     Arthur Cyril Greathead was born on 20 April 1905 in Back 38 Clifford Street, Aston Manor, Warwickshire, England.2,3 He was the son of Daniel Saunders Greathead and Alice Williams. He was baptised on 14 May 1905 in St Stephen, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, the family lived in back 38 Clifford Street and his father was a jeweller.4 In the census of 2 April 1911 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, he was listed as the son of Daniel Saunders Greathead Arthur was at school.5 There is a lovely picture of Alice and Daniel and three children. Arthur, Ivy and baby Walter, sadly baby Daniel had died in infancy. Presumably taken around 1912.6 He married Carrie Edith Courtney in 1928 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.7 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Arthur was listed as living at 60 Earlsmead Road, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, with his wife Carrie. And their son Colin. Arthur was a Progress Clerk engineer.3 Alice and three of her children, Doris, Arthur and Ivy, were together for this photograph taken in December 1963.6 Arthur died in 1973 in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England.8

William gave his age as 28 and his address as seagoing donkey engineer living at 18 Bedford Street Sunderland. Elizabeth was 23 and living at 23 William Street, Sunderland and signed the register with an X.2,5 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 15 Albany Terrace, Ryhope, Sunderland, Durham, England, she was listed as the wife of William Greathead.6 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 20 Albury Terrace, Sunderland, Durham, England, she was listed as the wife of William Greathead.7 Her husband William died on 1909 in Sunderland, Durham, England.2,8 Elizabeth was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 24 Spelter Works Road, New Hendon, Sunderland, Durham, England, Elizabeth was living with her children in a four roomed home.9 Elizabeth was listed as head of household in the census of 19 June 1921 in 24 Spelter Works Road, Sunderland, Durham, England, Elizabeth was living with five of her children.10 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Elizabeth was listed as living at 3 Lashmere Road, Sunderland, Durham, England, and three of her children, all paper sorters in a paper mill.11 Elizabeth died in 1951 in Sunderland, Durham, England.12

In the census of 31 March 1901 in 20 Albury Terrace, Sunderland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Greathead.5 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 24 Spelter Works Road, New Hendon, Sunderland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Elizabeth Mary Greathead he was an apprentice paper maker.6 Ernest enlisted on 5 February 1917 giving his address as 24 Spelter Works Road, Sunderland and his occupation as a paper maker. He was age 20 years 9 months, five foot eight inches tall with a chest measurement of 37 inches and gave his mother Elizabeth Macy Greathead of the same address as his next of kin. Private Ernest was in No 2 Corps Troops M T Company and worked as a lorry driver.7 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 24 Spelter Works Road, Sunderland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Elizabeth Mary Greathead Elizabeth was living with five of her children.8 He was a papermill worker. He married Frances Ellen Thompson in 1923 in Sunderland, Durham, England.9,10 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Ernest was listed as living at 17 Askrigg Avenue, Sunderland, Durham, England, with his wife Frances. Ernest was a Goods food lorry driver and an ARP Service Ambulance Driver.11 Ernest died in 1967 in Sunderland, Durham, England.12
