     Arthur Cyril Greathead was born on 20 April 1905 in Back 38 Clifford Street, Aston Manor, Warwickshire, England.2 He was the son of Daniel Saunders Greathead and Alice Williams. In the census of 2 April 1911 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, he was listed as the son of Daniel Saunders Greathead Arthur was at school.3 There is a lovely picture of Alice and Daniel and three children. Arthur, Ivy and baby Walter, sadly baby Daniel had died in infancy. Presumably taken around 1912.4 He married Carrie Edith Courtney in 1928 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.5 Alice and three of her children, Doris, Arthur and Ivy, were together for this photograph taken in December 1963.4 He died in 1973 in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England.6

In the census of 31 March 1901 in 20 Albury Terrace, Sunderland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Greathead.4 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 24 Spelter wks Road, New Hendon, Sunderland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Elizabeth Mary Greathead he was an apprentice paper maker.5 Ernest enlisted on 5 February 1917 giving his address as 24 Spelter Works Road, Sunderland and his occupation as a paper maker. He was age 20 years 9 months, five foot eight inches tall with a chest measurement of 37 inches and gave his mother Elizabeth Macy Greathead of the same address as his next of kin. Private Ernest was in No 2 Corps Troops M T Company and worked as a lorry driver.6 He was a papermill worker. He married Frances Ellen Thompson in 1923 in Sunderland, Durham, England.7,8 He died in 1967 in Sunderland, Durham, England.9
