     John Henry Greathead was born in 1886 in Ryhope, Sunderland, Durham, England.1,2 He was the son of Henry Greathead and Georgina Gertrude Sutherland. In the census of 5 April 1891 in 2 Sea View Street, Ryhope, Sunderland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Henry Greathead John was a scholar.3,4 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 19 Stockton Terrace, Grangetown, Sunderland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Georgina Gertrude Greathead John was a labourer at the gas works.5,4 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 19 Stockton Terrace, Grangetown, Sunderland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Georgina Gertrude Greathead John was a clerk in the gas works. Sunderland Gas Light Company began in 1824 at the works Russell Street, Low St. The company was taken over by the Sunderland Subscription Gas Light Company in 1831. They established works at Hind St. In 1845 Sunderland Corporation Gas Company was incorporated and ran in opposition to the Sunderland Subscription Gas Light Company. Ayres Quay works was erected in 1847. In 1854 the Corporation Gas Co. absorbed the Subscription G.L.C. and was renamed the Sunderland Gas Co. in 1857. Due to an increase in demand for gas, the company expanded and purchased the Hendon site in 1860 and built a new gasworks. The works was extended in 1877 enabling them to to double their gas making capacity. The old works were shut down and entirely re-constructed, with the exception of 2 gas holders, in 1908. The works were brought into use in 1909. On 1 May 1949 the Sunderland Gas Company ceased to exist and the property, rights, obligation and liabilities were vested in the Northern Gas Board. At the time the Hendon gasworks was the main gas producing station of the Sunderland division of the NGB and included the districts of Durham, Houghton-Le-Spring, Chester-Le-Street, Consett & Stanley. On nationalisation the undertaking vested in the NGB.6,7,8 He married Honor Naggs, daughter of George Naggs and Isabella Watson, in 1912 in Sunderland, Durham, England.9 He married Elsie Florence West in 1931 in Sunderland, Durham, England.10 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register John was listed as living at 24 Woodstock Avenue, Sunderland, Durham, England, with his wife Honor. And their children John and Greta. John was a Clerk Timekeeper in the Gas works and a Special Constable.11 His wife Elsie died on 13 April 1951 in General Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham, England, Her usual address was 24 Woodstock Avenue, Sunderland.12,13 John received administration on 27 June 1951 on his wife's estate. He was a gas works clerk.13 He died on 28 February 1954 in General Hospital, Hexham, Northumberland, England, His usual address was South Tyne Terrace, Wark-on-Tyne, Northumberland.13,14 The will of John was proved on 25 May 1954 to his son John Henry Greathead a male nurse and John George Burrell a gas board clerk in Durham. His effects were valued at £2462 7s 10d.13

     Honor Naggs was born on 22 September 1887 in Sunderland, Durham, England.2,3 She was the daughter of George Naggs and Isabella Watson. In the census of 31 March 1901 in 6 Nicholson Street, Ryhope, Sunderland, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of George Naggs.4 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 4 Royle Street, Sunderland, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of Isabella Naggs Honor was a paper finisher.5 She married John Henry Greathead, son of Henry Greathead and Georgina Gertrude Sutherland, in 1912 in Sunderland, Durham, England.6 The will of Isabella was proved by Honor Naggs her daughter on 28 May 1919 the estate was valued at £383 4s0d.7 Honor died on 8 August 1928 in Sunderland, Durham, England, aged 40.8,3 Honor was buried in Sunderland Cemetery, Ryhope Road, Grangetown, Sunderland, Durham, England, known as Grangetown Cemetery.3,9 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Honor was listed as living at 24 Woodstock Avenue, Sunderland, Durham, England, with her husband John. And their children John and Greta. John was a Clerk Timekeeper in the Gas works and a Special Constable.10

     George Naggs was born in 1860 in Ryhope, Sunderland, Durham, England.2,3 He married Isabella Watson in 1885 in Sunderland, Durham, England.4 George was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in 6 Nicholson Street, Ryhope, Sunderland, Durham, England, George was a stationery engine driver living with his wife and family.5 George died on 30 January 1902 in 6 Nicholson Street, Ryhope, Durham, England.6,7 The will of George was proved on 11 April 1902 in Durham to his wife Isabella. He was listed as a colliery, engineman and his estate was valued at £383 4s5d.6

     Isabella Watson was born about 1862 in West Kington, Durham, England.1 She married George Naggs in 1885 in Sunderland, Durham, England.2 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 6 Nicholson Street, Ryhope, Sunderland, Durham, England, she was listed as the wife of George Naggs.3 Her husband George died on 30 January 1902 in 6 Nicholson Street, Ryhope, Durham, England.4,5 The will of George was proved by Isabella Watson his widow on 11 April 1902 in Durham, the estate was valued at £383 4s 5d.4 Isabella was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 4 Royle Street, Sunderland, Durham, England, Isabella was a widow living in four rooms with her seven children a further child had died before 1911.6 Isabella died on 11 May 1919 in 4 Royle Street, Grangetown, Durham, England.7,4 The will of Isabella was proved on 28 May 1919 in Durham to Margaret Watson Naggs, a spinster and Honor Greathead wife of John Henry. Her estate was valued at £383 4s0d.4

She married John Henry Greathead, son of Henry Greathead and Georgina Gertrude Sutherland, in 1931 in Sunderland, Durham, England.1 She died on 13 April 1951 in General Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham, England, Her usual address was 24 Woodstock Avenue, Sunderland.2,3 Elsie did not leave a will. Administration papers were issued on 27 June 1951 in Durham to her husband John who was a gas works clerk. Her effects were valued at £49 12s 6d.3

     Joseph Hall married Norma Robson, daughter of Shafto Robson and Myra Lilly Moore, in 1942 This was Norma's first marriage and took place just a few months before her sister Dorothy was tragically killed.3 Joseph and Norma were divorced in 1950.2 He married Doreen Filby about 1952 in Hartlepool, Durham, England.2 Joseph died in 1976.2

     Frances Ellen Thompson was born on 12 October 1897 in Easington, Durham, England.2,3,4 She married Ernest Greathead, son of William Greathead and Elizabeth Mary Parker, in 1923 in Sunderland, Durham, England.1,5 This young lady was an orphan and classed by some as a lesser being !!!! Ernie and William fell out over her.1 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Frances was listed as living at 17 Askrigg Avenue, Sunderland, Durham, England, with her husband Ernest. Ernest was a Goods food lorry driver and an ARP Service Ambulance Driver.6 Her husband Ernest died on 1967 in Sunderland, Durham, England.7 Frances died on 31 July 1992 in Rowlandson House, Rowlandson Terrace, Sunderland, Durham, England, aged 94.8,9 The will of Frances was proved on 3 September 1992 in Newcastle. Her effects were valued at not exceeding £125000.9
