     George Firby Edmondson was born on 6 September 1843 in 4 Rhodes Court, Camp Field, Leeds, Yorkshire, England, his father was described as a commercial carrier.1,2,3 He was the son of William Edmondson and Jane Firby.1 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Gallowgate, Richmond, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of William Edmondson George was a scholar.4 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Gallowgate,Chippendales yard 3, Richmond, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of William Edmondson George was an apprentice painter.5 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Thornaby on Tees, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the brother of William Edmondson George was a painter.6 He married Jane Elizabeth Newton, daughter of Matthew Newton and Jane Hodgson, on 7 May 1874 in Parish Church, Thornaby on Tees, Yorkshire, England, after a licence had been issued. George was a painter, both George and Jane stated they lived in South Stockton. The ceremony was witnessed by Emily and William Newton.1,7 George was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 3 April 1881 in Rokeby Hotel, Station Road, Thornaby on Tees, Yorkshire, England, George was a licensed victualler, his father was staying with the household as was his sister in law Louisa Newton.8 The headstone is sandstone and the lower part is badly worn. Inscription reads: top: In Affectionate Remembrance of first row: JANE; second: The beloved Wife of third: WILLIAM EDMONDSON fourth: Born October 18th 1802 fifth: Died July 17th 1879 sixth: Also JANE their Daughter seventh: Born May .... .... eighth: Died January .... 1871 ninth: Also of the same tenth: WILLIAM EDMONDSON eleventh: [might begin with Roman numerals] MXII twelfth: undecipherable.9,3 George died on 20 May 1889 in Rokeby Hotel, Britannia Street, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, aged 45 from hepatitis for 14 days following gauniopia of the right lung for 114 days. Emily Colling, his sister in law informed the authorities of his death. Her address was 16 Mandiale Road, South Stockton.1,10 George was buried on 23 May 1889 in South Stockton Cemetery, Thornaby on Tees, Yorkshire, England, His death and burial details appeared in the The North-Eastern Daily Gazette (Middlesbrough, England) on Wednesday 22 May 1889.11
His estate was probated on 27 June 1889 Administration of the personal estate of George Firby Edmondson an Innkeeper granted at York to Jane Elizabeth Edmondson his widow. His effects were valued at £651 8s 3d.3

     Jane Elizabeth Newton was born on 2 July 1851 in Egglescliffe, Durham, England, her father Matthew was described as a shipwright.1,2,3 She was the daughter of Matthew Newton and Jane Hodgson.3 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Rokeby Hotel, Britannia Street, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of Matthew Newton Jane was a barmaid.4 She married George Firby Edmondson, son of William Edmondson and Jane Firby, on 7 May 1874 in Parish Church, Thornaby on Tees, Yorkshire, England, after a licence had been issued. George was a painter, both George and Jane stated they lived in South Stockton. The ceremony was witnessed by Emily and William Newton.1,5 In the census of 3 April 1881 in Rokeby Hotel, Station Road, Thornaby on Tees, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of George Firby Edmondson.6 The headstone is sandstone and the lower part is badly worn. Inscription reads: top: In Affectionate Remembrance of first row: JANE; second: The beloved Wife of third: WILLIAM EDMONDSON fourth: Born October 18th 1802 fifth: Died July 17th 1879 sixth: Also JANE their Daughter seventh: Born May .... .... eighth: Died January .... 1871 ninth: Also of the same tenth: WILLIAM EDMONDSON eleventh: [might begin with Roman numerals] MXII twelfth: undecipherable.7,3 Her husband George died on 20 May 1889 in Rokeby Hotel, Britannia Street, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, aged 45 from hepatitis for 14 days following gauniopia of the right lung for 114 days. Emily Colling, his sister in law informed the authorities of his death. Her address was 16 Mandiale Road, South Stockton.1,8 She witnessed the probate of the estate of George Firby Edmondson on 27 June 1889.3 Jane was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 5 April 1891 in Rokesby Hotel, Thornaby on Tees, Yorkshire, England, Jane was a hotel keeper with eight children living with her, her niece Minnie Dean as barmaid and two servants.9 Jane was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in 5 Cecil Street, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, Jane has seven of her children living with her.10 Jane was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 1 Georginaa Street, Thornaby on Tees, Yorkshire, England, Jane was living with two of her children, Leonard and Clarice in their four roomed home.11 Jane died on 28 December 1920 in 1 Georgiana Street, Thornaby on Tees, Yorkshire, England, aged 69.12,3 Jane was buried in South Stockton Cemetery, Thornaby on Tees, Yorkshire, England.3,13 Her estate was probated on 21 January 1921 in York to her sons Herbert George Edmondson a grocer, Arthur William Edmondson a galvaniser and Leonard Firby Edmondson a crane driver. Her effects were valued at £460.

The ceremony was witnessed by Mary Agnes Kelsey and Eva JessieBryce Kelsey. James was an engine fitter and gave his address as 23 Lindsay Street in Stockton on Tees. His father, also James Kelsey was a machinist at the itron foundry. Edith lived at 1 Georgina Street in Thornaby on Tees. Her father George Firby Edmondson was deceased but had worked as a house painter.6 Her husband James died on 1924 in Stockton on Tees, Durham, England.7 An extract in a letter written by Edith's niece Freda Robinson in 1994 states that when Edith's husband James died in 1924 she took to her bed, her three eldest children Stanley, Gordon and Jessie had to take over the household and look after their mother and the three younger children James, Eric and Herbert. She stayed in bed for years and did not get up until the day her sister Jane Elizabeth Millar Robinson was buried in 1933. When she went into Stockton to buy new clothes she found that all the fashions had changed ! She did not return to her bed !8 Edith died on 3 September 1949 in Durham, England.9
