Francis Greathead was born on 2 August 1794 in Lancashire, England.1,2,3,4 He was the son of Francis Greathead and Sarah Thornton.1 He was baptised on 3 October 1794 in St Laurence, Chorley, Lancashire, England.1,2,3 He married Isabella Walker on 10 November 1821 in Whitby, Yorkshire, England.5 Francis was listed as the head of the family on the census of 7 June 1841 in Bargate, Richmond, Yorkshire, England, Francis was listed as an Excise man living with his wife.6 Francis was Officer at Richmond Division Whitby Collection and he moved on 27 December 1841 to Yarmouth 2nd Division to replace the Officer on Norwich as he was ill. A new Yarmouth Division was set up and on 17 January 1843 and Francis moved to be an Officer in this new Division.7 His wife Isabella died on 29 August 1845 in Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, The family were in Yarmouth as his work as an Excise man had taken him there.8 He then on 30 April 1847 Francis went from Yarmouth 5th Division to Norwich 7th Division. However he became ill there, and returned to Norwich 5th Division. He was suffering from Amaurosis, loosing vision, and did not work for nearly a year. He was given a pension of £66 per annum until his death. His salary upon his retirement was £103 19s 10d per year and was 52 years old. He had served 31 years in the service. on 20 September a minute was recorded stating his pension should be paid in Durham Collection.9 Francis was listed as head of household in the census of 30 March 1851 at Newsham, Yorkshire, England, Francis is described as a widower and annuitant.10 He married Annie White in 1854 in Leyburn, Richmond, Yorkshire, England.11 Francis left a will on 27 September 1855 Francis described himself as of Richmond in the County of York, Gentleman. He bequeathed all his household furniture, plate, watches, trinkets, linen and china, and his ten shares in the Swaledale and Wensleydale joint stock banking company to his wife absolutely, so long as she remain his widow. He then bequeathed all other personal estate and property whatsoever unto John Carter of Richmond a Grocer and Thomas Ward of the same place. Gentlemen upon which he trusted. He stated that if he had no children he wanted trusts set up for his sister Sarah Hudson's two surviving children Cass and Francis.12 Francis died on 22 November 1855 in Richmond, Yorkshire, England, aged 61.13,14,15 Francis was buried in St Mary, Richmond, Yorkshire, England.16
