     George Turmaine was born about 1854 in Gravesend, Kent, England.1 He was the son of John Turmaine and Elizabeth Merchant.1 In the census of 7 April 1861 in 5 Somerset Court, Gravesend, Kent, England, he was listed as the son of John Turmaine George was a scholar.2,3 He married Harriet Weller, daughter of Frederick Weller, on 26 March 1876 in St James, Gravesend, Kent, England.4,5 George was listed as the head of the family on the census of 3 April 1881 in 1 Nine Elms Grove, Gravesend, Kent, England, George was living with his wife and working as a painter.      Annie Upston was born about 1868 in England.2 She married Jesse Gilby. Jesse and his wife Annie travelled with their children Anna R aged 19, Beatrice aged 9, Emma aged 10, Ernest G aged 3, Henry aged 18, James aged 5, Mabel E aged 15 and Mary A aged 16. Jesse and Henry were listed as labourers, Mabel and Mary were servants. They travelled aboard the ship Ionian leaving Liverpool on 20 May 1907 bound for Montreal in Canada.2

     Arthur Thomas Stokes was born about 1865.1 He was the son of Henry Stokes.2 He married Isabella Langford, daughter of Richard Langford, on 30 August 1892 in Register Office, Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, after a certificate was issued. The ceremony was witnessed by James Harring and John J Stephens. Arthur had not been married before and worked as a railway goods labourer. Both of them gave their address as 17 Gopsall Street, Duddeston.3
