Charles Christopher Pyke was born on 16 November 1868 in Richmond upon Thames, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of Thomas Pyke and Hepzibah Savage. He was baptised on 22 May 1870 in St Mary Magdelene, Richmond upon Thames, Surrey, England.2 He was the son of Thomas Pyke and Hepzibah Pyke in the 1861 census in Richmond upon Thames, Surrey, England.3 He was the son of Thomas Pyke and Hepzibah Pyke in the 1881 census in 2 Houblon Road, Richmond upon Thames, Surrey, England.4 He was listed in the household of George Brett and Hannah Brett in the 1891 census as a visitor in Shoemaker's shop, The Street, Wonersh, Surrey, England. He was a Police Constable.5 He married Sarah Kimber, daughter of William Kimber and Sarah Keen, on 4 July 1894 in St John the Evangelist with Rushmoor, Churt, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Kate Kimber and Andrew Karn. Charles was a Police Constable, his father Thomas was a furniture dealer. Sarah's father William was a carpenter. Charles gave his address as Ewhurst and Sarah gave hers as Churt.6,7 He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in Lane End, Hambledon, Surrey, England. Charles was a Police Constable living with his wife and children and sister in law Kate.8 There is a story that Charles was an Inspector in the Police, based, initially in and around Tongham and then, when promoted, to Chertsey. One day he went up to London to arrest a man for a burglary carried out in Chertsey. They travelled back to Chertsey by train and the man asked Pyke, as a favour, not to have him in handcuffs on the train. He agreed and, when they arrived back at Chertsey, the man gave him a gold signet ring as a "thank you"! This suggests a quality of humanity about Pyke but also, maybe, some naivety. The ring was passed down to through the family, and later worn as a wedding ring.9 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in 72 Eastwood Road, Chertsey, Surrey, England. Charles was a Police Inspector living with his wife and family.10 His wife Sarah died on 28 July 1939 in 35 Anniston Road, East Molesey, Surrey, England.9,11 He died on 21 February 1946 in Botleys Park, War Hospital, Chertsey, Surrey, England, at age 77.12,13 His estate was probated on 10 April 1946 and administration papers issued to his son Leonard in London. His estate was valued at £58 10s 8d.13
