Evelyn Maude Greathead was born on 25 August 1908 in Wairarapa, New Zealand.2,3,4,5,6 She was the daughter of Leonard Bright Greathead and Annie Haigh. Evelyn was unfortunate in being in an accident when she was two years old. She later wrote about it and entitled it as I've had a Miracle. She wrote:
At the southern end of the North Island of New Zealand and across the Rimutaka Hill from the capital city and port of Wellington lie the Wairarapa Plains. They are accessible only by crossing the Rimutaka Hill, which is very steep and rugged. Rivers flow down from the Tararua Ranges, and between these rivers there are settlements. Featherston first, then a river and 10 miles on, Greytown; another river, and 5 miles farther, Carterton; then another river, and 10 miles farther, Masterton. As each settlement was developed in the mid-1800s, schools and churches were established, and the area was divided into town sections and 40-acre farm sections. My father was born in Carterton and my mother was born in Greytown. When they married, they lived first in Featherston, then moved back to Greytown where they took over one of the 40-acre farms, which belonged to my father's mother. When I was two and a half years old, my uncle came to cut our field of oats. My mother was in the house with my new baby sister, just 10 days old. My father took my brother, who was nearly four, and me with him when he went to get things ready for the cutting. Before the reaper and binder started, my father sent my brother and me home. We got as far as the fence, and my brother stopped to play with some tools. I turned around and started back through the oat field to find Daddy. No one saw me, for the oats were above my head. Suddenly the big horses tramped past me, and the reper knocked me down. I screamed, and my uncle stopped the horses instantly. He leaped down, and my father came running. I was right in the track of the reaper, and my left leg was cut through the bone with only a little flesh and muscle left. The right leg was cut halfway through the bone. My father picked me up and carried me to the house. I struggled to get down because I wanted to walk. It took a while to get our family doctor, and when Dr. Mac came, he dressed my legs and said, "If Evelyn is all right in the morning, we'll take her to Wellington Hospital. It will be three days before we know whether she will survive the shock."I was left in a cot near Mum until morning. My parents were Christians; Mum felt God's peace in, her heart and knew that I would be all right. Early the next morning Dr. Mac and his driver mechanic Dad and I left on the 50-mile trip to the hospital. Cars in those days were new, the roads were rough, the hill was winding and very steep, so it took us all day to reach the hospital. They had to stop several time to attend to me. All the doctors at the hospital gathered to see the little girl who had her legs nearly severed. They all said, "The legs will have to be taken off." Dr. Mac said to Dr Faulke. "Can't something be done?" He said, "One will have to come off, but we will see what can be done with the other."By this time the wounds had turned septic. Dr. Faulke got busy and God guided his hands. He set tubes in the wounds to drain the poisons. (There were no antibiotics and no X rays in those days). The bones were joined with the best skill they had. For a few nights whiffs of chloroform were given me to keep me quiet. On Sunday morning, the people in the six churches of several denominations prayed especially for me. The hospital requested Mum and Dad not to visit me while I was there because I was making such good progress they didn't want me to get upset. Nurses, patients, and relatives all wrote letters to them, giving them news of me. As soon as I was able, they moved me into the women's ward and all the patients too'' turns comforting and entertaining me. In three months Dad was told to come and get me. For a while they feared I would never walk again, but one day at my grandmother's house, I eased myself up against the back of an armchair and stood. Gradually I began to walk. A few days later I collided with my brother, sat down hard, and screamed. I couldn't stand up again. Dr. Mac examined my legs, hips, and back but he said he could find no trouble. Later as he sat beside me, while my mother was dressing the wounds, the doctor said, "Ah—what's that?" He poked out a small piece of bone. Within 10 days, seven pieces of bone worked loose from the wounds. From that time my legs strengthened and I started to walk again. Within a year I was healed and no longer needed the doctor's care. My childhood days were spent like any other child, with hardly a limp to show there was any damage done to my legs. As a teenager and later I did a lot of cycling and walking, sometimes as much as five or six miles. I married a carpenter who later turned to farming, and I worked long hours, standing on my feet nearly all day. Once in my late forties I fell and fractured my leg, but they set it and in five months I was able to get about again. Even today, in my late sixties, I am amazed at what I am able to do. God has been good to me all through the years. I want to give Him all the praise and glory. And the greatest miracle of all, even greater than the healing of my legs, was when God forgave my sins, cleansed my heart, and filled me with His Spirit.4,7
Evelyn lived as a girl in a house in Greytown called Te Rakau Nui.4
She married Oliver John Bartle, son of Thomas Bartle and Sarah Louise Hobbs, on 1 February 1936 in Mt Albert Methodist Church, Auckland, New Zealand.2,3,8 Evelyn, Oliver, Owen, Earle, Jeanne, Estelle, Rita and Beatrice attended the funeral of Mervyn John Greathead on 17 May 1987.9 Evelyn died on 28 July 1988 in Greenlane Hospital, Mount Roskill, Auckland, New Zealand, aged 79 Her usual address was Gracedale Homes, 20 Radmor Road, Auckland. She died from cerebrovascular accidents, Ischaemic heart disease and Chronic Pyelonephritis.10,11 Evelyn was buried on 30 July 1988 in Mangere Lawn Cemetery, Auckland, New Zealand.11
