In the census of 5 April 1891 in Hedley Cottages, Kyo, Lanchester, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Thomas Greathead.7 In the census of 31 March 1901 in Headley Cottages, South Moor, Oxhill, Lanchester, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Thomas Greathead.8 He married Jane Isobel Dawson, daughter of George Dawson, on 19 January 1909 in Lanchester, Durham, England, Isabel was the first wife of Mathew and was sometimes called Lizzie.3,9,10 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 10 Malden Terrace, Anfield Plain, Lanchester, Durham, England, he was listed as a boarder Matthew was a coalminer putter. Matthew, his wife and young son were boarding with John and Henrietta Hall and their family in their three roomed home.11 His wife Jane died on 1914 in Lanchester, Durham, England.12 He married Ethel Young, daughter of Joseph Young, on 3 February 1915 in Lanchester, Durham, England, Matthew was believed to be living with the Dr to whom Ethel was a chef.13,1,3 Matthew gave his address on the absent voters list as 3 Wesley Cottages in Chester-le-Street Division.14 Matthew served with the Durham Home Guard, 6th Battalion in WW2.6 Matthew died in 1965 in Durham, England.15

She married Matthew Anderson Greathead, son of William Thomas Greathead and Mary Isabella Anderson, on 3 February 1915 in Lanchester, Durham, England, Matthew was believed to be living with the Dr to whom Ethel was a chef.5,1,2 Her husband Matthew died on 1965 in Durham, England.6 Ethel died in 1972 in Durham, England.7

     Robert Hamilton Greathead was born on 22 May 1920 in Lanchester, Durham, England.3 He was the son of Matthew Anderson Greathead and Ethel Young. Robert applied to join the Durham Home Guard on 19 December 1940 serving in 6th Battalion in WW2. He gave his address as living with his parents in 77 Fourth Street, South Moor. He was discharged on 8 November 1946.4 He married Florence Edith Gill in 1944 in Durham, England.5,1,6 His wife Florence died on 1963 in Blackpool, Lancashire, England.7 Following the death of his wife their daughters Carole and Linda went to live with their step sister 'Millie' Florence for a while. He worked as deputy overman at the Morrison Busty Colliery until 1964 when he moved to Rainworth and met Mahala and they set up home.8 He lived with Mahala Hall in 1964 in England.8 In October 1965 he went to work for Rexo the cokeworks.8 Robert, Mahala, Linda Carole and Paul moved back up North to Dipton in 1965 where Robert went inro the publican business, then later in Shotton.8 His partner Mahala died on 1968 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham, England.9 Following Mohala's death Robert and his children moved again and he worked in the Easington Colliery until ill health forced him to retire.8 He married Jane Cowie on 2 August 1978 in Durham, England.10,11 Robert died in November 1982 in Durham, England, aged 62 is daughter Carole tells about her fathers love of dancing, saying he was so good at it, men used to ask him to dance with them.12,6,8

She was a ballroom dancer and chef.1 She married George Mannon Reay, son of Thomas Reay and Elizabeth Mennom, in 1946 in Durham, England, Ethel was George's second wife.3,1 Ethel was the favourite child of Matthew. She won lots of cups for dancing up until 1951. It is understood she had an affair with the Italian dance instructor.1 Ethel died in 1979 in Durham, England.1,4

She was registered in the GRO indexes in 1913 in pen with a reference to an entry in 1919. I believe she was born in 1913 and the register caught up later.1,2 She married Edward Gill in 1931 in Lanchester, Durham, England.3 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Florence was listed as living at 9 Bloemfontein Terrace, Stanley, Durham, England and her daughter Florence.4 Her husband Edward died on 23 May 1940 Private Edward Gill 4455285, 8th Battallion Durham Light Infantry is remembered with honour on column 122 of the Dunkirk Memorial. His wife Florence Edith was living in South Stanley, Durham at the time.5 She married Robert Hamilton Greathead, son of Matthew Anderson Greathead and Ethel Young, in 1944 in Durham, England.6,7,8 Florence died in 1963 in Blackpool, Lancashire, England.9

     John Makepeace Walton was born in 1876 in Hexham, Durham, England.1 He married Ellen Robinson in 1896 in Lanchester, Durham, England.2 His wife Ellen died on 1897 in Lanchester, Durham, England.3 He married Caroline Amelia E Bell in 1898 in Lanchester, Durham, England.4 John was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in 85 Benfieldside Road, Benfieldside, Durham, England, John was a miner living with his wife.5 His wife Caroline died on 1907 in Lanchester, Durham, England.6 He married Mary Ann Greathead, daughter of William Thomas Greathead and Mary Isabella Anderson, in 1908 in St George, Southmoor, Durham, England.7,8 John was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 4 Ann Street, Stanley, Durham, England, John was a coal miner's stoneman living with his wife and children and someone who is listed as his stepson John Smith aged 6 born in Hamilton in Scotland.9 John enlisted on 31 July 1914 when he was living at 6 Melton Terrace on Anfield Plain in Durham. He was 35 years and 9 months old and worked as a miner. He was attested as Private 397317 on 21 November that year into Northern Fusaliers 25th Battalion. He served in France from 11 January 1916 until 30 June 1918 returning home on 1 July 1918. He had been wounded in his hand on 13 June 1918. He went into the General Military Hospital in Edmonton on 30 July 1918.8 John died in 1930 in Lanchester, Durham, England, he was a council employee.10,11 John was buried on 14 July 1930 in Blackhill Cemetery, Consett, Durham, England, in section 3 grave 180.11

     Mary Elizabeth Farren was born on 11 March 1875.1 She was the daughter of Robert Ferren. She married William John Gerrens in 1897 in Whitehaven, Lancashire, England.2 Her husband William died on 1914 in Lanchester, Durham, England.3 She married George Lumley Greathead, son of Mark Greathead and Elizabeth Lumley, on 10 August 1918 in The Register Office, Manchester, Lancashire, England, This was the second marriage for both of them. The ceremony was witnessed by William Wilkinson and Walter Beavis. George signed with an X on the certificate.4 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Mary was listed as living at 55 Lily Gardens, Stanley, Durham, England with her husband George. And Mary's son John, who was incapacitated. George was a colliery hewer.1 Mary died in 1943 in Durham, England.5
