Norman Greathead was born on 17 May 1925 in Stockton on Tees, Durham, England.1,2,3 He was the son of William Constantine Greathead and Edith Olive Ovendon. He was in the Navy. He married Elsie Crane, daughter of John James Crane and Sarah Elizabeth Scottow, on 21 September 1946 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England, Elsie's brother Joe who had been a POW for five years in Japan came to their wedding and met his second wife Norman's sister Grace.1,4
His wife Elsie died on 8 January 1999 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England, aged 73.1,5 Norman suffered from arthritis late in life.1 Norman died on 7 January 2009 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England, aged 83.6,7,8 The will of Norman was proved on 17 June 2009 in Leeds.7

In the census of 5 April 1891 in 37 Florence Street, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Greathead.5 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 28 Browns Row, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Greathead.6 He married Edith Olive Ovendon, daughter of George Ovendon and ... ..., on 9 October 1909 in St James, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England.1,7,8 William was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 29 Ryan Street, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, William was a general steel plate worker living with his wife and small son in their four roomed home.9 William enrolled on 1 January 1915 into the Royal Navy. He was 5 foot 3½ inches tall. His chest was 35 inches, his eyes blue and complexion fair. He hada scar on his left forearm two indistinct tattoo marks. His addtress was 8 Mill Street East, Stockton. He then sailed abck on the Victory until 21 December 1916 when he was invalided out to Haslar Hospital with chronic Dyspepsion Deficiency of Teeth which was aggrevated by service. He was awarded 1914-15 Star, British War medal and victory medal.10 William was listed as head of household in the census of 19 June 1921 in 52 Hill Street, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, William was an engineman at the South Durham steelworks living with his wife and children.11 William died in 1940 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England.1,12,3 William was buried on 28 September 1940 in Durham Road Cemetery, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England.1,13

Jane Ann Craggs was born on 3 October 1917. On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Jane was listed as living at 1 Berry Avenue, Sedgefield, Durham, England, in the Craggs household, she was a bus conductress.2 She married Anthony Greathead, son of Anthony Greathead and Elizabeth Grainger, in 1940 in St Albans Church, Trimdon Grange, Sedgefield, Durham, England, Met at the local colliery welfare dance. At the first date they decided they would meet each other for six months, a trial period you might say. After the six months they would decide to continue or finish. They continued for a further 18 months, then they married.3,4
