Emily Raggett

     Emily Raggett was born on 16 October 1866 in Bramley, Surrey, England.1,2 She was the daughter of Reuben Raggett and Mary Nash.1 She was baptised on 3 February 1867 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England, her father was a labourer.3 In the census of 2 April 1871 in China Row, Bramley, Guildford, Surrey, England, she was listed as the daughter of Reuben Raggett.4 In the census of 3 April 1881 in Thorncombe Street, Bramley, Surrey, England, she was listed as the daughter of Reuben Raggett.5 She witnessed the marriage of Jane Mitchell and Reuben Raggett on 29 January 1887 in St Mary and All Saints, Dunsfold, Surrey, England.1,6,7 In the census of 5 April 1891 in Ockford Road, Godalming, Surrey, England, Emily was living with her Uncle William Faulkner age 57 a grocer born in Limpsfield, Aunt Harriett age 58 from Thursley and their daughter Eliza M a dressmaker aged 22 from Godalming. Emily was listed as a domestic general servant.8 She married Thomas Mitchell, son of John Mitchell and Emma Turrell, on 1 December 1891 in St Peter and St Paul, Godalming, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by William Faulkner, Eliza Mary Faulkner and Henry James Mitchell. Thomas was a gardener.9,7 Emily was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in Witley, Surrey, England, Emily was living with her three children Annie, Emily and Henry. They had a monthly nurse F Pussman aged 30 and born in West Hartlepool living with them. Edith Hockley aged 14 born Witley was visiting the family. Emily is listed as married but no sign of her husband.10 Her husband Thomas died on 1901 in Witley, Surrey, England.11 Emily was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in Gosden Common, Bramley, Surrey, England, Emily was a charwoman living with her children in their four roomed home.12 Emily was listed as head of household in the census of 19 June 1921 in 6 The Barracks, Shalford, Surrey, England, Emily was living with two of her children and grandson Lawrence. Henry was a cycle fitter for JE Jackson a cycle agent and repairer which was at 1 Portsmouth Road in Guildford.13 Emily was a Member of Wonersh Congregational Church. She was widowed early in life and spent some of her life at Greenways, 8 New Road, Wonersh. In 1938 electoral lists Emily and Annie Ethel Mitchell were listed as living at Greenways, 8 New Road, Wonersh, Surrey, England, Annie, Emily and Alice were all living together.14 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Emily was listed as living at Greenways, 8 New Road, Guildford, Surrey, England, with two of her children Annie and Alice and her incapacitated grandson Lawrence.15 She died on a Sunday.16 She was buried on 30 April 1942 in Blackheath Cemetery, Blackheath, Surrey, England, on the following Thursday her death after a service in St John the Baptist in Wonersh.17

Annie Ethel Mitchell1

     Annie Ethel Mitchell was born on 15 December 1892 in Godalming, Surrey, England.1,2,3 She was the daughter of Thomas Mitchell and Emily Raggett. In the census of 31 March 1901 in Witley, Surrey, England, she was listed as the daughter of Emily Mitchell.4 In the census of 2 April 1911 in Down Place, Compton, Guildford, Surrey, England, she was listed as servant with kitchenmaid domestic duties. She was living with Marion Bett and her daughters in their 28 roomed home. There were six other servants in the household.5 In 1938 electoral lists Annie and Emily Mitchell were listed as living at Greenways, 8 New Road, Wonersh, Surrey, England, Annie, Emily and Alice were all living together.6 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Annie Ethel Mitchell was listed as living at Greenways, 8 New Road, Guildford, Surrey, England, with her mother.7 In 1945 electoral lists Annie was listed as living at Greenways, 8 New Road, Wonersh, Surrey, England.6 Annie died in 1980 in Surrey, England.8 She left her home Greenways, 8 New Road, Wonersh to her great nephew Martin.9

     Alice Mary Mitchell was born on 5 April 1901 in Hambledon, Surrey, England.1,2 She was the daughter of Thomas Mitchell and Emily Raggett. In the census of 2 April 1911 in Gosden Common, Bramley, Surrey, England, she was listed as the daughter of Emily Mitchell.3 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 6 The Barracks, Shalford, Surrey, England, she was listed as the daughter of Emily Mitchell Emily was living with two of her children and grandson Lawrence. Henry Charles Mitchell
     Henry Charles Mitchell was born on 25 October 1899 in Witley, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of Thomas Mitchell and Emily Raggett. In the census of 31 March 1901 in Witley, Surrey, England, he was listed as the son of Emily Mitchell.3 In the census of 2 April 1911 in Gosden Common, Bramley, Surrey, England, he was listed as the son of Emily Mitchell Henry was at school.4 Henry, a cycle fiter appeared before a tribunal on 8 December applying for exemption as a conscientious objector. In his application he stated that he attended the Bramley Mission Room, and could take no part in warfare. He alos objected to non combatant service because to his mind it was all for the same object. With regard to national service he stated he had no objection to taking up other work provided it did not conflict with his conscience. A letter was read from Mr Jackson, his employer stating he was a good workman and a very conscientious and sincere young man. The Chairman of the tribunal granted him exemption from non combatant service only, but stated he would go into the army anyway. Henry said 2 he most certainly would not" It is understood from the family he spent time in jail for his beliefs.5 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 6 The Barracks, Shalford, Surrey, England, he was listed as the son of Emily Mitchell Emily was living with two of her children and grandson Lawrence. Henry was a cycle fitter for JE Jackson a cycle agent and repairer which was at 1 Portsmouth Road in Guildford.6 He married Jessie Edith Noyes in 1928 in Hambledon, Surrey, England.7 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Henry was listed as living at Southbourne, Dorking Road, Chilworth, Surrey, England, with his wife Jessie. With their son Kenneth and a boy called Peter Lambird.8 He was working in a bicycle shop in Guildford that he owned.9 Henry died on 25 March 1972 in Surrey, England, aged 72.10

Kenneth Mitchell
     Kenneth Mitchell was born on 31 March 1932 in Hambledon, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Henry Charles Mitchell and Jessie Edith Noyes. On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Kenneth Mitchell was listed as living at Southbourne, Dorking Road, Chilworth, Surrey, England, with his parents.2 Jess and her son Ken went ona visit in August 1972 to Northallerton, Yorkshire for a few days and sent a post card to her bridsemaids parents who were living in Goseden Cottages, Gosden Common Bramley in Surrey.3 Kenneth died on 27 January 2016 in Pilgrim Homes, Framland, Nalder Town, Wantage, Oxfordshire, England, aged 83.4

     Harry Wise was born on 19 October 1901.1,2 He married Alice Mary Mitchell, daughter of Thomas Mitchell and Emily Raggett, in 1939 in Surrey, England.3 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Harry was listed as living at 18 Lawnsmead Cottages, Wonersh, Surrey, England, with Ernest and Harriet Pullen and one other. Harry was a general labourer.4 His wife Alice died on 23 March 1972 in Surrey, England, aged 70.5 Harry died in 1980 in Surrey, England.6

     Ann Verrill was born on 23 April 1742.1 She was the daughter of John Verrill and Margaret Trufitt. She was baptised on 23 April 1742.1 She married Isaac Mason on 23 December 1770 in Hinderwell, Yorkshire, England, Banns 2 , 9 and 16 Dec 1770 witnessed by John and Thomas Verrill.2

     Thomas Verrill was born on 14 August 1748.1 He was the son of John Verrill and Margaret Trufitt. Thomas was on 14 August 1748 received into church having been baptised privately before Mr Thompson, late Curate of Hinderwell.2 He married Sarah Burton on 1 December 1771 in Hinderwell, Yorkshire, England, after a licence was issued. The ceremony was witnessed by Robert Robinson and Matthew Brown.2 He was a fisherman and Master of Walmer Castle. Thomas was buried on 3 June 1825.
