In the census of 5 April 1891 in Hedley Cottages, Kyo, Lanchester, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Thomas Greathead.6 In the census of 31 March 1901 in Headley Cottages, South Moor, Oxhill, Lanchester, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Thomas Greathead.7 He married Jane Isobel Dawson, daughter of George Dawson, on 19 January 1909 in Lanchester, Durham, England, Isabel was the first wife of Mathew and was sometimes called Lizzie.3,8,9 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 10 Malden Terrace, Anfield Plain, Lanchester, Durham, England, he was listed as a boarder Matthew was a coalminer putter. Matthew, his wife and young son were boarding with John and Henrietta Hall and their family in their three roomed home.10 His wife Jane died on 1914 in Lanchester, Durham, England.11 He married Ethel Young, daughter of Joseph Young, on 3 February 1915 in Lanchester, Durham, England, Matthew was believed to be living with the Dr to whom Ethel was a chef.12,1,3 He died in 1965 in Durham, England.13

She was a ballroom dancer and chef.1 She married George Mannon Reay, son of Thomas Reay, in 1946 in Durham, England, Ethel was George's second wife.3,1 Ethel was the favourite child of Matthew. She won lots of cups for dancing up until 1951. It is understood she had an affair with the Italian dance instructor.1 She died in 1979.1

I believe she was born in 1913 and the register caught up later.1 She married Edward Gill in 1931 in Lanchester, Durham, England.2 Her husband Edward died on 23 May 1940 Private Edward Gill 4455285, 8th Battallion Durham Light Infantry is remembered with honour on column 122 of the Dunkirk Memorial. His wife Florence Edith was living in South Staley, Durham at the time.3 She married Robert Hamilton Greathead, son of Matthew Anderson Greathead and Ethel Young, in 1944 in Durham, England.4,5,6 She died in 1963 in Blackpool, Lancashire, England.7

The ceremony was witnessed by William Wilkinson and Walter Beavis. George signed with an X on the certificate.1 She died in 1943 in Durham, England.2
