John Henry Greathead was born in 1886 in Ryhope, Sunderland, Durham, England.1,2 He was the son of Henry Greathead and Georgina Gertrude Sutherland. In the census of 5 April 1891 in 2 Sea View Street, Ryhope, Sunderland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Henry Greathead John was a scholar.3,4 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 19 Stockton Terrace, Grangetown, Sunderland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Georgina Gertrude Greathead John was a labourer at the gas works.5,4 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 19 Stockton Terrace, Grangetown, Sunderland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Georgina Gertrude Greathead John was a clerk in the gas works. Sunderland Gas Light Company began in 1824 at the works Russell Street, Low St. The company was taken over by the Sunderland Subscription Gas Light Company in 1831. They established works at Hind St. In 1845 Sunderland Corporation Gas Company was incorporated and ran in opposition to the Sunderland Subscription Gas Light Company. Ayres Quay works was erected in 1847. In 1854 the Corporation Gas Co. absorbed the Subscription G.L.C. and was renamed the Sunderland Gas Co. in 1857. Due to an increase in demand for gas, the company expanded and purchased the Hendon site in 1860 and built a new gasworks. The works was extended in 1877 enabling them to to double their gas making capacity. The old works were shut down and entirely re-constructed, with the exception of 2 gas holders, in 1908. The works were brought into use in 1909. On 1 May 1949 the Sunderland Gas Company ceased to exist and the property, rights, obligation and liabilities were vested in the Northern Gas Board. At the time the Hendon gasworks was the main gas producing station of the Sunderland division of the NGB and included the districts of Durham, Houghton-Le-Spring, Chester-Le-Street, Consett & Stanley. On nationalisation the undertaking vested in the NGB.6,7,8 He married Honor Naggs, daughter of George Naggs and Isabella Watson, in 1912 in Sunderland, Durham, England.9 He married Elsie Florence West in 1931 in Sunderland, Durham, England.10 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register John was listed as living at 24 Woodstock Avenue, Sunderland, Durham, England, with his wife Honor. And their children John and Greta. John was a Clerk Timekeeper in the Gas works and a Special Constable.11 His wife Elsie died on 13 April 1951 in General Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham, England, Her usual address was 24 Woodstock Avenue, Sunderland.12,13 John received administration on 27 June 1951 on his wife's estate. He was a gas works clerk.13 He died on 28 February 1954 in General Hospital, Hexham, Northumberland, England, His usual address was South Tyne Terrace, Wark-on-Tyne, Northumberland.13,14 The will of John was proved on 25 May 1954 to his son John Henry Greathead a male nurse and John George Burrell a gas board clerk in Durham. Joseph was an RAF Officer.3,2 Joseph and Norma were divorced in 1947.2 He married Doreen Filby about 1952 in Hartlepool, Durham, England.2 Joseph died in 1976.2
