Edwin Arthur James

     Edwin Arthur James was born in 1889 in Blandford, Dorset, England.1 He was the son of Phillip Aine James and Fanny Sarah Williams. He was the son of Phillip Aine James and Fanny Sarah James in the 1901 census in Typings, Pickhurst, West Wickham, Kent, England.2 He was the son of Phillip Aine James and Fanny Sarah James in the 1911 census in The Lodge, Wonersh, Surrey, England.3 He married Margaret Winifred Eastham in 1915 in Guildford, Surrey, England.4 Edwin joined up on 24 May 1918 and went to France in early September.5 Edwin was reported as wounded on 23 October 1918 and after some weeks of suspense during which no further news was forthcoming, intellegence at last came that he was killed on that date. Sadly he was never to see his daughter born a few weeks later.6,5 The 7th Battalion of the Buffs report of operations for 23 October 1918 stated that the battalion had suffered 15 casualties from shell fire when in a sunken road. They continued to suffer under heavy machine gun fire directed from their right flank. Also aeroplanes had dropped four bombs on their position. They were making ground and had more resistance in the form of machine gunfire as the came up to the small village of Bousies. An English aeroplane dropped a message at 10:20 which started "Huns still in Bousies our boys on Eastern edge mopping up. Huns transport just galloped from village."7 He was buried in Forest Communal Cemetery, Forest en Cambresis, France, plot A 5. He was Private G/25836 in 7th Battalion in Buffs (East Kent) Regiment having enlisted in Guildford.6 Edwin's name appears on the plaque in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.

James Charles Mant

     James Charles Mant was born on 25 February 1887 in Worplesdon, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of Frederick Mant and Charlotte Peters. He was baptised on 20 March 1887 in Worplesdon, Surrey, England.3 He was the son of Frederick Mant and Charlotte Mant in the 1891 census in Blackheath, Surrey, England.4 He was the son of Frederick Mant and Charlotte Mant in the 1901 census in White Cottage, Blackheath, Surrey, England. James was a farm worker.5 James enlisted for 12 years into the Royal Navy on 6 August 1908. His first year in the Navy was spent on HMS Nelson.2,6 He died on 31 May 1916 at age 29 James was acting Leading Stoker K1168 in the Royal Navy and died as a direct result of enemy action on board HMS Invincible during the Battle of Jutland.

Sadly his body was not recovered for burial. The six survivors were Commander H. E. Dannreuther, Lieutenant C. S. Sandford, C.P.O. Thompson and three other ratings, most of whom had been in the control top. They were picked up by HMS Badger.2,7,8 James is remembered on Blackheath War Memorial. He also appears on the plaque in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England. James is remembered also on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.9,10

Henry Ockenden

     Henry Ockenden was born in 1879 in Wotton, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Allen Ockenden and Eliza Streeter. He was the son of Allen Ockenden and Eliza Ockenden in the 1881 census in Broodmoor, Wotton, Surrey, England.2 He was the son of Allen Ockenden and Eliza Ockenden in the 1891 census in Institute, Wotton, Surrey, England.3 He was the son of Allen Ockenden and Eliza Ockenden in the 1901 census in Wotton Lodge, Wotton, Surrey, England. Henry was a commission man.4 He appeared in the 1911 census in Stable House Little Tangley, Wonersh, Surrey, England. As a domestic chauffeur forJohn Kinnersley and Sarah Lilian Hooper who lived at Little Tangley. He was living with two other servants. Their son Lewis aged 32, a Barrister and daugher Lilian age 29 were living at Little Tangley with their parents and six servants.5 Henry sent a field postcard to C F Dendy Marshall who was living at Chinthurst Lodge in Wonersh. He stated he is quite well and had received letter 10/2015 a letter will follow at first opportunity. Henry had been employed by Mr Dendy-Marshall as his chauffeur.6,7 He died on 3 July 1916 killed in action. He was Private G/1087 in 6th Battalion in the Queens Royal West 37 Brigade 12th Division. His death was reported in the Surrey Advertiser on 21 August 1916.8,9 The Surrey Advertiser of 21 August 1916 gave the news of two more deaths of Wonersh men bringing the total to ten in the village. Private Henry Ockenden and Sapper Edward Hawkins.10 He was buried in Ovillers Military Cemetery, Somme, France, in grave V1 G7 and the plot was marked with a Cross.8 Henry appears on the plaque in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.

James Shrubb

     James Shrubb was born in 1890 in Cranleigh, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Henry Shrubb and Caroline Mercer. He was baptised on 2 March 1890 in St Nicolas, Cranleigh, Surrey, England, his father was a labourer.2 He was the son of Henry Shrubb and Caroline Shrubb in the 1891 census in Butcher House, Knowle Lane, Cranleigh, Surrey, England.3 He was the son of Henry Shrubb and Caroline Shrubb in the 1901 census in Butcher House, Knowle Lane, Cranleigh, Surrey, England.4 There is a lovely picture of James in his uniform with his mother Caroline Shrubb née Mercer.5 He appeared in the 1911 census in Hut and Llanion Barracks, Pembroke Dock, Pembrokeshire, Wales. He was a Private in the F Company 2nd Battalion Welch Regiment.6 Private James arrived in France on 13 August 1914 less than two weeks after war was declared. The Battalion had been resident at the barracks in Bordon and were to form part of the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Division and was involved in the action around Mons.7 He died on 25 September 1914 in Flanders, Belgium, killed in action.8,9,10 His body was never found he is remembered in La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, France.11 And his name also appears on the Cranleigh War Memorial along with his brother Albert Edward. James also appears in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England. His father Henry received a war gratuity of £5 13s 6d on 2 February 1915 and a further £3 on 23 June 1919.9

     Frank Sparkes was born in 1860 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of John Sparkes and Catherine Hay Copland. He was baptised on 19 June 1860 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.2 He was the son of John Sparkes and Catherine Hay Sparkes in the 1861 census in Wonersh, Surrey, England.3 He was a son of John Sparkes in the 1871 census in 13 Royal Crescent, Melcombe Regis, Dorset, England.4 When quite a young man he went to India as a civil servant, and afterwards, with his brother, took over a coffee plantation. On his return from India he farmed land owned by his father, and he continued this interest up to the time of his death.5 He was the son of John Sparkes in the 1891 census in Green Place, The Street, Wonersh, Surrey, England. Frank was a farmer.6 He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in Wonersh, Surrey, England. Frank was a farmer living with his sister and two servants: a cook and housemaid.7 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in Stentsfield, Wonersh, Surrey, England. He was a single gentleman farmer living with three servants, Elizabeth Brown a cook, Winifred Edwards a housemaid and Cecil James Balchin a gardener. Stentsfield was built in 1910 and later renamed Sparkes Place.8 He died on 25 December 1920 in Levallois, Perret, Paris, France, and had been carrying out the duties of a King’s Messenger since the war, and latterly he had been travelling between Paris and Geneva. His death was due to heart failure, following double pneumonia, from which he had also suffered some years earlier.5,9 The funeral took place in Paris on Thursday 30 December, and a memorial service was held at Wonersh Parish Church at noon on the same day, conducted by the Rev. A. L. Brown.10 His name appears on a plaque in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.5 Probate was granted in London on 24 February 1921 to Catherine Georgina Sparkes spinster, his sister. His effects were valued at £6151 4s.4d.5

     Emily Oliver was born on 4 October 1871 in Lamberhurst, Kent, England.1 She was the daughter of Jonathan Oliver.2 She married George Henry Attfield on 15 September 1894 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Arthur Atfield, Elizabeth Fuller and Louisa Atfield. Emily's father Jonathan was a publican. George's father was listed as George Weller a gardener.3,4 She was the wife of George Henry Attfield in the 1901 census in Blackheath, Surrey, England. George was a domestic gardener living with his wife and daughter.5 She was the wife of George Henry Attfield in the 1911 census in Dovers Cottages, Dovers Green, Reigate, Surrey, England. George was a domestic gardener living with his wife two daughters and nephew Herbert who was also a domestic gardener.6 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Emily was listed as living at Honey Lane, Ringwood, Hampshire, England, with her husband George. George was a gardener living with his wife who was Nurse 32579 in the Red Cross. Evelyn M N Higgs was staying with them, she was a shop assistant in a tobacconist and newspagent shop.7 She died in 1944 in Christchurch, Hampshire, England.8

James Weedon

     James Weedon was born in 1892 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Martha Weedon. He appeared in the household of James Elliott in the 1901 census in The Street, Wonersh, Surrey, England. He was boarding with James Elliott a widower.2 He appeared in the 1911 census in Chelsea Barracks, Chelsea Bridge Road, Pimlico, London, England. As a Lance Corporal in 1st Staffordshire Regiment.3 James was one of the first to go to the Front in August 1914 and was wounded on 1 November that year. He had been in the army for nearly ten years. During the next two years he was employed at the Base as a shoemaker, but returned to the fighting line in January 1916.4 He married Emily Margaret Batten, daughter of James Batten and Agnes Hardy, on 11 October 1915 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Frances Edna Trowbridge and Arthur Atkins. James was a soldier in the Expeditionary Force. He gave no father's name on the marriage certificate. Emily's father James was a deceased platelayer.5,6 He died on 26 April 1917 in France killed in action during the battle of Arleux. He was a Sergeant leading his platoon who would have followed him anywhere, serving with South Staffordshire Regiment 2nd Battalion no 8181. His family like others were given a death penny and still have it to this day.7,8 He is remembered on bay 6 of the Arras Memorial.9 He is also remembered on the Plaque in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.

     Emily Margaret Batten was born on 25 January 1894 in Hambledon, Surrey, England.1,2,3 She was the daughter of James Batten and Agnes Hardy. She was baptised on 25 March 1894 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England, her father was a labourer. Emily lived with her parents James and Agnes in Bramley.2 She witnessed the marriage of Arthur Atkins and Agnes Batten on 18 May 1907 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.4,5 She was the step daughter of Arthur Atkins and Agnes Atkins in the 1911 census in Mirror Laundry, Holly Cottage, Wonersh Common, Wonersh, Surrey, England. Annie was a laundry maid.6 She married James Weedon, son of Martha Weedon, on 11 October 1915 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Frances Edna Trowbridge and Arthur Atkins. James was a soldier in the Expeditionary Force. He gave no father's name on the marriage certificate. Arthur was a carrier from Compton and his father Henry a shepherd.5,11 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register she was listed as living at Holly Cottage, Wonersh Common, Wonersh, Surrey, England, with her son in law and husband Arthur.3 She received the probate of the estate of Agnes Atkins on 23 September 1958 to Emily Margaret Goddard in Lewes . Her estate was valued at £953 5s 8d. She bequeathed to Jean Goddard her grandaughter a silver plated teapot, cream jug, sugar basin and six Nagasaki silver spoons, a King Edward VII Coronation Goblet and a large framed photgraph of her father. The rest of her estate was left to her daughter including the freehold house house known as Holly Cottage and the goodwill of the business of laundry together with stock and utensils. Following the death of her husband she had added a codicil to her will stating the the cottage adjoining and on southside of Holly Cottage be given to her grandaughter Jean Sylvia Goddard. The property was occupied by Mr Oliver and formerly William Brown.12 She died on 26 July 1963 in Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford, Surrey, England, at age 69 her usual address was Holly Cottage, Wonersh Common, Wonersh.13,14 Her body was cremated after a service in Wonersh Congregational Church on 1 August 1963 in St Johns Crematorium, Woking, Surrey, England.12 Her estate was probated on 31 October 1963 in Lewis to Arthur Goddard her husband a Motor Mechanic. Her estate was valued at £940 15s 10d.13

     Arthur Goddard was born on 16 January 1891 in Guildford, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of Henry Goddard and Louisa J Nash. He married Emily Margaret Weedon, daughter of James Batten and Agnes Hardy, on 24 May 1926 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, after a licence had been taken out. The ceremony was witnessed by Arthur Atkins and Louisa Emily Goddard. Arthur was a carrier from Compton and his father Henry a shepherd.3,4 He appeared on the census of 29 September 1939 in the household of Arthur Atkins and Agnes Atkins in Holly Cottage, Wonersh Common, Wonersh, Surrey, England, he was a General Carrier.2 His wife Emily died on 26 July 1963 in Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford, Surrey, England.5,6 He died on 16 December 1974 in Holly Cottage, Wonersh Common, Wonersh, Surrey, England, at age 83.7 His estate was probated on 20 February 1975 in Brighton to Jean Sylvia Parsons his daughter who was the sole beneficiary. His estate was valued at £11,177.13.8

Her estate was valued at £953 5s 8d. She bequeathed to Jean Goddard her grandaughter a silver plated teapot, cream jug, sugar basin and six Nagasaki silver spoons, a King Edward VII Coronation Goblet and a large framed photgraph of her father. The rest of her estate was left to her daughter including the freehold house house known as Holly Cottage and the goodwill of the business of laundry together with stock and utensils. Following the death of her husband she had added a codicil to her will stating the the cottage adjoining and on southside of Holly Cottage be given to her grandaughter Jean Sylvia Goddard. The property was occupied by Mr Oliver and formerly William Brown.16

     Frederick Edmonds was born in 1868 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of George Edmonds and Jane Baker. He was a son of George Edmonds and Jane Edmonds in the 1871 census in Shamley Green, Surrey, England.2 Frederick enlisted on 1 May 1888 aged 18 years 10 months into the Royal Marines in Chatham. His occupation was listed as a Grocer's Assistant. He stood five foot seven inches tall, had a chest measurement of 33½ inches, a fresh complexion, grey eyes, light brown hair and a tattoed anchor on his right forearm.3 He was discharged on 24 February 1897 as ' incorrigible and worthless' seems a little hard to me!!3
