In the census of 5 April 1891 in Hedley Cottages, Kyo, Lanchester, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Thomas Greathead.7 In the census of 31 March 1901 in Headley Cottages, South Moor, Oxhill, Lanchester, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Thomas Greathead.8 He married Jane Isobel Dawson, daughter of George Dawson, on 19 January 1909 in Lanchester, Durham, England, Isabel was the first wife of Mathew and was sometimes called Lizzie.3,9,10 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 10 Malden Terrace, Anfield Plain, Lanchester, Durham, England, he was listed as a boarder Matthew was a coalminer putter. Robert Hamilton Greathead was born on 22 May 1920 in Lanchester, Durham, England.3 He was the son of Matthew Anderson Greathead and Ethel Young. In the census of 19 June 1921 in Wesley Cottages, Anfield Plane, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Matthew Anderson Greathead.4 Robert applied to join the Durham Home Guard on 19 December 1940 serving in 6th Battalion in WW2. He gave his address as living with his parents in 77 Fourth Street, South Moor. He was discharged on 8 November 1946.5 He married Florence Edith Gill in 1944 in Durham, England.6,1,7 His wife Florence died on 1963 in Blackpool, Lancashire, England.8 Following the death of his wife their daughters Carole and Linda went to live with their step sister 'Millie' Florence for a while. He worked as deputy overman at the Morrison Busty Colliery until 1964 when he moved to Rainworth and met Mahala and they set up home.9 He lived with Mahala Hall in 1964 in England.9 In October 1965 he went to work for Rexo the cokeworks.9 Robert, Mahala, Linda Carole and Paul moved back up North to Dipton in 1965 where Robert went inro the publican business, then later in Shotton.9 His partner Mahala died on 1968 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham, England.10 Following Mohala's death Robert and his children moved again and he worked in the Easington Colliery until ill health forced him to retire.9 He married Jane Cowie on 2 August 1978 in Durham, England.11,12 Robert died in November 1982 in Durham, England, aged 62 is daughter Carole tells about her fathers love of dancing, saying he was so good at it, men used to ask him to dance with them.13,7,9

I believe she was born in 1913 and the register caught up later.1,2 She married Edward Gill in 1931 in Lanchester, Durham, England.3 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Florence was listed as living at 9 Bloemfontein Terrace, Stanley, Durham, England, and her daughter Florence.4 Her husband Edward died on 23 May 1940 Private Edward Gill 4455285, 8th Battallion Durham Light Infantry is remembered with honour on column 122 of the Dunkirk Memorial. His wife Florence Edith was living in South Stanley, Durham at the time.5 She married Robert Hamilton Greathead, son of Matthew Anderson Greathead and Ethel Young, in 1944 in Durham, England.6,7,8 Florence died in 1963 in Blackpool, Lancashire, England.9
