William was living with his mother and her new husband who does not appear to be his father.4 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register she was listed as living at 66 Kings Road, Godalming, Surrey, England, with his brother in law Albert. William was a bricklayer.5 He died in 1968 in Surrey, England.6

     Harry Walter Steward was born on 29 June 1889 in Godalming, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of Harry Edward Steward and Fanny Joyce.3 He was baptised on 11 August 1889 in St Peter and St Paul, Godalming, Surrey, England.2 He was the son of Harry Edward Steward and Fanny Steward in the 1891 census in Willinghurst Farm, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.4 He was the son of Harry Edward Steward and Fanny Steward in the 1901 census in Franklins, Wonersh, Surrey, England.5 He appeared in the 1911 census Private Harry was with the 11th Hussars in Lydd Camp training at Lydd.6 The regiment was part of the Meerut Cavalry Brigade moved from Meerut in India to France, arriving n Marseilles in 1914. The Meerut Brigade served in the 2nd Indian Cavalry Division where for the next two years the regiment saw action in the Western Front in France and Flanders. The regiment fought both in the trenches and in their mounted role. In 1916 the brigade moved to Mesopotamia where together with the 13th and 14th Lancers it formed part of the 7th Indian Cavalry Brigade.. They captured Bagdad in 1917.7 Captain H A Steward was made Staff Lieutenant 1st Class in 1916, his duties took him to France.8 Siblings Frederick, Frank, Harry and Archibald lived in 1919 in The Green, Wonersh, Surrey, England.9 He married Naomi Butt, daughter of Alfred Faulkner and Jane Woods, in 1920 in Hambledon, Surrey, England.10 His wife Naomi died in 1929 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.11 In 1938 Harry was living in Wood View, Red House Lane, Elstead, Surrey, England.9 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Harry was listed as living at Cambridge Cottage, Woodview, Elstead, Surrey, England, Harry was working as a general brickwork labourer staying with Grace Prillman.12 He married Edith A Bundy in 1942 in Surrey, England.13 Harry and Edith moved in 1945 in in 10 Bullers Road, Weybourne, Farnham, Surrey, England.9 In 1951 they were in in Flat 2 Ward Hill, Rowledge, Farnham, Surrey, England.9 By 1954 they were living in 73 Roman Way, Farnham, Surrey, England.9 He died in 1970 in Surrey, England.14

Frederick was a carter on the farm.5 He died in 1966 in Surrey, England.6

     Charles Ernest Faulkner was born on 13 January 1908 in Grafham, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of Alfred Faulkner and Jane Woods.3 He was baptised on 5 July 1908 in St Andrew, Grafham, Surrey, England, the family lived in Grafham and his father was a farmer.4 He was the son of Alfred Faulkner and Jane Faulkner in the 1911 census in Manor Farm, Smithbrook, Surrey, England.5 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Charles Ernest Faulkner was listed as living at Chama, 20 New Road, Wonersh, Surrey, England, with his mother Charles was a general labourer.6 Charles and Margaret spent their married life living in Chama, 20 New Road in Wonersh. Initially with Charles mother Jane.7 He married Margaret Tangney in 1943 in Paddington, London, England.8 His wife Margaret died in 1976 in Surrey, England.9 William and Sheila lived in Chama, 20 New Road, her father lived with them until his death in 1993.7 He died on 24 November 1993 in Surrey, England, at age 85.10,11 He was buried on 1 December 1993 in Wonersh and Blackheath Cemetery, Wonersh, Surrey, England, in plot 584.11

     Richard Salter Wallis was born on 4 June 1834 in Folkestone, Kent, England.1 He was the son of Richard Wallis and Mary Vidion.2 He was baptised on 9 November 1834 in Folkestone, Kent, England.3 He was the son of Richard Wallis and Mary Wallis in the 1841 census in Rendevous Street, Folkestone, Kent, England.4 He appeared in the 1851 census and listed as a servant in 47½ West Street, Gravesend, Kent, England. He was listed as an errand boy living with Thomas a Victualler and Mary Loft. His sister Elizabeth was also a servant but listed as Mary.5 Richard joined Scotland Yard in 17 September 1855 "A" division for the whole of his service. He is described as being five foot eleven inches tall, brown hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion. He was promoted to Sergeant in April 1857.6 He married Mary Holden on 27 August 1859 in St Margaret, Westminster, London, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by James Jenner and E H Bennett, Richard and Mary gave their address as 24 Great College Street. Mary's father George was a miller.7 He was listed as head of household in the 1861 census in 20 Cowley Street, Westminster, London, England. Richard was living with his wife and sister Annie and working as a detective policeman.8 His wife Mary died in May 1862 in Spilsby, Lincolnshire, England.2,9 He married Sarah Jane Andrews, daughter of Samuel Andrews, on 17 December 1864 in St Mary, Lambeth, London, England, The banns were read on 27 November, 4 and 11 December 1864. Richard was a widower and Sarah a spinster. The ceremony was witnessed by Mary Ann Keatley and Samuel Andrews.2,10 Richard was with the Metropolitan Police with a warrant number 34030. He was promoted to Inspector on 25 March 1867.9 He was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in 47 Kennington Lane, Lambeth, London, England. Richard was living with his wife and son. he was an Inspector of Police.11 Richard was promoted to Chief Inspector in January 1878 and retired after 48 years in the force.9 He was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in 4 Rokely Crescent, Greenwich, London, England. Richard was now Chief Inspector of Police living with his wife and two children. His widowed father in law was living with them, he was formerly a publican.12 He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Alleyne Cottage, Shamley Green, Surrey, England. Richard was a retired Police Constable living with his wife, daughter and school mistress boarder Elizabeth Neale. Alleyne Cottage was later known as Corner Cottage and even later Orchard Gap. Many clergymen lived in Alleyne Cottage until the the now known as Old Vicarage was built. Almost next door in the Police house is William J Tytherleigh a police constable.13 He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in Alleyne Cottage, Shamley Green, Surrey, England. Richard a retired police officer was living with his wife and daughter.14 He died on 7 October 1903 in Shamley Green, Surrey, England, at age 69 from cirrhosis of the liver and asthenia.15,16,17 He was buried on 10 October 1903 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, in plot B38. The Register has written in the column by his burial record 'Retired Inspector of Metropolitan Police Division A.18' His estate was probated on 29 October 1903 in London to his wife. His estate was valued at £167 4s 0d.16

Richard and Constance had lost two of their six children.9 In 1917 when they heard of their son Alleyne's death at Ypres their address was Havelock Road, Bognor, Sussex.10 He died in 1942 in Surrey, England, although he was declared dead on his son Franks marriage certificate in 1918.11

Frank was a showroom assistant in the gas works.5 He married Doris Marion Dibden on 5 February 1918 in St Barnabas, Gillingham, Kent, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Edward Holland Webb and Edna Annie Dibden. Frank was a cadet.2,6 He died on 27 June 1970 in Star and Garter Home, Richmond upon Thames, Surrey, England, at age 75 from Parkinsons disease. He was admitted on 24 June 1968.      Alleyne Westaby Wallis was born on 25 April 1896 in Paddington, London, England.2,3 He was the son of Richard Samuel Wallis and Constance Catherine Claridge.1 He was the son of Richard Samuel Wallis and Constance Catherine Wallis in the 1901 census in 39 Portland Place, Marylebone, London, England.4 Alleyen was admitted on 16 September 1901 in St Marylebone Primary School, Westminster, London, England, his address was given as Tottenham Court Road Police Station.3 He was the son of Richard Samuel Wallis and Constance Catherine Wallis in the 1911 census in 42 High Street, Brentford, London, England. Alleyne was a motor engineers fitter.5 He died on 7 June 1917 in Ypres, Belgium, at age 21 Second Lieutenant Alleyne was in 10th Battalion London Regiment and killed in action. He is commemorated on Panels 52 to 54 of Menin Gate.6
