Alfred John Maxted was born in 1893 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Alfred Maxted and Rebecca Upton. He was baptised on 5 February 1893 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, his father was a labourer in the powder mills.2 He was the son of Alfred Maxted and Rebecca Maxted in the 1901 census in 3 Meadow Cottages, Chilworth, Surrey, England.3 He appeared in the 1911 census in Warley Barracks, Warley, Brentwood, Essex, England. He was with 1st Battalion The Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment.4 Alfred was a regular soldier before the war. His battalion was in South Africa when war broke out and was hastily recalled to England.5,6 He died on 23 November 1914 in 4th Northern General Hospital, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England, from his wounds, received during the Battle of Ypres. He received a gunshot wound to the sacrum that damaged his bladder and bowel. This hospital was at the Lincoln Grammar School. The hospital had 1,400 beds and during the course of the war, admissions exceeded 45,000. He was a Private, 2nd Battalion, The Queen's (Royal West SurreyRegiment), 22 Brigade, 7th Division. Army no. L/9797.7,6 He was buried in Newport Cemetery, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England, grave D 103.7,8
Alfred's name also appears on plaque in St Thomas, Chilworth, Surrey, England.
Alfred's name is also on the Shalford War Memorials.
Alfred left a will giving his money - £1 14s 11 each to his four siblings and mother this was paid on 26 August 1915. His mother got a further £5 on 22 July 1919.5

I believe this was her daughter Elizabeth.6 By 1936 Rebecca and Elizabeth were living at 189 Southway Guildford with Eustace Woolley.6 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Rebecca was listed as living at 189 Southway, Guildford, Surrey, England, living with Eustace and Bessie Woolley on her old age pension.7 She died in 1939 in Surrey, England.8

Annie stayed there until her death.5 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Emily was listed as living at 3 Gosden Cottage, Bramley, Surrey, England, three of her children.6 She married Ernest James Penny in 1943 in Surrey, England, Jim was a driver in the Royal Corps of Signals and later worked for 46 years for Godalming Corporation. Twenty of these were working outside and the remaining twenty six in the Borough Hall. Jim cycled everyday whatever the weather.7 She died on 20 April 1983 in Bramley, Surrey, England, at age 85. She was buried on 26 April 1983 in Guildford Crematorium, Godalming, Surrey, England.8
