     William Banthorpe was born in 1895 in Norwich, Norfolk, England.1,2,3 He was the son of James Banthorpe and Kate Palmer. In the census of 31 March 1901 in 48 Silver Street, Norwich, Norfolk, England, he was listed as the son of James Banthorpe.4 William enlisted on 10 May 1912 for a term of four years, he continued his service when war broke out. He gave his occupation as a labourer and address as 12 Whalebone Square, Catton, Norwich.3 His Lance Corporal stripe was removed in 1915 through negligence. On 27 April 1917 he was attached to 3237 Field Ambulance and later in July 1917 he was posted to Ripon Training in Blackpool, His next of kin was described as his wife who was living in 1917 at 14 Oak Street, Norwich. he served overseas between 24 July 1918 and 28 March 1919

Private Willam Banthorpe No 475416 was discharged on 26 April 1919 as physically unfit. He had been complaining of pain in the left side of his chest, weakness ad palpitations, also of varicose veins.3 He married Alice Maud Sadd in 1915 in Norwich, Norfolk, England.1,5
