     William Verrill was born about 1829 in Staithes, Yorkshire, England.1 He was baptized on 12 January 1829. He was the son of Nelson Verrill and Martha Snowden. He married Mary Ann Harrison, daughter of John Harrison, on 5 November 1854 in Hinderwell, Yorkshire, England.2 William was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 3 April 1881 in 29 Oldham Street, Skelton in Gainsborough, York, Yorkshire, England, William was deaf and remained at home, there were two young boarders who were also ironstone miners. Thomas Park aged nineteen and Mark Lightfoot aged twelve.3
