Reuben Raggett1

     Reuben Raggett was born in 1861 in Cranleigh, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of Reuben Raggett and Mary Nash.1 He was baptised on 2 March 1862 in St Nicholas, Cranleigh, Surrey, England, his family lived in the Lodge in Cranleigh and his father was a labourer.3,4 In the census of 2 April 1871 in China Row, Bramley, Guildford, Surrey, England, he was listed as the son of Reuben Raggett Reuben was a scholar.5 In the census of 3 April 1881 in Thorncombe Street, Bramley, Surrey, England, he was listed as the son of Reuben Raggett Reuben was a farm labourer.6 He married Jane Mitchell, daughter of John Mitchell and Emma Turrell, on 29 January 1887 in St Mary and All Saints, Dunsfold, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Thomas Mitchell and Emily Raggett. Jane's father was a farm bailiff.1,7,8 Reuben was listed as the head of the family on the census of 5 April 1891 in Birtley Road, Bramley, Surrey, England, Reuben was working as a bricklayers labourer.9 Reuben was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in Yieldhurst, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, Reuben was a baker.10 His wife Jane died on 1906 in Yieldhurst, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.11 He married Ellen Worsfold in 1908 in Dorking, Surrey, England.12 Reuben was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in Yieldhurst, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, Reuben was a journeyman baker living with his wife and two small children in their five roomed home.13 Reuben died on 30 March 1930 in Royal Surrey Hospital, Guildford, Surrey, England, his usual address was Yieldhurst, Shamley Green.14,15 The will of Reuben was proved on 28 May 1930 in London to his widow Ellen. His effects were valued at £186 7s 2d.15

     Rosina Raggett was born in 1864 in Bramley, Surrey, England.1,2 She was the daughter of Reuben Raggett and Mary Nash.1 She was baptised on 5 June 1864 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England, the family lived in Bramley and her father was a labourer.3 In the census of 2 April 1871 in China Row, Bramley, Guildford, Surrey, England, she was listed as the daughter of Reuben Raggett.4 In the census of 3 April 1881 in Summerpool House, Bramley, Surrey, England, she was listed as the servant for Edward Eager, an estate agent and his family. One of three domestic servants.5 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 39 Gloucester Place, Paddington, London, England, she was listed as the servant and housemaid to Charles H Howel an architect and surveyor. The household also consisted of Charles sister in law who was born in Godalming and thus possibly knew Rosina.6 She married George Theobald on 31 October 1891 in St Stephen, Canonbury Road, Islington, London, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by George Jolley and Elizabeth Jane Oakden. Rosina gave the address where she was a housemaid in Paddington and George lived in Stonefield Street, he worked as a warehouseman.7 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 43 Park Grove, West Ham, London, England, she was listed as the wife of George Theobald.8 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 43 Park Grove, West Ham, London, England, she was listed as the wife of George Theobald.9 Rosina died on 22 January 1936 in 43 Park Grove, West Ham, London, England.1,10 Administration papers were issued with a will on 17 April 1936 in London to her husband a retired furniture porter. Her effects were valued at £66 1s0d.10

     Wilson Greathead was born on 29 June 1857 in 1 Dame Street, Islington, London, England.2 He was the son of James Greathead and Sarah Field. James, Sarah and baby Wilson were nominated for assisted passage under the new government assisted emigrated scheme, probably planning to sail with Thomas and Martha. The family were living at the time in Holborn, but I believe they must have gone out between after March 1859 when baby Milner was born and before October 1860 when Wilson appears to have been baptised in South Africa.3 He was baptised on 14 October 1860 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, King Williams Town, Eastern Cape, South Africa, His sponsors were Michael and Margaret Durney and the priest Father O'Neil.4 He married Emily Monica Crowe, daughter of John Crowe and Anne Whittington, on 2 July 1883 in Holy Trinity, Debe Nek, King Williams Town, Eastern Cape, South Africa, Wilson was a surveyor.1,5 His wife Emily died on 24 September 1940 in Kloof Nek Rd, Cape Town, South Africa, aged 80.1,3 Wilson died on 26 May 1941 in Cape Town, South Africa, aged 83.3,1 Wilson was buried in Maitland Cemetery, Cape Town, South Africa, Wilson and Emily were buried under the same gravestone.6
