Meynell Osborne Hanwell was born on 19 April 1900 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.1,2 He was the son of Joseph Charles Edward Hanwell and Ethel Octavia Osborne. He was the son of Ethel Octavia Hanwell in the 1901 census in Clodiagh, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.3 Meynell enrolled as a midshipman into the Royal Navy on 1 January 1916.2 Midshipman Meynell Osborne Hanwell died on 31 May 1916 at age 16 killed in action at the Battle of Jutland while on board HMS Defence.4 He is remembered on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.4
