In the census of 31 March 1901 in 20 Albury Terrace, Sunderland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Greathead.4 Ernest enlisted on 5 February 1917 giving his address as 24 Spelter Works Road, Sunderland and his occupation as a paper maker. He was age 20 years 9 months, five foot eight inches tall with a chest measurement of 37 inches and gave his mother Elizabeth Macy Greathead of the same address as his next of kin. Private Ernest was in No 2 Corps Troops M T Company and worked as a lorry driver.5 He married Frances Ellen Thompson in 1923 in Sunderland, Durham, England.6,7 He died in 1967 in Sunderland, Durham, England.8
