belgium.

Sadly Mercy, his mother was unable to attend the opening as she could not afford to go.7 He is also remembered on Blackheath War Memorial. He also appears on plaque in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England. Mercy received her son Frank's medals on 6 January 1922.8,9

He died of his wounds on 24 August 1917.
