Elizabeth Greathead was born on 9 December 1904 in Albany Terrace, Grangetown, Sunderland, Durham, England.1,2,3 She was the daughter of William Greathead and Elizabeth Mary Parker. In the census of 2 April 1911 in 24 Spelter Works Road, New Hendon, Sunderland, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of Elizabeth Mary Greathead she was at school.4 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 24 Spelter Works Road, Sunderland, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of Elizabeth Mary Greathead Elizabeth was living with five of her children.5 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Elizabeth Greathead was listed as living at 3 Lashmere Road, Sunderland, Durham, England, with her parents She was a paper sorter in a paper mill.6 This grand lady attended a party thrown by her pals to celebrate her 100th birthday. She was the President of the Tunstall View Townswomen's Guild and put her long life down to her hectic social life. The event was marked by an article in the Sunderland Echo.7,8,9
Elizabeth died on 18 July 2011 in Sunderland, Durham, England, aged 106 peacefully in hospital.10,11 Elizabeth was buried on 29 July 2011 in Sunderland Crematorium, Sunderland, Durham, England, following a memorial service at St Aidan's Church, Grangetown on Wednesday 27 July.10

Walter John Greathead was born on 15 August 1911 in 7 Severn Grove, Lozells Street, Aston Manor, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.1,2,3 He was the son of Daniel Saunders Greathead and Alice Williams. There is a lovely picture of Alice and Daniel and three children. Arthur, Ivy and baby Walter, sadly baby Daniel had died in infancy. Presumably taken around 1912.4
On his scholar's leaving certificate from Lozelle Street School dated 24 July 1925 Walter, after four years he was described as never having been late, with 100% attendance and conduct excellent. He was a school prefect, a very good worker and absolutely trustworthy and reliable.4 The Edinburgh Gazette of 8 June 1928 stated that Walter John Greathead had been appointed a Temporary Postman-Messenger during the month of May 1928.5 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Walter John Greathead was listed as living at 75 Lozells Street, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, with his parents Walter was a postman.6 He married Susan Emily Groom on 18 November 1939 in St Silas, Lozells, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Leonard George Powell and Elizabeth Maud Groom. Walter was listed as a postman, living at 76 Lozells Street, Lozells and Susan a waitress living at 64 Colindale Road, Kingstanding. Her father George had died.7
Walter saw active service in the 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment No. 5258246. He was badly wounded in the Normandy Campaign in August 1944 and spent a long time in hospital. He was lame for the remainder of his life. He was awarded the Imperial Service Medal when he retired after 46 years in the Post Office.4
His wife Susan died on October 1962 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, aged 56 from cancer. Her daughter Jean nursed her during the illness.8 He married Ruby Wood in 1963 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.1,9 The will of Alice Greathead was proved by Walter John Greathead her son in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, on 11 December 1968 who lived at 12 Meadowside Road, Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield and was a post office employee.10 Walter died on 11 January 1981 in 1 Condover Drive, Sutton Farm, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, aged 69 from a heart attack.1,11,12 Administration papers were issued with a will on 10 March 1981 in Sheffield. His effects were valued at £7,057.12
