Edwin was in the Royal Engineers from Aldershot. His father William was a Gardener. Mary's father Richard was a shoemaker.1,2 He was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in Royal Engineers Barracks, Aldershot, Hampshire, England. Edwin was a Sergeant in the Royal Engineers, his wife and daughters were with him in the Barracks.3 He died before 1878.4

     Benjamin Brett was born on 29 January 1828 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.1 He was baptised on 14 March 1830 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, his father George was a cordwainer.2 He was the son of George Brett and Fanny Hardy. He was the son of George Brett and Fanny Brett in the 1841 census in Wonersh, Surrey, England.3 He married Eliza Woodyer on 27 April 1850 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by William Rose and Sarah Mary. Benjamin was a cordwainer like his father George. Eliza's father James was a labourer.4,5 He was listed as head of household in the 1851 census in 12 Holywell Street, Westminster, London, England. Benjamin was described as a Police Constable living with his wife. This was a little premature since did not actually join the force until the day after the census. He was obviously excited and proud.6 Benjamin joined the police service B Division on 31 March 1851, was promoted to Sergeant on 11 January 1859, reduced to Constable on 6 February 1865. He was transferred to R Division on 8 February 1867 and did duty in that Division until 14 August 1867 when he was discharged from the Metropolitan Police as being unfit for work due to being kicked on the shins by a prisoner. He then was described as aged 39, 5 feet 9 inches tall, brown hair, grey eyes, and a swarthy complexion. He was living at Rose Cottage Paul Street, Stratford
Benjamin's time in the police force appears many times in newspaper articles.1 He witnessed the marriage of George Louch and Elizabeth Brett on 28 May 1859 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.4,7 He was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in High Street, Belgrave, London, England. Benjamin was a Superintendent of labour living with his wife and daughter with three visitors.8 He was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in 91 High Street, St George Hanover Square, London, England. Benjamin was a visitor on the School Board living with his wife and daughter Emily.9 His wife Eliza died in 1881 in St George Hanover Square, London, England.10 He married Susan Marshall on 18 September 1881 in St Andrew, Holborn, London, England, after a licence had been taken out. Benjamin was a widower from St Andrews Holborn, Susan was a spinster from Romford. The wedding ceremony was witnessed by George John Sneath and Thomas Challenger. Benjamin was described as a school board visitor living in 105 High Holborn and his father a cordwainer was dead. Susan was from Colyer Row in Romford and her father Robert William Marshall a soldier was also deceased.
Benjamins career as a school board visiting officer is reported several times in articles in the newspapers.11,12 He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in 35 Moreton Terrace, St George Hanover Square, London, England. Benjamin was a visitor on the London School board living with his wife and son Benjamin.13 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in 35 Moreton Terrace, St George Hanover Square, London, England. Benjamin was a Police Pensioner living with his wife and their six year old grandchild, Benjamin William Norton Brett.14 His wife Susan died in 1912 in St George Hanover Square, London, England.15 He died in 1918 in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, England.16
