Jack Leslie C Turmaine
Jack Leslie Charles Turmaine was born on 11 October 1920 in 11 Matthews Place, Bridge Street, Dover, Kent, England.2,3,4 He was the son of Ernest Edward Turmaine and Ethel Eliza Stroud.1 Jack served in the military between 1939 and 1946. He was mobilised as Royal Artillery (Teritorial) in August 1939 and was posted to the Light Anti-aircraft Battery Unit as a mobile RADAR unit operator. He took part in the post "Dunkirque" defence against air raids and was posted to Farthingloe, Dover for the "Battle of Britain". He was called back to Dover to cover "The Channel Dash", his unit located the fighter screen above the German Cruisers inspite of attempts to "Jam" the radar by the enemy. Post "D Day" he took part in "Operation Diver" against V.1s moving around the South East of England, finally out on the Essex Marshes, as the launching sites were pushed East by the advancing Allies. He had been promoted to Sergeant by the time of his marriage.2 He married Eileen Joan Norris, daughter of Frederick Willie Norris and Florence K Pickering, on 8 August 1942 in St Martins, Elms Vale, Dover, Kent, England, Eileen's father gave permission for Eileen to marry Jack if he made Sergeant. Jack married Eileen in his No 1 Uniform (Royal Artillary) complete with white lanyards and three gold sergeant's stripes on his arm.2,5 By 1945 he had been promoted to Sergeant Major at Larkhill while a gunnery instructor and was demobed in 1946 with the rank of Warrant Sergeant (Technical Assistant). He was offered a full time Commission, working on radar development, but pressure from his family made him return to Dover and his pre-war employer.2 Jack was a master baker and confectioner between 1946 and 1963 in Church Gates Bakery, Ash, Nr Canterbury.2 On the occassion of their 50th wedding anniversary the family discovered that Jack and Eileen's special song was "Don't sit under the apple tree with anyone else but me."2 He died on 26 June 1996 in Kent and Canterbury Hospital, Canterbury, Kent, England, aged 75.2,6
