     Elizabeth Greathead was born on 9 December 1904 in Albany Terrace, Grangetown, Sunderland, Durham, England.1,2,3 She was the daughter of William Greathead and Elizabeth Mary Parker. In the census of 2 April 1911 in 24 Spelter wks Road, New Hendon, Sunderland, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of Elizabeth Mary Greathead she was at school.4 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Elizabeth Greathead was listed as living at 3 Lashmere Road, Sunderland, Durham, England with her parents She was a paper sorter in a paper mill.5 This grand lady attended a party thrown by her pals to celebrate her 100th birthday. She was the President of the Tunstall View Townswomen's Guild and put her long life down to her hectic social life. The event was marked by an article in the Sunderland Echo.6,7,8 Elizabeth died on 18 July 2011 in Sunderland, Durham, England, aged 106 peacefully in hospital.9,10 Elizabeth was buried on 29 July 2011 in Sunderland Crematorium, Sunderland, Durham, England, following a memorial service at St Aidan's Church, Grangetown on Wednesday 27 July.9

He gave his address as 52 Harvey Road, Yardley, Birmngham. Walter John Greathead
     Walter John Greathead was born on 15 August 1911 in 7 Severn Grove, Lozells Street, Aston Manor, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.1,2,3 He was the son of Daniel Saunders Greathead and Alice Williams. There is a lovely picture of Alice and Daniel and three children. Arthur, Ivy and baby Walter, sadly baby Daniel had died in infancy. Presumably taken around 1912.4 On his scholar's leaving certificate from Lozelle Street School dated 24 July 1925 Walter, after four years he was described as never having been late, with 100% attendance and conduct excellent. He was a school prefect, a very good worker and absolutely trustworthy and reliable.4 The Edinburgh Gazette of 8 June 1928 stated that Walter John Greathead had been appointed a Temporary Postman-Messenger during the month of May 1928.5 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Walter John Greathead was listed as living at 75 Lozells Street, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England with his parents Walter was a postman.6 He married Susan Emily Groom on 18 November 1939 in St Silas, Lozells, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Leonard George Powell and Elizabeth Maud Groom. Walter was listed as a postman, living at 76 Lozells Street, Lozells and Susan a waitress living at 64 Colindale Road, Kingstanding. Her father George had died.7 Walter saw active service in the 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment No. 5258246. He was badly wounded in the Normandy Campaign in August 1944 and spent a long time in hospital. He was lame for the remainder of his life. He was awarded the Imperial Service Medal when he retired after 46 years in the Post Office.4 His wife Susan died on October 1962 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, aged 56 from Cancer. Her daughter Jean nursed her during this illness.8 He married Ruby Wood in 1963 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.1,9 The will of Alice Greathead was proved by Walter John Greathead her son in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, on 11 December 1968 who lived at 12 Meadowside Road, Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield and was a post office employee.10 Walter died on 11 January 1981 in 1 Condover Drive, Sutton Farm, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, aged 69 from a heart attack.1,11,12 Administration papers were issued with a will on 10 March 1981 in Sheffield. His effects were valued at £7,057.12

     Ruby Wale was born on 22 January 1910 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England.1,2,3 She married Frederick Roland Wood in 1937 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England, Frederick and Ruby had three children.1,4 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Ruby was listed as living at 6 Waddington Avenue, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England with her husband Frederick. And their son John. Frederick was a Post Office Engineer.3 Her husband Frederick died in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England, He was employed by GPO Telephones so did not go on ‘active service’.5,6 She married Walter John Greathead, son of Daniel Saunders Greathead and Alice Williams, in 1963 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.1,7 Her husband Walter died on 11 January 1981 in 1 Condover Drive, Sutton Farm, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, aged 69 from a heart attack.1,8,9 Ruby died on 14 January 2004 in 68 Annesley Road, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, aged 93 Ruby had worked in the Post Office for many years.10,11 The will of Ruby was proved on 1 March 2004 in Birmingham to her son John Barry Wood.11

     Susan Emily Groom was born on 19 August 1906 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.2,3,4 On Susan's leaving certificate from Windsor Street school after seven years on 23 July 1920 she was described as having satisfactory attendance, fairly good punctuality, very good conduct. Her head teacher wrote that she deserved praise for her industry application to work, and good progress was made.2 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Susan was listed as living at 64 Colindale Road, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England She was an office waitress living with her mother and siblings.5 She married Walter John Greathead, son of Daniel Saunders Greathead and Alice Williams, on 18 November 1939 in St Silas, Lozells, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Leonard George Powell and Elizabeth Maud Groom. Walter was listed as a postman, living at 76 Lozells Street, Lozells and Susan a waitress living at 64 Colindale Road, Kingstanding. Her father George had died.6 Susan died in October 1962 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, aged 56 from Cancer. Her daughter Jean nursed her during this illness.7

     John Mortimer Makin was born on 11 April 1921 in Stockport, Cheshire, England, John's mothers maiden name was Cattrell.2,3 John served in the RAF during WW2 spending three years in Iraq, then Singapore and finally finnishing the war in Japan.4 He married Gertrude Boardman in 1951 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.4,5 His wife Gertrude died on 1981 in Stafford, Staffordshire, England.4,6 He married Jean Emily Greathead, daughter of Walter John Greathead and Susan Emily Groom, on 21 May 1988 in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, England, after a whirlwind courtship. John proposed to Jean on the night before he set off on a world criuse and they married six weeks after he returned.7,8 John died in September 2005 in Staffordshire, England, aged 84.4,9
