Charles Whitehead was born in 1871 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England.1 He was the son of Francis Whitehead and Sarah Briggs. He was the son of Francis Whitehead and Sarah Whitehead in the 1881 census in 42 West End Terrace, Swinddles Lane, Bowling, Yorkshire, England.2 The Whitehead family owned a large woollen business and were the major producer of umbrella cloth. The family firm was called Briggs Brothers and Co. By 1890 they had developed a considerable business with Russian merchants and this led to the establishment of a factory in Poland to service the Russian Market.3,4 Charles went with two of his uncles to build a mill in Warsaw, then part of Russia.3 He married Eleanora Wedel The Wedel family were described as 'The Cadburys of Poland.4' He received the probate of the estate of Francis Whitehead on 3 December 1907.5 When Hitler invaded, Charles' sons enlisted: one joined the East Yorks Regiment and was killed in action in 1943; another was with the Polish Air Force at Northolt before joining Yeo-Thomas, 'The White Rabbit' as an S.O.E. Officer with the Free French 'RF' Section gaining the Military Cross and Croix-de-Guerre.6 He died on 9 September 1947 in Newcroft, Wonersh Common, Wonersh, Surrey, England, at the house of his sister Lucy suddenly. The Communists gave his widow two days to vacate her two roomed apartment in Warsaw.7 He was buried on 13 September 1947 in Wonersh and Blackheath Cemetery, Wonersh, Surrey, England, in Plot 871.8

Francis was a Partner and cashier and worseted spinner and manufacturer living with his wife and children with one servant.3 He died on 13 March 1907 in Heaton Lea, Park Drive, Bradford, Yorkshire, England, at age 65.4 His estate was probated on 3 December 1907 in Wakefield to his widow Sarah and son Charles a worsted spinner. His effects were valued at £17,908 7s 3d.4

Henry Thomas Gillen was born on 11 April 1894 in Wonersh, Surrey, England, he was the twin of Edith Ellen.1,2 He was the son of Henry Gillen and Agnes Ellen Booker. He was baptised on 1 July 1894 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, with his twin sister Ellen.3 He was the son of Henry Gillen and Agnes Ellen Gillen in the 1901 census in Binsted Street, Binsted, Hampshire, England.4 He was the son of Henry Gillen and Agnes Ellen Gillen in the 1911 census in Netham Hill, Alton, Hampshire, England. Thomas was an under carter on a farm.5 He married Elizabeth Katurah Smith on 30 March 1918 in St Mary the Virgin, Frensham, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Jennie Smith and John Hudson White. Henry was a Corporal RGA from Frensham, his father was a carter. Elizabeth lived in Kilburn and her father Thomas William a printer.6 Henry signed up on 11 April 1921 into the Queens Royal Defence Force. His complexion was fresh, his hair brown, with hazel eyes and he had a scar on his third finger on his left hand. He was 5 foot 9 inches tall and had a chest measurement of 36 inches.2 When Henry signed up into the army in 1921 he gave his home address with his wife as Furze Hill Cottage, Churt.2 Henry enlisted for 1 year on 5 July 1921 in Guildford into Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment, he was a carter. He served previously for over 6 years no 528442.7 Henry was discharged from the army on 4 April 1922.2,7 He died in 1962 in Surrey, England.8
