Janet Bloor was born on 23 January 1944 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.1,2 She was the daughter of Leonard William Bloor and Priscilla Greathead.1 She married Anthony James Whitefoot in 1984 Janets niece, Carol Ann daughter of her sister Edith was her bridesmaid.1
She died on 17 December 1989 in St Giles Hospice, Whittington, Lichfield, Staffordshire, England, aged 45 from she developed some alarming symptons and was quickly diagnosed with a secondary brain cancer which was aggressive and untreatable and this very quickly spread to give her also bone cancer. Her normal address as 47 Brookside, Wilnecote, Tamworth.3,1,4 A Memorial Service was held for Janet Whitefoot on 24 March 1990 at St Editha's Church and following was written of her by John Widdas:
Tony and Janet came to Tamworth 24 years ago when they moved into Brookside Way. In the early years Janet became involved with the local Citizen's Advice Bureau. After serving for some years as a voluntary worker she became chairman for three years. She was an active founder member of the Tinkers Green Play Group and also became involved in the Girl Guide movement locally serving as Secretary for a while.
Following the death of their three month old son, Neil, Janet became a counsellor for those going through a similar experience. This led to her assistance in the formation of a branch of the Cot Death Association in Tamworth. She worked with Marriage Guidance for some time and took a particular interest, with Tony, in the Twinning Association with links Tamworth with Bad Laasphe.
For most people in Tamworth, however, it will be as the vivacious and beautiful Mayoress of Tamworth that Janet will be remembered. During that year of 1984-85 she gave Tony her total support and commitment, as indeed she did throughout their 26 years of marriage. Up until the time of her death she herself was a hard working Borough Councillor, and believed strongly that "people come before politics". As the Chairman of the Recreation Committee she opened the new Children's Play area in the Castle Grounds last July. In 1988-89 she was Chairman of the Industry and Commerce Committee. If all this were not sufficient, she also served as a Magistrate for two years.
Those who suffered from mental or physical handicap received her considerable support and assistance, as did the Opportunity Youth Club. Schools also benefitted from her experience and wise counsel. She served as a Governor of various schools and more recently at Wilnecote Junior and Stoneydelph Junior Schools.
Perhaps the most significant of all Janet's activities was one of her last, because it revealed the total reality of her care and concern. Some 90 pensioners will enjoy a holiday under the auspieces of Age Concern this year because in her illness she sorted out their hotel accommodation. We miss her greatly.1
